Braves Release Freddy Garcia Despite Pitching Injuries

So, apparently the Braves starting rotation will be:

Julio Teheran
Alex Wood
David Hale
Gus Schlosser*

Mike Minor and Ervin Santana slot in around April 12th.

*You’ll need to search B-REF’s Minor League stats for that one.

Sure, Terry Forster would listen if the Braves called.

It's too bad Rick Camp died last year. What's Steve Avery up to?

This is an actual sequence from Dave O'Brien (AJC Braves beat writer) on Twitter today:

“There’s a lefty throwing in #Braves ‘pen now with no name on jersey. Going out to see. Wren watching him.”

At which point Colin (who occasionally posted) quite reasonably asked if anyone had seen Tom Glavine recently.

DOB put the mystery lefty to rest thusly:

@gondeee He was unidentified and unimpressive. Was all over the place

And thus did Erik Bedard's career with the Braves end, I suppose.

Gus. Fuggin. Schlosser.

Often, teams have a number of built-in offdays early in the season, which could take the pressure off the back of the rotation. However, the Braves do not have a lot of days off. In fact, they have 16 games in a row between April 8th and 23rd. Ugh.

Bedard is in Rays camp on a minor league deal.

Well I didn't see this one coming. Schlosser has pitched really well in Spring Training, and has always posted good minor league numbers, so I'd be willing to give him a chance.

Bedard was released or asked out of his deal last night, I think....

[EDIT] - Bedard didn't make the rotation, but hasn't been released or opted out yet. FYI.

The talking point out of camp was that the Braves wouldn't need a fifth starter until April 12th. They say Santana will be ready by then. Basically the Braves will give their fifth and sixth starters turns in the first two weeks of the season, until their nominal #2 and #3 are ready to go. And apparently Gus Schlosser for the league minimum was preferable to Freddy Garcia at 1.5 mil.

I'm calling it: Schlosser for ROY.

"I think there could be other things that happen, and we just have to stay in a position where we haven’t definitively drawn up the 25 (man roster) until we know who that group’s going to be,” Braves general manager Frank Wren said. “There’s still four days, and other roster decisions that could be made in other camps that could impact that…. Just be patient, we’ll figure it out.”

But we won't know who that group's going to be until you draw up the 25 man roster!! My head hurts.

As desperation plays go, you could do worse than Harang.

I assume Aaron Harang is willing to risk a stint in AAA to maintain a career, where Freddy Garcia is well on the record that he's not. His contract was stipulated on making the ML team in one capacity or another. He's stated clearly that he has no interest in AAA again. So I suspect Harang is coming in to battle Gus Schlosser(!) for sixth man duties, and try to eke out another year for the pension plan.

In Detroit our only question is if he can play shortstop...

Tyler Pastornicky for Max Scherzer. Final offer.

If this were the Cardinals, No Name On Jersey would win 15 games with a 3.50 ERA.

For the Braves, he'll probably be a good long reliever/spot starter.

I wish his name was "Schwinner" instead of Schlosser...

Give Dombrowski a call. After the Fister deal, you never know...

David Hale got shelled today.

Eh. They'll be OK. Maybe they drop 5 games they wouldn't have dropped with a 'normal' level of injuries. It's a long season and they'll probably be in the mix at the end.

Same for Harang in Cleveland. He opted out of his minor league deal today when he was told he wouldn't make the team. Now, I'd be willing to bet that part of that was knowing that he'd have a better shot at making a major league roster in Atlanta, but I don't think he has any interest in riding a minor league bus.

And now, the Braves rotation, starring Alex Wood, Travis Wood, Kerry Wood, Wilbur Wood, Smoky Joe Wood, and Chipper the Wonder Pelican, in "The Thin Man Gets His Meniscus Scoped."
