Braves Set American Flag on Fire At their Home Opener

As a scheduled part of their home opener, the Atlanta Braves set off fireworks before their game against the New York Mets on Tuesday. As an unscheduled part of their home opener, the fireworks set fire to the American flag that flies above the Braves Vision video screen in center field.
“It happened because of new pyrotechnics,” Braves spokesperson Beth Marshall said. “For the first time, they put pyrotechnics on Braves Vision. One of the pyrotechnics flew at the flag and lit it on fire.” Marshall added that the material of the flag is flame retardant, so it went out on its own.

Rick Monday apparently wasn't in attendance.

The Braves spokesperson continued, "While the US flag is out of commission, we just happen to have a copy of the ol' stars and bars that we'll put up in the meantime. Don't worry, your Yankee flag will be back soon."

The flag deserved it.

So you admit this was your doing?

I'm just saying folks named Sherman might avoid the area for a while.

Gotta admit - that there is one attention-getting headline.

So a guy named Sherman burning his own flag would make Rebel sympathizers unhappy?

This is why they already need a new stadium after just 17 years.

You mean their inability to score a run off of Bartolo Colon?

Back in the day there were periodic flag burnings at my college (it was the 80s and it was a bit dated even then, but at my college I was positively right wing). The foreign students were always really puzzled by the whole thing in general. They didn't understand why no one was punishing the idiots (and yes they were idiots) who were doing it.

But yeah great headline and some quality snark up thread. I approve.

Burning a flag that isn't wrapped around a politician is a waste of time.

Did we lose a war or something? That's not America. That's not even Mexico.

Thank goodness that Abe Lincoln designed that thing or who knows what the Braves would've done!

True story: The kid who designed the current flag did it as part of a school assignment to design a new flag. He was given a B-, but the teacher upgraded that to an A when Congress adopted his design.

Well, burning is the authorized way to dispose of a flag, so I guess that is okay.
