Brewer: Mariners might rue the day they interfered with proposed Sodo arena

Opening Day: the smell of turf being… protected in advance of sale to a Dodger-sized consortium?

Rue the day.

Mariners president Chuck Armstrong exhumed that ancient clichĂ© Wednesday as he spoke to several media outlets while attempting to do the impossible: explain why the local baseball team has a beef with Chris Hansen’s proposal to build an NBA/NHL arena in its backyard. ....

Asked a pointed question about the Mariners being afraid of competition, Armstrong said, “That’s just wrong.” Asked if the team is conspiring with the Port of Seattle to ruin Hansen’s proposal, Armstrong said, “We’re not in cahoots with the Port.” Asked about the Mariners’ financial contribution to a polling of local residents that seems both anti-arena and deviously deceptive, with questions such as whether they would support a sports arena over public schools (which is as far from the issue as it gets), Armstrong said, “I have not seen any of the questions.”

The Mariners have been in the sports business long enough to know they can’t be the good and bad guy. Their take is nuanced, but they will be looked upon as an enemy of Hansen, an enemy of the Sonics revival and an enemy of the hope that many local sports fans have right now.

As far? How new tax revenue is used is as far from the issue as who you think the Bachelor should have picked or your favorite Civil War general? It's not on point, but it's at least tangentially related.

Sodo arena

I have finally figured out what the "gay agenda" is!

Rue the day? Who talks like that?

Why would the Ms oppose it? What is the "competition" they would face? The Sonics are going to play somewhere, why not near where the Ms play? Or is the claim that he's trying to drive the Sonics out of Seattle altogether?

They moved to Oklahoma City a few years ago.

That plan has worked wonders so far.

OK but what about the Grizzlies? Vancouver is close enough to be relevant right?

That was the Sonics? I'll be damned.

Are the Braves still in Buffalo? :-)

If this arena plan goes through, Seattle might end up as a town with NFL, NHL, NBA, and MLB teams that are all less popular than the local soccer team.

Wait, but Seattle doesn't have a hockey team. Are the Coyotes going to move there or something?
   11. Monty Posted: April 06, 2012 at 08:58 PM (#4099772)
The arena plan involves getting an NBA team and an NHL team. And yeah, everyone's kind of assuming if it happens, it'll be the Coyotes.

"revive Seattle's sports culture," the man says? That culture's just fine; the challenge .is getting people to spend money to sit down and watch others play.

Building an arena on speculation? Hoping that "If you build it, they will come" still works? Sounds risky - even if there were franchises panting to get to Seattle.
   14. Monty Posted: April 06, 2012 at 10:00 PM (#4099788)
No, they're doing it the other way around. If the city approves the plan, first they line up NBA and NHL franchises, then they build the arena.

So, Chuck Armstrong killed Rosie Larsen?

Kansas City's Sprint Center disagrees. Fortunately, it's easy to hear, as the two or three events a month that take place there don't make much noise.

Well done! Wouldn't that be something?

The Mariners' actual motivation IMO is that they are afraid of losing corporate box and suite sales to competing NBA/NHL clubs. Also, they are counting on renegotiating their TV deal in 2015 to cash in like other MLB teams; it'll be harder to extort the local RSN (Root NW) of all that money if the network has NHL and NBA games to air in place of the Mariners.

This would be turnabout; back in the 1990s when the team was good and KeyArena was refreshed, the Sonics were the easy corporate sports entertainment choice compared to the Kingdome teams. With Safeco and Seahawks stadiums built, the suits left KeyArena, sending the franchise value downward and leading to the eventual sale to the Oklahoma City people.

Why does the "To Catch A Predator" guy want to build an arena?

"What are you doing here?"
