BtBS: Jonathan Lucroy is the best catcher in baseball

This season, Lucroy has compiled a .325/.394/.491 batting line for a 146 wRC+ and 2.4 fWAR, easily the highest mark among catchers. Over the last calendar year, he’s managed a .306/.370/.480 line for a 135 wRC+ and 5.3 fWAR. That’s a half win more than Molina and almost two full wins more than Posey. [...]

Lucroy, Molina and Posey all rate very highly with regards to pitch-framing. Of the three, Lucroy is clearly the best.

Lucroy's main problem is that my brain keeps thinking "Matt LaPorta" when I hear his name so my brain refuses to store away the information that he is a good player.

He also has about the team-friendliest contract you're going to find in the sport. The Brewers signed him to a 5 yr./$10.26 million contract before the 2012 season, with a 2017 team option for $5.25M. So, 6 years for $15.5 million? Pretty awesome.

I see that Lucroy was a third-round draft pick. Has he come a long way as a pro, or did he slip initially in the draft for reasons unrelated to his potential? Of course, I guess "third round" does not mean "total sleeper."

How many times does it need to be said. War isn't accurate to the decimal. When you are talking .5 difference in war, you are effectively talking the same value.

Agree with the premise, that up to this point in time in the season, that Lucroy has been the best catcher in baseball. That doesn't mean he's the best catcher in baseball, it means in a relatively short time frame he has been the best.

I'm the same as snapper.
I can't mentally separate this amazing catcher with the one that made Frank Robinson cry.
