Brisbee: Guillermo Mota Suspended For 100 Games For Positive PED Test

Con 5.06 ERA….............

Oh, hello, unexpected news.

Morosi: BREAKING: Guillermo Mota of #SFGiants receives 100-game suspension after testing positive for Clenbuterol, a performance-enhancing substance

If whatever he was taking was performance-enhancing, I sure as hell hope he saved the receipt.

...Mota was some sort of warped, dystopian version of a setup man this year. I liked how Bochy used him last year; I was terrified of how he was being used this year. Looks like it’s all for naught now.

A 100-game suspension will put him out until the end of August, which makes me think he’ll be back with the team when the rosters expand. If he was pitching like that with the PEDs, though, I shudder to think what Mota’s like au naturel these days.

So does that mean we get to erase all his shitty stats from the record books?

Too bad Omar Minaya isn't a GM anymore. He would love to sign Mota next year.

This guy's career has got a little bit of everything: conversion from position player, being part of controversial and blockbuster trades, famous brawls, the world series, and now a drug suspension.

He's one of the few guys with a season in which he homered in his only AB.

Edit: Looked it up - it was actually his first career AB, too.

This is going to kill the Giants. Mota would have gotten them a dozen outs in the next 100 games.

This is why BBRef's PI is such a time sink. Someone makes a statement like this and of course you have to see who else has done it.

Hernandez and Yan also had a sac bunt, so they don't really count. Eddie Rogers is my favorite on the list. He was a position player who appeared in 8 games and scored 4 runs, but only got 1 PA.

Wow, there's someone in baseball as stupid as Manny Ramirez is. I have to admit I didn't think that was possible.

Clenbuterol is used mainly for weight loss by bodybuilders, or for increased lung capacity by endurance athletes. What gain a MLB pitcher thinks he would get out of that drug is a head scratcher to me. Though Mota never struck me as the sharpest knife.

Not sure why mota's performance is getting *that* much flack. Not that bad and <10 innings...

I looked up his game by game performance. He got rocked for 5 runs (4 earned) at Coors Field in his second appearance but since then he's slowly brought his ERA down from 15.43 to 5.06. He has six scoreless appearances in his 9 games and he has 9 Ks in 10 innings. So yeah, not that bad.

He was bad last year, too.

He's a bad pitcher, really. Although the Mets fans are upset because he was bad 5 years ago.

Uh, it already had the last one.

Also, I really do hate Mota, and wish him ill. And he's ugly.

Actually they are mostly mad because he threw at Piazza.

I'm against these suspensions, but wouldn't mind seeing Mota get a lifetime ban.

Clenbuterol is used mainly for weight loss by bodybuilders, or for increased lung capacity by endurance athletes.

That's for what Alberto Contador tested positive in 2010, for example.
   19. Knock on any Iorg Posted: May 07, 2012 at 10:43 PM (#4125994)
Honest question, are these tests foolproof? Could he have tested positive for clenbuterol while it was caused by another substance? MLB Network said he will appeal.

Clenbuterol is used mainly for weight loss by bodybuilders, or for increased lung capacity by endurance athletes.

I'm guessing he used it for the latter purpose, so he could more effectively run away like a ##### after throwing a fastball at someone's head.

Exactly, now it's got even more of everything: 2 drug suspensions!

Third strike is a life ban, right? It's like the only thing he's missing. His crowning achievement....

My fondest memory of Mota was him saving 50 games for me in MVP 2005 on PS2.

For anabolic steroids. Clenbuterol is not a steroid. Are all PEDs treated the same now?

Mota's agent claims it was children's cough syrup that tripped up Mota... that or herpes... but probably children's cough syrup.

can someone explain why a substance which is not a performing enhancer for baseball players is called a performing enhancer and banned?

Isn't Clen popular for PCT? I think that might be what it's a banned PED. Like HCG, it's indicative of use of other substances.

I would imagine because it can act like a stimulant. Were I a MLB pitcher and looking for a stimulant, I think clen would be last on my go-to list.

I read a claim in the ESPN article that clen has "anabolic effects. Athletes and body builders use it to build muscle and burn fat." Burn fat yes, but I've never heard of a study that proves that it builds muscle. From what I remember, clen has anabolic effects on livestock due to an abundance of alpha3 receptors, which humans lack.

Isn't Clen popular for PCT?

No.
