Bryce Harper plans to use Playstation as part of his thumb rehab

Harper has a legitimate medical reason for including Playstation as part of his rehab. Presumably, using his left thumb to aim firearms, operate motor vehicles, and shimmy past linebackers will strengthen it after a dormant period following the surgery.

If this is a thing, then I feel like the new Mario Kart has me in the best shape of my career.

I know that several NASCAR drivers have talked about using video games as a way of practicing certain tracks, as the accuracy is very high on these.

Not sure how legitimate it is to play a game to strengthen your muscles though.

Common sense suggests that videogames wouldn't help you develop raw strength in your thumb (as it's not difficult to actually press a button), but that it could indeed be quite helpful in conditioning reflexes and response times.

movement, flexibility.

Of course if Nick Johnson tried this, instead of rehabbing his thumb he'd develop Space Invaders tendonitis.

It had better be pretty big for option J rehab...

I suppose lots of reps could work... but it ruins the effect.

How good does thumb reaction time need to be for a center fielder?

I'm guessing Harper's days in CF are gone.

Despite Matty's declaration to the contrary, Harper has suggested that he just might catch a game or two. Heh.

You'd have a hard time moving it if you didn't. There are nine muscles in the thumb.

A few years back when I had surgery on my dislocated thumb, my doctor recommended playing video games as part of my physical therapy, so this isn't that unusual.

His effort is to maintain mobility and dexterity (or sinisterity since it's his left thumb). If you quit moving, you rust.
