BPP: Any player/Any era: Pee Wee Reese

Still waiting on… Any player/Any error: Don Buddin.

Era he might have thrived in: After 1918 and before 2004, baseball life was one long series of crushing blows for Boston and its fans, purgatory punctuated periodically by close calls. This week’s column looks at if Reese could have made a difference in some of the closest of calls: 1946, 1967, 1975, and 1986. Try and name an elite shortstop from those teams. With a guy like Reese around to provide an upgrade, it seems unlikely the Red Sox would have gone 86 years without a world championship.

Why: Johnny Pesky, Rico Petrocelli, Rick Burleson, and some combination of Rey Quinones, Spike Owen, and Ed Romero. These are the men Reese would have unseated taking over short any of the years mentioned above. Of these players, Petrocelli might have been the only one not worth having Reese stand in for, seeing as Petrocelli was good enough in 1969 to hit 40 home runs and lead all shortstops in fielding percentage. Everyone else here is replaceable.

...Would Reese have the same legacy as a man who helped welcome Jackie Robinson to Brooklyn, refusing to join his fellow Southern teammates in signing a petition protesting Robinson’s presence? Maybe not. But perhaps Reese could have brought this same spirit of tolerance to Boston and helped an organization that would ultimately wait until 1959 to field a black player, the last big league team to integrate.

Rick Burleson was a D*MN good shortstop. Before he got hurt Burleson was a grade A defender.

Also, the 1946 version of Pesky was awesome.

Interesting premise, but OTOH there are probably no more than 25 shortstops at their prime in baseball history that Reese wouldn't have been an upgrade on, and even a good team is unlikely to possess one of them.

Also, the 1946 version of Pesky was awesome.

He has Pesky moving to third and taking Rip Russell out of the ineup.

The comment about the Jackie Robinson petition really confused me until I realized they were talking about Pee Wee, not Pokey

My late father-in-law grew up in Louisville. He was several years younger than Reese, and didn't know him personally, but knew people who did. Reese was an enormously popular and respected figure in the Louisville baseball community. My father-in-law switched his major league rooting allegiance from the Cincinnati Reds (closest to Louisville) to the Brooklyn Dodgers when Reese reached the majors.

Even amidst the antics of Dizzy dean on the CBS Saturday Game of the Week, Pee Wee Reese radiated class. I think he might have also had a moderating, a calming, effect on the temperamental TW, too, although that probably needs more explication than I am willing to give it here, especially as some pretty classy guys in their own right, such as Dom DiMaggio, Bobby Doerr, and Johnny Pesky, weren't able to entirely hold Williams's extreme behavior in check. Still, I like to think that Reese may have been able to reach him, especially sense they were both instinctively sensitive to race and they both served in WWII for three years. Reese did have a soothing effect on Robinson who in temperament was remarkably similar to Williams.
