Boston Red Sox designated hitter addresses concerns about team’s clubhouse - ESPN Boston

On the record vs. off the record? Who has more credibility?

“If he wants to make a comment like that, why don’t you ask me a question first,” Ortiz said. “I run this (expletive) clubhouse right here. This clubhouse has no problem. The last problem this clubhouse had was last year when everything came down to what it was in (September), but since then everybody’s cool and everybody’s trying their best to win games.”

The headline made me think Red Sox Designated Hitter had opted out of some MLBPA merchandising deal, like Giants Left Fielder used to do.
   2. Swedish Chef Posted: June 20, 2012 at 10:54 AM (#4161909)
And why did they write out "Boston Red Sox designated hitter" in full? It could be "Red Sox DH" or even "Sox DH" without any loss of understanding. Not to mention that Ortiz is well-known enough to not need attribution, never mind in local news.

I see now that they have changed the headline to "David Ortiz defends clubhouse", which is a squintillion times better.

I also appreciate Ortiz predicting that the Sox will go into beast mode. Maybe the clubhouse is toxic because it currently lacks Skittles.

Giants Left Fielder was great, but nobody matches the legend of QB Eagles.

There used to be the notion of 25 cabs for 25 players with the Red Sox back in the '70s and '80s, but Ortiz says that's not the case -- at least since he's been here.

I dunno, I saw at least 50 Vulture Cabs circling the block around Fenway the last time I was there.

I think they are making implications about his credibility, being only a part time ballplayer.

Yeah, he's designated to hit, not to run this (expletive) clubhouse right here.

I agree but noticed that they always use the abbreviation "ESPN" and not the full name, then it occurred to me that I didn't know what ESPN stood for and found it was the reporting name for East Penn Railroad which also operates industrial park trackage in Bristol. I'm glad to see railroads are diversifying.

And a DH is not a true ballplayer.

"David Ortiz defends clubhouse"

A very angry David Ortiz standing in the clubhouse doorway, swinging his mighty bat, screaming out his battle rage, mounds of dead journalists piled at his feet.
   10. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 20, 2012 at 02:04 PM (#4162072)
Even if this was the most toxic clubhouse in history, it would be pretty much obligatory to deny it on the record. However, unless Olney, or someone else, provides details, the story is probably over. Can't see any player going behind Ortiz's back to spill the beans (if there were any).

I can't imagine how there could be any issues in there!

Papi = Gandalf? Can't see it - not much resemblance to a white-haired skinny wiz. CHB = Balrog? That's more like it.

History's greatest hero.

Papi = Gandalf?

Watership Down is closer although I can't remember any of the rabbits' names.

I remember Hazel, Fiver, and Bigwig. Oh, and Woundwort was the bad guy. Being rabbits, I expect there were about a million more characters than that, though.

Hmm, now I am going to have to read that again.

What a horse's ass.

Really? I love the comment. Makes it sound like he is sticking up for all the players and any ####### reporter that wants to stir #### up needs to go through Ortiz.
   18. Fernigal McGunnigle has become a merry hat Posted: June 20, 2012 at 05:47 PM (#4162232)
Bigwig was the rabbit who sat at the entrance to the burrow and slew all those who opposed him. Until General Woundwort himself came in to have a battle. They fought to a near standstill, and then Dandelion and Blackberry showed up with the dog that scattered the Efrafans, except Woundwort who tried to fight it and was torn to pieces. (I remember this because I saw a fun stage version of it last year.)

I can see Papi as Bigwig, and it's funny to imagine Pedroia as the littlest rabbit, Fiver.

EDIT:

What a horse's ass.

Really? I love the comment. Makes it sound like he is sticking up for all the players and any ####### reporter that wants to stir #### up needs to go through Ortiz.

I love the comment too. He's taking any alleged clubhouse problems on his own back while simultaneously telling the reporter to STFU.
   19. Koot Posted: June 20, 2012 at 06:35 PM (#4162256)
Yea, I like that Papi seems to have taken offense to this. If it was such a "toxic" environment, as Olney states (without further explanation), it's hard to imagine that Ortiz (and Beckett) would have gone out of their way to defend the clubhouse.
   20. Joe Bivens, Minor Genius Posted: June 20, 2012 at 06:57 PM (#4162269)
And a DH is not a true ballplayer.

Foolishness. He played 1B in the NL parks and was fine. If you have Gonzalez, Youkilis and Ortiz, which would you use at 1B?

Yes, you should. Great read.

it's funny to imagine Pedroia as the littlest rabbit, Fiver.
Fiver was too dreamy and mystical, doesn't really fit Pedey. But then again he isn't Pipkin either.

Jacoby is Speedwell, or whichever was the really fast one.

The real question is who is the wise leader Hazel? Probably the departed Varitek.

Sounds like Ortiz might be the problem.. "I run this clubhouse?" really? Get over yourself, buddy.

There is no more arrogant line. People who say "get over yourself" are the ones who need to get over themselves.
   27. cercopithecus aethiops Posted: June 21, 2012 at 07:41 AM (#4162558)
Toxic? Olney was talking about swamp gas seeping into the bowels of Fenway from four centuries worth of landfill. The EPA is all over this.
   28. SandyRiver Posted: June 21, 2012 at 08:53 AM (#4162589)
Watership Down is closer although I can't remember any of the rabbits' names.

Maybe. Ortiz = Bigwig makes sense, but Shaughnessy = Woundwort, none at all. I see CHB more like one of the rabbits from the warren of the snares. Ellsbury as Blackberry is good, but who is Dandelion, the imaginative strategist? Theo?

The language of #11 looks definitely (to me) like a parody of Gandalf on the Bridge of Khazad-dum.

I really don't see how.

I have never found I know you are but what am I to be a particularly convincing argument, but the notion of me having any feelings about myself other than hatred and resentment or an over inflated sense of anything except self loathing is amusing.

That Ortiz may be less of a ######### than me doesn't mean he isn't one.
   31. Ray (RDP) Posted: June 21, 2012 at 11:58 AM (#4162754)
Don't look now, but despite everything that has gone wrong this year, the Red Sox currently have the third best run differential in the AL, and fifth best in the majors. They are "only" two games about .500 so the losses have been banked, but they're a better team than their record. And that's with getting nothing out of:

Ellsbury
AdrGonzalez
Youkilis
Crawford
Bailey
Bucholz
Matsuzaka (not that much was expected from him)

And subpar years out of:
Pedroia
Lester
Beckett

Yes, some of the secondary players have contributed more than expected, but this team should be a lot better in the second half.

I'd propose they change their name to TLTN.

The Lebron and Tiger network..

It's funny, as I am neither a Yankee or Red Sox fan, but I can't stand Ortiz. He just comes off as a blowhard. If he runs this clubhouse, given what's happened there over the past couple years, they need to have another election.

CHB might just be one of the snares.

And who is Kehaar, squawking unintelligible things but benevolent, and fairly powerful compared to the rabbits?

They had to change it because Chris Berman is full of meat from mutant animals and can't be classified as "Entertainment."
