Bruce Bochy meets with free-falling Giants ahead of 10th straight loss

I was expecting that the Giants doing as well as they were in relative terms wasn’t particularly sustainable- I just wasn’t expecting things to fall apart so completely so suddenly…..

SAN FRANCISCO — Bruce Bochy doesn’t like admitting that his team is out of the race no matter how many consecutive losses might pile up. He doesn’t like admitting that they’re playing poorly, and on three consecutive days he has talked about how many of the last 10 losses could have easily flipped the other way.

But Bochy did make a concession to the reality of the situation on Tuesday afternoon. He met with his team, talking for about five minutes about the importance of playing hard and holding each other accountable. That is not a meeting you have when you’re trying to clinch a playoff spot. It’s the type of meeting you have when you’re losing every night and looking flat, as the Giants have while dropping 10 straight for the first time in 22 years.

“This is a tough time of year when you’re going through something like this,” Bochy said after a 4-1 loss to the Braves. “It’s about character right now. You get in these tough times, it does build character.”

You know your sports team is in trouble when they start talking about “building character”.

I always wondered - if losing builds character, then does winning destroy character?

Second big losing year in a row for Bochy.

Do the 3 WS wins buy him more time, or is he on the way out?

I'm in SF, and sports radio here is salty in general toward the Giants. But now that it's football season, all eyes are on the 49ers, so Bochy's (or the Giants') failures in September will largely fly under the radar, especially if Jimmy Garoppolo gets a hangnail.

If 3 WS wins doesn't, then our national fixation with "what have you done for me lately" has reached a new high (or low, depending on how you look at it).

Well, Torre had 4 wins, and from 2001 to 2007 never produced less than a 94 win season for the Yankees, and he was shown the door.

I wonder what sports radio you listen to, if not KNBR and 95.7?

As of a couple weeks ago - so, after the initial euphoria of NFL training camp starting, but before anything actually interesting happens - happened to coincide with the point at which it became clear that the Giants were not going to be competing down the stretch this season. There were rumblings that Posey was going to have surgery and end his season, the understanding that McCutchen would be traded by the end of August was starting to bubble to the surface, etc. During this time there was also quite a bit of discussion about what would happen to Bochy - would he get Scoscia'd, what was his standing in the organization, that kind of stuff. Consensus pretty much emerged that he was going to play out his contract - he has one more season after this one - and that would be it. Nothing to do with his number of wins since the 3 rings, or anything performance-related at all, really. Just that as the character of the team changed over time, so too should the character of the manager, and that, having shoved their chips in for this season, neither party was going to be all that interested in having Boch oversee the next big roster overhaul.

So, short answer to 'is he on the way out' is: 'yes and no'. He'll be here next season, he won't get fired, and he won't be back.

Didn’t they play over their head all year and now coming back to earth? I thought he did a great job keeping them on the fringe of the race for so long.
