Brewers trade McGehee to Pirates for Veras

Trade of potential non-tenders.

The Brewers acquired reliever Jose Veras from the Pirates for infielder Casey McGehee, the teams announced.

Pirates presumably want a hedge in the event that Alvarez’s development continues to stall - or possibly to move Pedro to first. Brewers continue to add bullpen pieces.

Jose Veras is only 31? I must be thinking of another guy.

At least this forecloses the frightening possibility of Casey McGehee replacing Prince Fielder.

What a wonderful day for Harvey.

How bad is Pedro Alverez if Casey McGehee is the insurance?

If you are the Pitarea, why?

PNC has a dep left field

Casey only homers to left

Casey pretty poor at third and Pirates pitchers put balls in play

What's the point?

I saw the headline and immediately wondered why the Pirates were carrying Quilvio Veras.

So, I'm getting old now.

I guess negotiations stalled with the top prize on the free agent market Wilson Betemit, so they needed to bring in another sort-of-well-known player that fans have either vaguely heard of but aren't sure who he is, or have heard of and think he sucks. The same old Pirates strategy for kindling excitement.

This is about Alvarez, not McGehee. The Pirates are doing what they've done with their younger, underperforming players in the past; bring in a veteran "name" who has experience as a starter to "push" him so that he doesn't take his job for granted. Usually that has the opposite effect of what the team intends, though.

It seems like just a few months ago when people thought the Pirates were going to be a factor in the NL Central pretty soon. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

That's what I thought when I saw the headline as well!!!

I guess the Cubs just have to wait a few years for their next long-term 3B!

Mike Emeigh makes a good point. This trade will also have the salutary effect of not actually pushing Alvarez to justify his place in the lineup. At least McGehee isn't a one-year rental (becomes a free agent after 2014), so hopefully this works out better than the strategy to get the best out of that underachieving Jose Bautista by bringing in Doug Mientkiewicz. Or the previous effort to motivate Freddy Sanchez and Bautista simultaneously by giving their playing time to Joe Randa.

I don't mean to an ass, but who bats cleanup for this team? McCutchin should obviously be hitting third, but who's 4th? Walker? Alverez? (gulp) McGehee?

Heh, ditto -- then I thought "No, it's not him... Is this Dave Veres just misspelled? No - I think he's older than Quilvio." Then I told some kids to get off my lawn. Now I'm having a nice glass of warm milk.

Nate McLouth? Erik Bedard? Casey McGehee? The Drive for 75 - 2012 EDITION!

Bedard is a replacement for a different (and more expensive) veteran starter, Paul Maholm, and McLouth is going to be a bench player. Neither one is blocking a ML-ready young player. As such, your scorn is unwarranted.

I don't really see how one can criticize the McGehee acquisition. It's not a monumental move, but it certainly beats heading into the season with Josh Harrison as your backup to Alvarez.

I'd be happier if they locked up McCutchen. Or if Alvarez developed. Or if they'd pay money to bring in a legitimate above-average major league starting player. But that's not to say this is a bad trade. It isn't.

I think you were thinking of the right guy. It seems like Jose has been around forever.

For those not aware after his solid 2010 the Brewers offered Casey a multi-year deal. McGehee declined and settled for a year.

Seriously? Wow. He got some really bad advice from someone.

Given his age, skill set, the time it took him to get to the majors, and his family situation, he should have been looking/should be looking for all of the guaranteed money he could get.

Now that someone mentioned him, I think I was thinking of Dave Veres. But it could be.

Not 100% certain but my guess is that Casey figured his next contract would be his best chance to score big so he figured another 2010 and he could really rake in the cash.

That's what I suspect anyway.

Casey only homers to left

I don't think that's true. He can drive the ball to right decently. Check out HitTracker.
