Brewers: Carlos Gomez comes out swinging

While Gomez’s eye has improved, he’s also made some subtle tweaks with his stance and swing.

In the box, he no longer cocks the bat near his right ear. Instead, he rests it on his back shoulder to start, and then raises it slowly as the pitcher enters his windup as a kind of timing mechanism.

“I relax a little bit, focus to see the windup and follow my approach,” said Gomez, who hit .225 with eight homers and 24 RBI last year. “I get more chance to see the ball and have more command of the strike zone.”

And when he decides to swing the bat, he does so now with a different intent.

“I try to hit the ball out of the ballpark every time. That’s my approach,” he said. “When I’m aggressive like that, I’m looking for one pitch, and I try to break the ball in two pieces. When I’m swinging easy, I get into problems, and that’s what made me chase bad pitches.”

Thanks to Vic.

The 1 BB in 38 PA suggests to me this will not be a successful new approach. Well, it can't get worse and re-inventing himself as Tony Armas would be a step in the right direction but I'm betting against the 375 BABIP going forward. Still if he can keep the ISO anywhere near 200, he's likely to be more valuable than he was.

“I get more chance to see the ball and have more command of the strike zone.”

Isn't it pitchers who have command of the strike zone? Or not?
