1. I Am Not a Number Posted: May 15, 2009 at 12:37 PM (#3180125)An essay on Ortiz's woes is understandable. Describing what he was wearing... c'mon, who cares?

It is an outrage that somebody in such a slump would wear Fancy Pants!
He should be ashamed of himself, and I demand he dress like a hobo until he starts hitting again!
Yovani Gallardo has a higher SLG and more Home Runs than Brett Gardner.
Ortiz is going to turn it around evantually. But his days as an elite hitter appear to be numbered.
I believe we're in the negative numbers for that.
Does this turn of phrase insinuate the injections have stopped?
Felix Pie has a higher SLG and more Home Runs than David Ortiz, though he's got nothing on Yovani Gallardo.
That may be the saddest thing I've ever read here.
Not unless you killed the thread...:)
I was trying to be funny there, I wasn't trying to be a dick.
Russ Ortiz has the same number of home runs as David Ortiz.
Please don't give the AJC any ideas on their season's theme for the continuing praise of Jeffie series ("Francoeur outhits legendary Boston slugger")
OTOH A-Rod is about 1 for 30 after that initial home run in Baltimore, so I'd better not get too schadenfreudy about all this.
We could get into an argument about WPA, you buffoon, but my time is limited today. I'm closing on a condo this afternoon.
Well, if I have a man on third and less than two outs in a tie ballgame in the bottom of the ninth, I guess there is still no man more "clutch" than David Ortiz.
Ortiz, Rod Barajas, or Jason Kendall- you can't go wrong.
Don't feel like you have to apologize to GGC. He's a dick and everyone knows it.
And you have to be at the gym in 26 minutes.
He might not be the most fit guy, but he's still recovering from surgery. Yeah, I'll keep telling myself that.
#### you buddy.
Yeah, but this is supposed to be a smarter version of the internet.
He's not your buddy, guy.
a) Ortiz retires with 550+ career home runs
b) Milledge retires with 450+ career home runs
I'm not your guy, pal.
Who you callin pal, fella?
I'm not your fella, friend.
I'm not your fiend, mate.
I'm not your mate, dude.
i'm not your friend, punchy.
<guess the movie reference>
The extreme always seems to make more of an impression.
I'm really worried. For the time being I will believe he's trying to come back too quickly but he's had a while. And it doesn't seem to be getting better.
That is the greatest thing I've ever heard.
***sniff***
just feeling a little fragile today. it's been a long week.
Is that better?
I'm not your friend, Palooka.
Excuse me?
I think you heard me just fine, punchy.
And scene...
Feel my skills, donkey donkey donkey, donkey donkey!
And since April 20th, Ortiz is hitting .250/.379/.395. That's...still pretty bad. But he hasn't been an out machine lately, which is a step up for him.
Edit: Dammit. Must learn what month it is.
His popups started last year (17%, 16% this year, 7-8% the previous 5 years). His LD% is about the same (18% this year, 19% the previous 6 years). Whereas in his Minnesota years, his LD% was 27%.
His GB/FB pct is way down (.33) after being pretty consistent (.48 to .61) during his Boston years.
I disagree:
His popups started last year (17%, 16% this year, 7-8% the previous 5 years).
1) If you think of the five years 2003-2007 as his peak, then consider how similar how similar his 2002 and 2008 are - the seven stretch is almost symmetrical...it wouldn't surprise me if he ends up with a 2009 that looks a lot like his 2001 (maybe a little less SLG, a little more OBP). To paraphrase Rick Pitino, "30-year-old David Ortiz is not walking through that door, folks!"
2) Forget the whole steroid thing - should we really be that surprised that a lumbering, career-DH, slow power guy is pulling up at about age 33? Look at George Scott at age 34. Or Willie Horton at 34. Or Greg Luzinski at age 33. Boog Powell at age 34. Ted Kluszewski at about 32. And so forth. When guys like this lose it, it goes fast (I'll see you at the Mo Vaughn HOF induction ceremony!).
I checked a few likely suspects (e.g., Pujols, Bonds, Manny) but so far the only close to him is Helton (26%).
I'm not sure it's quite what you have in mind but at the bottom of each player's ratio stats are his career numbers then the league average (which I assume is over the life of his career). The Hardball Times allows you to sort by different categories including LD% within a given season. Not sure how far back it goes.
Now, is br's data from retrosheet and THT's from baseball info solutions? Hmm. I wonder how similar they are...
Don't worry about it. By this time next year, it's entirely possible that they won't.
Which sunbelt city is getting the team? Birmingham? Tucson?
With the likely financial situation of the NHL, I was thinking more of a straight contraction issue - the Islanders, Coyotes, Predators, Panthers, and a couple others are all burning through cash at a fairly stunning rate. There just aren't enough people willing to fund losses like that, and enough markets to catch the teams if they have to move.
Also, of the "major" sports in the US, Hockey is the most driven by ticket revenue, and that's likely to take an incredibly savage beating over the next year.
Theo: if no one wants our LOOGY for his cheap price, it means he's no damn good. Make a note of this and stick it in your lunchbox to bring to work on Monday.
I disagree:
His popups started last year (17%, 16% this year, 7-8% the previous 5 years).
We've already dubbed him "Big Popup" in Game Chatter.
They could ship a team or two to Canada, I hear they are somewhat interested in hockey up there.
KC has a state of the art basketball/hockey stadium that comes with a sweetheart deal. The article I read about the stadium mentioned the Islanders. Wang(sp?) had supposedly checked out the city.

[EDIT] Link to Atlantic article.[EDIT]
Yeah, but even up here, we've only got a couple markets who could reasonably support another team, and one of those is being blocked by the Leafs and the Sabres. Apart from that, Winnipeg might (and that's a questionable "might"), and there's a very mild possibility that Quebec City could.
Really, Hamilton is the only one with a serious chance, and that's largely because an insanely rich individual seems willing to sink a whole pile of cash into the attempt. You're not going to find the same level of interest in doing that for Winnipeg or Quebec.
finally, someone to take the name from tino martinez.
For at least one season in the '90s, LR had two minor league hockey teams. That was ... odd. (I don't think there's even one now.)
He's not your Otis Spann either.
(late to the party, I know)
Well, it's certainly more dignified than "Big Crapi."
Or, more plausible still, says that his wrist isn't healed and he needs to go on the 60 day DL.
The Red Sox would do much better to replace him with, well, almost anyone. Chris Carter. Lars Anderson may be some time away from being ready to hit in the majors. Jeff Bailey. Trade. Bring in Frank Thomas at a bargain price, if he'd sign.
Something has to happen to fix this.
I'll take this opportunity for a hockey hijack and say that Gary Bettman is worthless human being who deserves to suffer in the depths of hell.
How quickly you youngsters forget Stan Papi.
