Bryce Harper leaves high school early, and it makes sense

A buddy of mine did this in high school…but that was only after he caved-in the vice-principal’s head with a suddenly free Master Lock.

It’s a shocking headline at first. But the most surprising part of Bryce Harper’s (or his dad’s) decision is that it makes total sense.

Harper, the Las Vegas high school catcher who was on the cover of Sports Illustrated, will forgo his final two years of high school, get his GED and play community college baseball next year at the College of Southern Nevada. His father, Ron, made the announcement Saturday at a tournament in Oklahoma City.

“Bryce is always looking for his next challenge,” Ron Harper told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “He’s going to pursue his education, too. He’s going to get pushed academically and athletically. I don’t see a problem with it. I think we’ve handled it the right way. I think it will be a great story.”

Harper will turn 17 on Oct. 16, and by finishing high school he will be eligible for the 2010 draft, where he is expected to be the No. 1 pick and command a multimillion-dollar signing bonus. (His dad says the family isn’t sure if Bryce will enter the draft in 2010 or ‘11. Take a guess which way that’ll come out.)

the last two years of high school ought to be about the two best years of a person's life, and I'm sorry he's going to miss them.

The last two years of high school are better than being ridiculously rich? I don't think you quite understand just how much you are able to do with $20,000,000.00 (minus legal fees and taxes or course).

You never went to my high school.

For some people, the last two years of high school probably are fantastic. For many others of course, they are sheer hell. Star athletes probably are more often in the former category - but millionaire post high school star athletes are likely better off than high school athletes.

And it's not like he won't be able to bang high school cheerleaders still. He'll still be the right age, and he'll still be a very prominent local athlete.
   104. NotLikely20 Posted: June 15, 2009 at 05:42 PM (#3220034)
Extremely wise decision. I expect to see stud American basketball players around the ages of 14-17 start doing the same thing(or go to Europe).

Also, I cringed when I got the SI with the 16-year-old next great thing on the cover. Terrible thing to do to a kid.

When I saw this current article, my first thought was "great job by his PR team getting him on the SI cover, so they could immediately announce this."

If high school was the best years of your life, then you're living a pretty bad life. You don't want to be the guy that constantly reminiscences about your high school glory days.

Mark me down for the $2000 as well.

Amen Monty, I feel sorry for anyone that peaked in high school, although I must say I was classmates with a lot of them.

Mike Golic is not so hot.

High school sucked. Harper is lucky he gets to skip the last two years.
   113. The Good Face Posted: June 15, 2009 at 06:09 PM (#3220071)
Incidentally, is there any way that this guy doesn't get drafted high in the first round, absent a major arrest or crippling injury?

No. That's why it's so smart for him to get eligible for the draft as soon as humanly possible. He's guaranteed a multi million dollar signing bonus that would allow him to live comfortably for life if he avoids extravagent expenditures and invests it well. If he bombs as a player, then he gets a job like everybody else, except he'll have millions in the bank.

The more time between now and him entering the draft, the more time for him to suffer a freak injury or do something stupid like those crazy teenagers are known to do. Or both, probably at the same time.
   114. Tripon Posted: June 15, 2009 at 06:09 PM (#3220072)
As a person who took community college, its just high school part II. Except there's no dress code so the girls dress even skankier.

No they shouldn't, unless you are a non-lead character in Dazed and Confused, Friday Night Lights, or that Vanderbeek movie whose name escapes me. If you are, okay.

If you look under Evony chick/Biba Golic's left breast, you see the letters "BU." I am soliciting interpretations of this cryptic message.
   118. PreservedFish Posted: June 15, 2009 at 06:24 PM (#3220096)
Maybe it should be read "be you," which will suggest an association between the phallic sword (pointed at the same breast) and your own member

I think that the last two years of high school should be two great years for most people. (Any year in one's youth should be considered great.) But to think that those are the best and life's joys are in decline is a misinterpretation. Those two years will never be returned to Harper if things don't work out.

I am not saying he shouldn't sign. But to think that what he is giving up is not worthwhile may come back to haunt him if he flames out.

In regards to college, if he is as good as his hype I am sure he could get close to a full ride to a big time school. It seems that educational requirements in his (and his dads) viewpoint are holding him back at this time.

And a lot can change over the next 50 some weeks in regards to who goes first in the draft. Hahere are still a lot of players who haven't signed yet from this year and might be like Hochevar or Aaron Crow etc. Harper may end up being in the top 10-15 picks.

Wait, where are those years going? He's going to spend one of them at CC, and maybe one in the minors. If you're a great young ballplayer what better way is there to spend your youth than playing ball, and cashing a multi-million dollar bonus check?

Anyway, I wouldn't trade one year of my life now to relive all 4 years of high school.
   130. Zach Posted: June 15, 2009 at 08:04 PM (#3220174)

In this kid's case, it makes a lot of sense...

But the original point wasn't about reliving it, but choosing to forego it.

There is some downside to rushing into adulthood. Or, there should be.

Why? I like being an adult a lot more than I liked being a child.

Concur. Youth is highly overrated.

The whole idea of having a peer group (that you didn't select) whose opinions you care about is patently absurd.

If I were somehow forced back into high school, I'd probably be in juvie within a month for stabbing some ####### in the neck with a pencil or breaking a bottle over his head.
   136. Tripon Posted: June 15, 2009 at 08:38 PM (#3220219)
I don't know, if I was back in high school, the first thing I would have done is start dressing up in kilts, or some other man skirt and claim its part of my Asian heritage. Looking back, its true that trying to 'fit in' caused more headaches than it should have.

And this way, even if he tries to go back during his mid-life crisis, he won't be re-living it, because he never lived it in the first place.

I don't think so. I think society was better off before the invention of "adolescence". Especially the extended adolescence we see now, extending well into your 20's.

The idea that you can engage in adult behavior, but not be held accountable as an adult is destructive, IMHO.

The best part about skipping 2 years of high school will be the inevitable time when he realizes that he missed out on something important (hs diploma, prom, driver's ed) and has to go back to achieve it. Maybe John Cusack can play the lead in the movie. Or Jack Black.
