Braves.com: Lackey coveted, but Lowe price is right

Even with his disappointing second half, Lowe might have still entered this year’s offseason as the top available free-agent starting pitcher.

...

Given the economic decisions that are seemingly affecting this year’s market, perhaps clubs will start viewing the cheaper Lowe as being a more attractive option than Lackey.

I don’t know if it is true that teams would view Lowe as valuable as Lackey, I just hope that it is. Any ideas on possible landing spots?

Just package him with Soriano and get Pujols. All problems solved. Hire me as GM!

Lowe is absolutely tradeable. Just depends on the amount of money coming and going and who's coming back.

Lowe (with $$$) and Soriano to the O's for Luke Scott and ____? O's have some $$$, don't they?

Depending on the finances, it could open enough payroll to pursue Holliday.

####, I rather have Vazquez. If there really is this much run on Lackey, then what can Vazquez get next year?

Lowe is overpaid, but I think the Angels could take him off the Braves' hands if they're willing to take Gary Matthews Jr and half his salary.

The market has always been there for Lowe. 200+ innings eaters with sparkling resumes don't grow on trees, and one down season isn't going to change that. Lowe makes $15m per year. That is all of $3 million more than Gil Meche will pull in the next two years. It is $8 million LESS than what C.C. Sabathia will make every year, from now until 2015. It's a mil and a half less than A.J. Burnett's next four years.

A conventional wisdom developed that Derek Lowe was somehow overpriced and untradeable. That wisdom ignores the fact that the production most ML franchises would expect from Lowe is going for $12-16 mil on the market. It's not shocking that front offices looking for a starter would weight Lowe - whatever they trade for him more than they would weight John Lackey + two draft picks.

I assume the Braves are paying half of Lil Sarge's salary there, and the Angels get Lowe plus the other half?

I assume the Braves would also be getting something with value, along with the Corporal?

The Braves already released Sarge Lite once, they don't need to do that again. Maybe the Braves and Angels could work something out with Lowe, Soriano, and either Rivera or Morales involved.

I can't imagine the Angels would allow Morales' name to be involved in any trade speculation.

Wood, Rivera, and Sarge Jr. for Lowe and Soriano?

I know that leaves the Halos with a hole at 3rd.

I don't think sam is necessarily wrong about the market for Lowe, but I wouldn't assume the market will be strong. The remainder of the contract is for his age 37-29 years, his K rate dropped this year, he regressed to the level of his road numbers when he was with LA. He does still have value, but I think we can also assume that these facts are also available to prospective teams, none of whom were willing to offer Lowe a deal as good as this one last year, when his case was stronger.
