Boswell - Dave Martinez Did Sean Doolittle No Favors

For 50 years, managers usually have called on their closers when they led by three runs or fewer. That is, except for the thousands of times when the closer was not the closer because the manager decided to be the manager.

Ever since the Nats bolstered their bullpen, Martinez should have been looking for every way to give Doolittle a lighter load instead of using him eight times in 14 games. The reasons are longer than a fungo bat.

Doolittle was on pace to throw 21 percent more pitches than he ever has in his career — 930 so far this season compared with 1,020 in 2013, the only full season in his career when he has stayed off the IL.

using him eight times in 14 games

For a total of 7 innings. Sure, that rate comes out to 92 games if maintained over 162, but I doubt you could find a normal usage reliever who doesn't have a stretch where he pitches 8 times in 14 games.

Here's how it breaks down:

8/2 - pitch
2 days off
pitch in back to back games
2 days off
day off
pitch back to back games
3 days off
pitch back to back games

At no point did he pitch 3 days in a row.

The reasons are longer than a fungo bat.

Doolittle then took that fungo bat and used it to bludgeon my fantasy team's pitching numbers for the week. Between him and Josh Hader melting down, I'm scrambling to remake my bullpen in two weeks before the playoffs start.

Here's how it breaks down:

One of those back to back lines was twice in the same day for both ends of a doubleheader.

The real problem is that Martinez had, and still has, very limited options. It may improve a bit if Scherzer comes back to give the Nationals some lengthy starts, and Joe Ross & Erick Fedde continue to surprise by being somewhat useful, but the bullpen has repeatedly failed, even when matched up properly. Martinez may not be the Nationals long-term solution, but he’s not the cause of their current woes, and they are sitting in the 1st Wildcard spot at the moment.

NL East or bust!

There are a few conspiracy theorists who suspect that a group of influential, perhaps veteran, players have basically pushed back on Davey to tell him to get out of the way and let the adults run things (to pull from Boswell's article). Strasburg said as much in a recent post-game interview (at about the 0:50 mark) after playing the Reds; his smirk when answering a question about "Davey's leadership" spoke volumes about how little regard he has for his manager.
