1. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: December 08, 2009 at 08:34 PM (#3406957)This offseason is starting weird.
I'm just going to assume they got those numbers backwards - based on his recent performance, it should be $1.5M base, and $7.5M in bonuses.
I don't blame the Cards for signing Penny, but 7.5m does seem high. Was anyone else bidding here?
As a Cubs fan, I wish I could laugh maniacally at this - but no doubt, Dave Duncan has found his Piniero/Lohse/etc for the year.
Edited that for you.
Giants, but I don't know how high.
Mozeliak has already said it won't have any impact on their ability to sign Holliday. An about-face would kinda undercut an excuse. It's more likely they'll just blame the Yankees for being the Yankees.
He'll do what Dave Duncan always does, and have Penny throw two-seamers.
From the press conference announcing the deal:
"We're pretty sure that Brad has been tipping his pitches since the start of the 2008 season."
Worked well for the Red Sox.
The Cardinals have done pretty well the past couple of years capitalizing on things that didn't work well for the Red Sox.
I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a terrific year from Brad Penny.
17-6, sub-3 ERA, just to piss me off.
Isn't that what people said about Penny when he signed with the Red Sox last year?
Because they don't have any? :-)

I suppose people who thought LaRussa and Duncan worked for Boston last year would've thought it was a good move for Penny to work for them when he signed with Boston.
Ummmm... No. Nope. Not really. Best of luck to the Cards with my boy, Penny.
I haven't paid much attention, but wasn't Duncan on the way out in St. Louis?
