Brewers Acquire Jonathan Broxton

I always thought Broxton was pretty Turnbow-y. But he does lead the Reds in games pitched and has a 1.86 ERA, so maybe I’m wrong. (3.52 FIP)

The Reds have traded right-hander Jonathan Broxton to the Brewers, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter link).

Updates: It's for two players to be named later, and:
[Broxton is] owed about $1.19MM of his $7MM salary this season before earning $9MM in 2015. His contract also contained a $9MM club option for 2016, which comes with a $1MM buyout. However, Broxton’s contract has a clause that causes that club option to become a mutual option with a $2MM buyout if he is traded, meaning he is now guaranteed $12.19MM through the end of the 2015 campaign and can reach free agency sooner even with a strong performance next year.

We'll see how much money the Reds are able to save in this deal. Broxton has performed well, but, giving a non-elite reliever 3 years and 20 million was not the best use of resources.

Trading for a guy like this when you end up on the hook for another $12.2 million for a year and a month of service is a little bit like how I;d feel about a hitter busting it down the line on a routine grounder to second base, and then pulling his hamstring on the play.

I appreciate the desire to do everything you can to win, but don't kill yourself in the process, OK?

Broxton also has pitched poorly of late and blown 6 leads this season.

implications for 2015 closer-hood and K-Rod?

the brewers have eyes wide open on frankie. it's believed that prior to this acquisition the closers in waiting were jim hendereson, jeffress, will smith and kyle thornburg

I thought Michael Blazek was still on the 40-man? He can blow leads for a lot cheaper, and he can start too.
