BTF Playoff Chats

Just a reminder that BTF’s IRC chat room is open for people who want to live chat during the playoffs.  Unlike the roundtable format chats, this is a free-for-all format.

My instructions on how to get there are weak and lame, so I’ll just reprint Dan Werr’s directions:

Chat on BTF exists and is free for all.

Every Tuesday and Friday evening at 8 PM Eastern Time/5 PM Pacific Time, there is a live chat in the #baseball_primer room on IRC on dalnet. The chat room is open throughout the baseball postseason, as the games are being played. Although these are the traditional chat times, Primates should feel welcome to congregate in the channel anytime they wish. HAL McRae is always looking for company.

2003 chat logs are available here.

Detailed instructions on joining IRC chats follow (all instructions for Wintel users using IE):

More after the break.

Go to www.mirc.com/get.html to get mIRC. Use your right mouse button to click on a link, and choose “save link target as”. When it pops up the window to choose where to save it to, click the folder with the arrow that is next to the drop-down box. (At the top, in the middle of the window.) Click that until the drop-down box says “Desktop”. Then click “save”, and wait for the download to finish.

When the download is done, you will have a file titled “mirc616” (newer versions will have different numbers) on your desktop. It will have the generic icon of a blank white “window” with a blue bar running across the top. Double click that. You will see a window titled “MIRC Installer”. Click the “next” button. Then choose “yes”. Then click the “install” button. The install will take about 20 seconds.

When the install is done, the mIRC folder will open up. (If it doesn’t, then go “My Computer”, then your hard drive (Most likely, C:), then click on the “Windows” folder, then the “Start Menu” folder, then the “mIRC” folder. There is an icon in that folder that has an MIRC (the C is a PacMan type image.) Double click that icon.

mIRC will open. Click “continue” in the box that opens. A new box will open. In the “Full Name” box, put in some name. In the “Email address” box, put an email address (this does not need to be a working email address). In the “Nickname” box, put in what you would like your nickname to be (do not choose something generic like “Bob”, as it will probably be taken by someone else on DALnet). In the “Alternate Nickname” box, put in your second choice else you would like to be called. A little down and to the right, there will be a small box that has a picture of a flower (or a sun, whatever you think it looks like). Click that. You will have two dropdown menus. In the “IRC Network” box, choose “DALnet”. The list is alphabetical. You don’t have to choose anything in the “IRC server” box, but as you use mIRC more and more, you’ll find that some servers work better for you. Go back down below the dropdown boxes, but this time, hit “connect to server”.

Wait a moment as all the text flies by, and you wil see a box that pops up titled “mirc Favorites”. In the text box where the cursor is, paste “#baseball_primer” (without the quotes) and hit enter (or click “Join”, which is right next to the text box).

You’re in! Including download time, you’ll be in within 5 minutes.

Mac users basic instructions for OSX

Leave Chat Server Port set to 6667

Leave Server Password blank

Click the “add” icon (the plus sign) below Join Rooms, then type “baseball_primer” without the quotes.

Connecting from a web browser

This might work.

Trivia

Chat (pronounced somewhat between “shat” and “shot”) is the Freedom (formerly French) word for cat.

Chat (or chart) is the Romanized spelling of a Thai word which can mean nation or team.

Wait, isn't the French word 'chat' pronounced something like "sha", unless there's a word starting with a vowel after it? It's been a while since grade 10 French, but that's how I remember it.

I need to get back in there - love that place - and miss it!

Are the chats archived anywhere for later reading?

And is there a chat that's accessible to non-computer-science majors?

Us dummies tend to use the game chatters.

I figured, but the LA-StL one was dead as Ed Delahanty.

God*damnit* Szym, we do this every year.

I wrote those instructions!

And no, the chats aren't archived anywhere, other than a couple of us log them. Trust me, we have years of agreement on this. And any one of us that decided to break the code has said way more stupid #### in there.

Thanks again to Dan Szym and Dan Werr for the great instructions.

Thanks Werr, these instructions are super helpful, you did a great job on them. (And thanks Szym for linking them)

I think the final consonant in French words like "chat" gets attracted to the consonant that follows. As in the song "j'entend le chat qui miaule," where the final /t/ sounds to me more like a glottal stop, anticipating the /k/ of "qui."

More to the point, "chat" is a delicious Indian salad.

Not only are Dan's instructions helpful, they're inexpensive. For a mere $100, I was on IRC and chatting in a few minutes. Thanks, Dan Werr!

Werr did such a good job setting this up, that I now feel bad about all those times I started a new lounge immediately after he posted in the old lounge.

Thanks to Dan Werr for writing such easy to follow instructions. He deserves our thanks,

I suspect this was put up because of my attempt to hijack your Twins ZIPS, Dan.

Dan Werr's instructions were so well-written that I was able to follow them, and I can't even read! He also cured me of cholera!
   15. Repoz Posted: October 08, 2009 at 09:09 PM (#3345323)
Is anybody on now?

Or am I talking to myself as usual?
   16. Jeff K. Posted: October 08, 2009 at 10:49 PM (#3345421)
Just to note, I only wrote the part up to and including You’re in! Including download time, you’ll be in within 5 minutes. I don't know who did the Mac instructions or the trivia.

And as for And is there a chat that's accessible to non-computer-science majors?, those instructions were written for Jack Vincennes, and he had no problem following them. That means you, unless you hire children to navigate to this website for you when you so choose, have the requisite skillset to also participate.

oh god, DALnet? Thanks, but no thanks...

IRC is pretty easy to use even for those who aren't computer science majors.

DALnet

Sounds delicious. I'll have mine with some chat, thanks.
