Brewers to unveil Wall of Honor on Friday

The Brewers Hall of Fame
The Brewers Hall of Very Good
The Brewers Wall of Guys Who Played for the Brewers

In what might be the largest gathering ever of former Brewers players in one place at one time, the Brewers will unveil the newest major addition to Miller Park on Friday.

Hall of Famers Hank Aaron, Rollie Fingers and Robin Yount will be [ 58 Brewers ] greats in attendance for an afternoon ceremony at the Brewers Wall of Honor, a new installation outside the ballpark to commemorate longtime contributors to the club.

With a name like Don Money it has to be good!

Here are the Giants Wall of Fame members. 9 years with the team or 5 years with an all star appearance thrown in. Not all of those guys are famous, but if a player meets those two criteria I imagine there are plenty of the team's fans who have fond memories of the player. Except for Johnny effin LeMaster.

Johnnie LeMaster's is my favorite, because his engraving has him swinging (and missing) at a pitch, affording the viewer the chance to see the back of his jersey.

I just assumed---because he was such a terrible hitter----that Johnnie LeMaster at least had a decent glove, but checking bb-ref shows a negative dWAR in five of his seven seasons as the Giants' regular shortstop. I don't think that would fly these days...

My favorite Don Money story:

A good friend of mine absolutely loved Don Money when he was playing with the Phillies. He frequently told his eventual wife (who was not a baseball fan) how much loved Don Money. So one year after they got married, she got the idea that she would buy him a Don Money baseball card for Christmas. Hearing my friend talk about Don Money, she set aside enough money for the card that it would be his big gift for Christmas.

You can imagine her surprise when she went to the card shop and the dealer asked her for five bucks in exchange for the card.

Wow. I originally thought of Willie Bloomquist and looked him up. He has a career OPS+ of 79 in 1000 career games. LeMaster played 1039 games with an OPS+ of 60. Holy crap, he was demonstrably worse than Willie Bloomquist. That's hard to do.

I guess the Wall of Honor is the club's response to the fact the club's Hall of Fame no longer inducts anyone from the Brewers (it's been almost 10 years since a former Brewer was inducted, the celebrated in cheap cardboard Don Money and Harvey Kuenn).

Dan Plesac, the new Frankie Frisch. Couldn't they find anyone to induct who wasn't his teammate?

I'm all in favor of a large "wall of honor" or whatever you want to call it. The Giants plaques outside the stadium are great, and why limit it to only the top tier of players? Guys like Marichal and McCovey get their statues. The big question is what teams will do with guys like Bonds and McGwire. (IIRC, the McGwire statue is done and in mothballs somewhere in STL, right?) I really hope the Giants do the right thing and put Bonds and his elbow armor in a statue. And soon.
   24. cardsfanboy Posted: June 13, 2014 at 03:20 PM (#4725207)
I like the large "honor", but I'm not sure I agree with it all at once. Spread it out over several years, that way you have marketing opportunities each year. Obviously the older guys who are to the point that they might croak in the next year, you want to put in with the inaugural class, but hold off on some of the more recent guys.

Cardinals inducted everyone in the hof, then had a vote to induct four more guys, Edmonds, McGee, Marion and Shannon with Simmons, Hernandez, Bob Forsch, Mark McGwire, Matt Morris, and Joe Torre going in at a later date . (everyone on the ballot will probably be in shortly, but this way it's a news story every year)

Yes, they did, actually--they decided to revive it in '06, which is why there were so many inductees that year

I'm sure at a future date, but he didn't make the original cut. (they had a vote, with those guys I listed) I imagine with his return the booth in St Louis, it will help up his profile. (for this honor)
