Brewers sign [Randy] Wolf, Hawkins as 12 other pitchers change teams

The Brewers, whose starting rotation tied for the worst ERA in baseball with the Baltimore Orioles last season, signed Wolf to a three-year, $29.75 million contract — his first multi-year contract since 2002.

Hawkins’ deal was worth $7.5 million over two years.

“It really shows the demand there is in pitching,” agent Scott Boras said. “Wolf pitched very well this year (11-7, 3.23 ERA), but the issue in his past has been durability. A year-and-a-half of health has brought him a three-year contract. I think that illustrates a very aggressive market for pitching.”

Somewhere Frank Wren realizes he's going to have to give up a bunch of cash to get rid of Derek Lowe. Given the age difference and relative differences in performance last year, it's hard to imagine some team will value the next three years of Lowe more highly than what Wolf just got. I suppose that could change as the winter goes on and fewer pitchers are available, but this seems like bad news for Wren.

I'm shocked, shocked! that Scott Boras anticipates a very aggressive market.

Holy crap. Given that the Orioles played in the AL, in a division with teams bearing OPS+ of 104, 104, 105, and 122, it's almost inconceivable that the Brewers could be as bad as them in starters' ERA.

If your reaction after the fact is "Holy crap", imagine what we were saying as the carnage unfolded around us. Also, you have to consider that Gallardo was pitching every fifth game. The contrast was remarkable: pitches that hitters actually swing and miss at! Behold!

Wow. 78% of Brewers games were started by pitchers with an ERA+ of 77 or worse! The Brewers staff sported a nifty 83 ERA+. That's almost as bad as the famously inept 1996 Tigers (80).

Fun Fact: Braden Looper (14-7 ERA+ 77) had the same win% as Zack Greinke (16-8 ERA+ 205).

Or maybe it just illustrates how few decent starting pitchers have even a year-and-a-half of health.
