Brodie Van Wagenen’s Mets take doesn’t match what we’re seeing

an Wagenen noted the potential to climb with home-and-home series approaching against the Braves and Phillies, interspersed with four games at Wrigley Field and two home games against the Yankees. That takes the Mets to the All-Star break. It feels make-or-break.

And even if it doesn’t break these Mets, what can we expect in the second half? The Athletics were 34-35 through June 14 last year, then went an MLB-best 63-30 to earn a wild card. But Oakland in this century has regularly surged: the A’s have six of the 65 best second-half records since 2001. The Mets have none.

Will this team with bad defense, terrible pen, meh offense and thin rotation find .600 ball between here and the finish line?

“I don’t think we are looking at anything as a lost season,” Van Wagenen said. “We have talent, we have heart and we have a group of people who believe in each other and will pick each other up.”

Honestly, if this team just has one good stretch of like 15-5 baseball they're right in the middle of the wild card and divisional race. They're good enough to do that.

They are also bad enough to go 5-15. That is why they are a .500 team.

Not really related to the topic of the article but the Mets have run themselves out of a lot of innings this year. Lagares just did it trying to go to second on an RBI single. I don't watch every game but it seems like somebody makes the last out on the basepaths at least once per game in the ones that I do see. Jeff McNeill, despite all of his great qualities, is 0-4 on stolen base attempts this season. Are the base coaches just bad?

Also the defense is just putrid.

From our friends at bWAR central, the Mets are -4 on the bases and -32 on defense. McNeil is -3 on the bases. Overall they have -3 WAA with slightly above-average starters, bad pen (the whole NL has bad pens apparently) and below-average position players. CF is the most obvious position to upgrade but really, other than Alonso, Conforto and McNeil, any place on offense could use an upgrade.

That is not really true. Ramos is hitting well and it is hard to improve on his 105 OPS+ as a catcher. His defense is not so good.

The only really bad offense is second and center. Second base is a hole, so move McNeil there and play Dominic Smith in left and that is covered. Doubt the Mets will give up on Cano that quickly though. I think they are waiting on Nimmo to return to fix center. His defence there is also bad in center. Whether his neck will heal is a question.

The Grandal thing is still frustrating IMO.

Cano is hitting RHP fine this year (.779 OPS). But he absolutely cannot hit lefties at all (.330 OPS albeit in only 50 PA). He has a pretty heavy career platoon split but nothing like this.

McNeil also bats lefty but has no meaningful platoon splits, so he should at least be playing there against lefty starters.

But they have heart, guys. Heart!

Although I guess he didn't specify whether it's like "Barracuda"/"Crazy on You" Heart or "These Dreams"/"What About Love" Heart.

#6 by "offense" I meant "position player." The Mets are 12th (of an overall uninspiring lot) in the NL at C with -0.5 WAA. So it's far from their top priority for improvement but nobody would object to improving it. Ramos has been fine (-0.1 WAA) but the back-ups have been lousy.

Anyway, C 12th, 2B 12th, SS 14th, CF 15th. (LF 9th, 3B 10th) I assume 2B and LF are kinda OK only because those are the two spots McNeil has mostly played.

But sure, there are potential solutions here, at least hitting-wise, by having McNeil continue to float 2B-3B-LF, hope Frazier carries on, Smith certainly against RHP in LF (possibly Davis vs LHP).

I'm starting to think maybe trading the team's best prospects for a relief pitcher and a 36-year-old second baseman coming off a steroid suspension wasn't such a hot idea.

If they hadn't given up the prospects, I might have been ok with it. But Cano is a block and won't be able to play second soon. They need to eat money (like the Mariners did with Bruce) and move him.
