Boston Red Sox in talks to acquire free agent Hanley Ramirez - ESPN Boston

Get ready for the trades.

The Boston Red Sox, not content to wait for third baseman Pablo Sandoval’s decision as to whether he will sign with the club, reportedly have come to terms with Hanley Ramirez on what is expected to be in the range of a five-year, $90 million agreement, FoxSports.com reported Sunday.

Ramirez was set to arrive in Boston on Monday to finalize terms of the deal, according to the report.

Seems like a really good deal for the Red Sox. Given his age I'm very surprised he didn't get at least 6 years.

Ramirez isn't that young; he's 31, and has been injury prone for awhile now. Five years is a long commitment for a player with his track record for breaking down.

Heyman reporting Panda too. 5/~100.
But Panda's reps saying no deal agreed to yet.

Suhweet...

5/100 on Panda + 5/90 on Rameriz = likely less competition for the Cubs on Lester...

FWIW, even with these two signings, the Red Sox payroll is only at about $155, $25 mill under the luxury tax threshhold. I don't know if they'd want to sign 3 long-term deals this winter, but they could.

Cespedes and Victorino probably aren't in Boston by the start of spring training either, so that's another $15-23M off of the payroll depending on how much of Victorino's salary they have to eat to move him.

One benefit for the Sox is that with the protected pick signing Lester (or Scherzer) would at this point only cost them a 4th round pick. Bunching your FA signings together is not a bad idea for that reason. On top of that the Sox have quite a bit of young talent that is likely to be in the lineup for several years so they can carry a few big contracts and by the time Betts/Bogaerts/Owens/et al start making money those contracts will come off the books.

This of course assumes the kids actually work out.

There is also a decent amount of money coming off the books next year with Cespedes, Napoli and Victorino ($45 million between them) all FAs at the end of the year.

Doesn't Lester have no draft pick penalty because of the mid-season trade?

Well yeah. But let's leave facts out of it (oops, forgot about that).

FWIW, Jerry Crasnick says the 5/$90 mill number being reported is not true.

Robothal: Hanley Ramirez terms with #RedSox, per source: Four years, $88M with fifth-year vesting option valued at $22M.

That makes more sense AAV-wise, but why such a short-term deal for him?

Because he's only played a full season once in the last 4 years, and players generally don't get healthier at age 31.

Ah, didn't realize that. We don't get to see small market clubs like the Dodgers very often here.
