Brewers’ Carlos Gomez gets robbed, has his revenge against the Reds

Carlos Gomez is the type of guy who always seems to find himself at the center of something. On Thursday he was integrally involved in the the two best plays of the night.

The Brewers’ sparkplug-slash-nemesis of those who defend all rules that are unwritten hacked at the first pitch of the game from the Reds’ Homer Bailey and seemed destined for his 17th extra base hit of this young season, but Billy Hamilton had other ideas. Hamilton raced into the gap in right-center, dove into the air and snagged Gomez’s liner. It wasn’t all good news for the Reds – Hamilton reportedly sprained the third and fourth knuckles on his left hand and will miss a few games – but it was another reminder of the many ways his speed can impact the game, and of how quickly a player who was exclusively a middle infielder until last season has taken to centerfield

In the bottom of the inning, it was Gomez’s turn to flash both his athleticism and his leather. This time Joey Votto swung at the first pitch he saw from Brewers starter Marco Estrada and drove it high and deep to center. Gomez raced back, drifted to his right and then curled back to the left before turning his back to the wall. One perfectly timed leap later and a certain Votto homer had become a harmless flyout:

Gomez, being Gomez, exulted and pounded his fist into his glove, but Votto, to his credit, appeared to take no offense. Instead he flashed two fingers towards center, not in order to flip the international bird to Gomez but to remind him, as if he needed it, that he’d robbed him before, to end a game last July.

Last year, Gomez also robbed Jay Bruce of a 3 run HR in the top of the 9th of a tie game.

Joey's smiling when signalling to Gomez that he's now robbed him twice. How ####### Canadian of him...

OMG, he showed some emotion after making a good play! Stone him! Get McCann on the next flight to Milwaukee to discipline him!

...or you could just be cool like Joey Votto and realize the game is supposed to be fun. Points for Joe.

Seriously, the writer seems to be trying to shoehorn a nasty narrative into what looked like just a fun moment.

Gomez, being Gomez not being a cyborg incapable of emotion, exulted and pounded his fist into his glove

good thing brandon phillips never gets excited about anything.

//not criticizing phillips because i like watching him play. just interesting how two guys who are similar in their energy levels get perceived. gomez is now demon spawn while phillips is 'fiery' or some such

I don't think the writer was criticizing Gomez, but poking fun at the perception of him.

I love Joey Votto. Such a class act.

I assumed Gomez had gotten mugged somewhere in Cincinnati and that this thread had become an excursus on race and criminality.

You know what, don't give him a budget to manage, but Omar Minaya is a damn good scout. Gomez was once derided here as a "tools goof."

Entirely possible that Gomez is just a general dick and Phillips is not. The players would know, and the media might, but we wouldn't.

We do know about Philips' dickish moaning about teammates' new contracts.

regarding phillips certainly the cards as a team hold some animus.

certainly gomez has had some actions that have drawn negative attention. i am unaware of opposing players expressing a distaste for gomez the person.

And about him confronting journalists while they interview Dusty Baker.

If no in general, Phillips is quite certainly a dick at times:

As Harvey noted, the Cards hate him, and I think it's justified - the "tapping the catcher with his bat" thing may have been just a thing, but after his comments he had to know where it would lead.

The "fat MFer" tirade directed at Rosecrans after he had the audacity to suggest that BP's .310 OBP wouldn't be much of an improvement over Todd Frazier's .320.

He hasn't talked to local media since before spring training.

Phillips is really something. Hijacks a thread about two of the most exciting players in the NL when he wasn't involved in either play.

I don't think the article was knocking Gomez, just illustrating a nice moment between Votto and Gomez.
   19. Al Kaline Trio Posted: May 02, 2014 at 06:33 PM (#4699238)
Gomez shouldn't show so much emotion on the field. He should release it by playing with his train set after the game.

That'll teach Votto to swing the bat! Walk next time you goof!
