Brewers designate Mench for assignment

Look out Shatner…another Big Giant Head is free!

The Milwaukee Brewers have designated outfielder Kevin Mench for assignment, clearing the way for reliever Salomon Torres to join the 40-man roster, the team announced in a statement this morning.

Mench appeared in 101 games last season with the Brewers, serving primarily in a left-field platoon with Geoff Jenkins. The right-handed batter hit .267 with eight home runs and 37 RBIs.

Torres had told Milwaukee general manager Doug Melvin that he was pondering retirement rather than reporting to the Brewers, who acquired him recently in a trade with Pittsburgh to shore up a bullpen that lost closer Francisco Cordero and set-up man Scott Linebrink to free agency.

Mench made $3.4 million in 2007, the last year of his contract. Milwaukee had the option of re-signing him, offering salary arbitration or releasing him.

I'll bet he's being named in the Mitchell report, have you seen his hat size!?

He can mash lefties. Should make a decent platoon partner.

Padres bound?

He'd be a nice addition to the Mets as he could platoon with Church when Alou's healthy and with Endy when Alou's out of the lineup.

He was rumoured to be dealt to multiple teams last year for non-negligle returns, what a difference a year makes.

Only off the bench. Can you imagine his D in that park?

That's why the MLB player hats have to be made in the USA.

Red Sox could use him as a 4th.

^ Brewers scraps picked up by Red Sox!!

Wow, maybe the Brewers can win the World Series.

The Yankees have no use for him.

The Mets could get him some face paint and use him as their backup mascot.

I bet the Bucs could have gotten him for Torres.

I think he'll go back to Texas.

Where will Brad Wilkinson end up? Back with the Nats or go to the Marlins or Rays?

"I bet the Bucs could have gotten him for Torres."

Why would they have wanted him? He isn't any better than Bay or Nady or Pearce...

Could fit with the Twins if they dump Craig Monroe. I think I'd rather have Craig Monroe, he's a much better defender.

I was thinking platoon guy, perhaps sharing LF with Jenkins again. (Actually I was just thinking he's an OF and the Padres need like 3 of those, at least. Stick him next to Coco—or like defensive CF wiz—and it wouldn't be *that* bad. Okay, maybe it would... but, but he's an OF! And not Termel Sledge!)

It would make my week if Mench wound up back on the Rangers. Despite his shortcomings, he is my single favorite active player, and I hated the fact that we traded him in the first place.

Besides, the Rangers have lots of vacancies in the outfield.

Somebody better sign him so he can become "Delaware's most prolific home run hitter," as his B-Ref sponsor hopes.

Mench has 89 career home runs. The record for a native Delawarean is 96, held at the moment in an improbable three-way tie.

Dave May, Randy Bush, and ... John Mabry? What are you trying to do to this thread?

Ha, that Delaware baseball group is very proud.
I remember looking at Ian Snell's BRef page last week, and seeing their sponsorship there also. "Ian Snell, best pitcher from Delaware since World War I", or something.

I'm a Mench fan, but I have to say that he really looks awful in the outfield. He'd be best on a team like the Twins where they can hide him at DH part of the time and enjoy the improvement over Rondell White.

Guess I'll have to change my handle...

Whomever picks him up has to put him in an over the top no matter what platoon. He is terrible vs righties, he is a mediocre to poor fielder, he is a bad base runner. The biggest problem with him is that he got hot and Yost let him hit vs rigthies so he got too many AB's.

I'm also not sure anyone wants to give him a raise. A good bat vs lefties who sucks at every other part of the game is not a bargain at the $4M he'll get with a raise.

Mench will end up with the Red Sox if Allard Baird has any say about it. Baird was probably on the phone with Mench's agent the minute the Brewers dropped him.
