Bryce Harper in for Giancarlo Stanton in All Star Game; Desmond replaced by Bourn

WASHINGTON—Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond, who has been on an offensive tear over the last two weeks, will be held out of the All-Star Game this week because of an oblique issue that has bothered him this season. He was replaced on the team by Braves outfielder Michael Bourn.

But the Nationals gained an All-Star when Bryce Harper was named to the National League squad by manager Tony La Russa to replace Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton, who will be out four to six weeks because of a knee injury…

Very glad to see this; I think it's Good for the Sport to be able to "introduce" Harper in this way.

The only two players younger than Harper in an All-Star Game were Dwight Gooden (in 1984) and Hall of Famer Bob Feller (1938).

I still would like to see Martin Prado make it somehow.

Gooden and Feller, huh....

So, even money that Harper becomes a coke head or an insufferable old coot. Seems reasonable. :-)

Or Omar Infante!! :-)

With Stanton out, there are no Marlins. Desmond out could have reasonably resulted in picking Hanley, Reyes or, yes, Infante (who's having a solid season) while keeping the Marlins represented and the same roster depth. But I suppose Freese winning the last man vote kinda did that anyway.

Gooden's still got plenty of time to become a coke head and an old coot.

That's a clown prediction, bro.

####, I really wanted to see Stanton in the HR derby.

My extremities are tingling from the distinct vibe that Tony will not get Harper into the game.

Maybe it isn't a probability, but I don't think it would be a surprise.

How scrappy is he?

Reyes

has sucked. Which, even as Mets fan in the division, I'm not really happy about. I hope he rebounds next year to 2011 levels.

I like Harper a lot so this doesn't bug me, but Prado and Heyward are having better years.

Desmond played yesterday, and hit a homer, which makes it kind of odd that he'd be too hurt to play in the All-Star game. It would be understandable for a veteran who had been in a lot of ASGs to prefer a three-day break, but this may well be Desmond's only selection.

What are the odds that Ruben Tejada outperforms Reyes over the life of Reyes' contract?
   14. TerpNats Posted: July 08, 2012 at 11:41 AM (#4176061)
La Russa probably won't get another chance to manage Harper, so he'll put Bryce in the game.
   15. Jim (jimmuscomp) Posted: July 08, 2012 at 11:58 AM (#4176073)
Maybe LaRussa can use this chance to piss him off like Rasmus.

TLR loves him some rookies, especially ones with an attitude.

All kidding aside, I hope Harper and Trout get to play half the game and get two PA's each. At least one of them deserves that.

From Twitter:

Samson just not happy all 29 other teams will be represented and #Marlins won't. Thinks Dobbs, Cishek, Ruggiano were options

LOLWUT

Ruggiano is hitting up a storm, so it's not entirely ridiculous, but more realistically, they could have taken Anibal Sanchez.

If you consider the disparity in pay, I don't doubt that Tejada will provide better value over the life of the Reyes' contract. But I think there were a few of us who thought that going into 2012. I don't think even someone as high on Tejada as Lassus thought Ruben would outperform Jose. Without taking defense into account and just comparing slash lines, Tejada has been Reyes-like:
.327/.384/.409

And Reyes is at:
.266/.337/.382

Tejada has 14 less runs in 42 less games.

I'm bummed to see Stanton miss the ASG/HR derby as well. Seems like he has been in the league longer; still just 22 with 75 career homers already. Crazy power.

I await all the articles about Marlins fans who will be attending the game in Kansas City and are outraged by this.

Are you implying that the six Marlins fans who will be attending the game in KC should not be outraged by this?

I actually doubt there will be that many Marlins fans that don't either work for the Marlins or are closely related to one of their employees at the All-Star Game. I'd put the over-under on that at 0.5, probably.

So one David Samson would be a push?

Best regards.

Jake Peavy was named to the All-Star team as a replacement for C.J. Wilson. Glad he finally made it, he definitely deserves it.

even money that Harper becomes...an insufferable old coot.

July 4, 2076: 83-year-old Bryce Harper celebrated America's tricentennial with a game-winning home run in the Old-Timers All-Star Game today. "Hmph. These kids today are all a bunch of clowns, bro!" said the curmudgeonly Hall of Famer after the game, which featured Julio Franco tossing out the first pitch.

Hmm...this is awesome, but I was sort of thinking it would be good for Harper to have the all star game as motivation next year. Hopefully he and Mike Trout can start a Mantle/Mays rivalry

Yeah, when PF asked that I was ready to provide some kinda THIS GUY, but even I didn't predict that.
