Bucco Blog: The Final Post

Woo-eee!...This could be the dirtiest thing to hit Pittsburgh…since the Elkem Metals Co. conspiracy!

With tears in my eyes I have to say Bucco Blog is now closed.

Over the last week I received some emails from someone purporting to be a member of the Pirates front office that I felt had a threatening tone.

I don’t know if the email addy actually belongs to a member of the Pirates front office, but I have been led to believe it does.

Taking everything this individual said as gospel, I owe him an apology because I mentioned he performed a task he said he does not do, although as a fan I honestly thought he did. To him I say I am genuinely sorry. If he hadn’t blocked all my email accounts, I would have told him myself.

But looking at the big picture, when it gets so bad that someone in the industry for over a quarter of a century even worries about a stinking fan blogging about his favorite team, something is very wrong, especially when the blogger is also the recipient of the individuals foul-mouthed anger.

It's appropriate to use the word conspiracy in a post which refers to Bucco Blog and Sunny/JJ.

Plenty of stuff left unexplained here.

Who emailed him? What did they take issue with? Was this a one-time donnybrook, or a longtime feud?

Weird.

I don't understand why he quit? He got some intemperate e-mails from someone purporting to be in the Pirates front office? He's not affiliated with them, right? If not, so what? He can blog until his fingers bleed? What am I missing?
   4. Rich Posted: July 04, 2007 at 08:32 PM (#2428990)
Suck it up, dude.
   5. Smyly Smile (Walewander) Posted: July 04, 2007 at 08:34 PM (#2428993)
Well, yeah, that is the biggest mystery. I can only assume, as the blog is owned by MLB, the mystery Pirates exec (lets call him Lave Diddlefield) set he was gonna shut it down if the guy didn't bow out.

Well, he's posting on MLB.com... and this post looks to be the entirety of his blog. You figure it out.
   7. McCoy Posted: July 04, 2007 at 08:38 PM (#2428996)
Or maybe he got tired writing about a team that hsits on him. How many people would be loyal customers of say a restaurant if they told you to go fcuk yourself?
   8. Gambling Rent Czar Posted: July 04, 2007 at 08:39 PM (#2428998)
wow,
I wonder what he wrote to get this kind of reaction.
I did notice that he Blogs on MLB Blogs, so maybe they have some sort of control over what he writes, or can take away his ability to use their services.

interesting.
   9. McCoy Posted: July 04, 2007 at 08:41 PM (#2428999)
For what its worth you can find his past blog entries or at least synapses of them on the web.

I'm still trying to figure out exactly what the benefit is of having an MLBlog. I think they should pay me $4.95 a month in return for reading the "featured" MLBlogs.

Google has a snippet of his post from yesterday:

So perhaps this is a Littlefield directive to try and get Nady better at bats because ... However, Suppan is 2-0 with a 3.80 ERA vs the Pirates in 2007, ...

but no cached version

I agree.
I never understood why people 'pay' to blog there.

They probably think it gives them a built-in readership. I have no idea if that is true.

Some recent Bucco Blog's posted here...with my emphuzizma!

Each MLB team has a different stand on bloggers. Where the Royals openly allow a lot more freedom, the Pirates refuse to acknowledge blogs even exist.

I guess that’s understandable since the team is owned by a couple of old school newspaper families. And hey, I do wear out the Pirates front office here at times, don’t I?

But lets face some facts.. while reporters might understand the Scopes Trial, some baseball reporters don’t understand the game of baseball.

Well, I wouldn't wish too hard and long for Sunny/JJ to reappear by gifting us with another website and, perhaps, another alias as well. There's no need to because there is a very good chance that we'll see him real soon.

#3,

No kidding. I can't see paying much attention to something that's so cryptic as to be nearly meaningless and that can't be verified in any way, shape or form.

Even if you take the "final post" at face value, it looks like he just offended somebody personally, not like the Pirates went after him.
   27. walt williams bobblehead Posted: July 04, 2007 at 11:12 PM (#2429086)
You can't take chances. The Pirate's front office does know how to make people suffer.
   28. WTM Posted: July 04, 2007 at 11:26 PM (#2429092)
Yeah, but they're too efficient to fool with one guy. They torment tens of thousands every day.

   32. susan mullen Posted: July 05, 2007 at 12:11 AM (#2429127)
On Oct. 5, 2006, I quoted Bucco Blog saying the following: "In any given year, one or two of the young Pirates fold up like a smashed can of corn praying that the organization will let them out of their contracts. Some, like Benson and Gerut, fight the front office ritually. Others like Bradley and Bullington walk away or play the 'I'm hurt' game.

Agents representing players refuse to even answer phone calls originating out of 115 Federal Street anymore. Most General Managers don't even bother to call the Pirates brass. Free agent's worth their salt will only consider Pittsburgh as a side show stop if they get one and one-half their true value in return." I believe his comments were also from 10/5/06. Sorry, didn't make a link, just copied and attributed his comments.

well you got a team where you KNOW that all the owners care about is getting their 30 mill a year. they don't NEED to get people actually going to games. so why should they even bother to try to win?

what ballplayer WANTS to go to a team like that if he got a chance to go somewheres else?

Texas at least tried to build a team. The Pirates just, er... plunder money from fans and other teams.

HOpefully Jake is in counseling right now.

Talk about a clear call for sympathy and understanding. A delusional post in my trained opinion. He just got tired of writing a blog, didn't want to say so and made up a story to show he hurt someone else's feelings so he needs to quit writing.

Why doesn't TJ Simers shut down his column?

Could the person he offended be the main source of the "inside" information that he has gotten? has he been banned from Bradenton? Now won't get the good reports on Hickory anymore.
   43. TerpNats Posted: July 05, 2007 at 01:27 PM (#2429442)
This is why I refuse to have anything to do with MLB-owned blogs or message boards. Especially considering there are so many other online places where you can voice your opinions.

This explanation sounds plausible.

Why doesn't TJ Simers shut down his column?
Simers is funny every so often. Sometimes, he's even intentionally funny (e.g. 'The everybody here hates you' interview with Jeff Kent). If Simers goes, then who would provide ballance to Plaske's humorless stuff?

And now there is a "Correcting the Misconception" piece up. It seems that no one forced him to do anything but that blogs are too powerful and must be destroyed for the sake of humanity.

Uh, yeah...

Hate to beat a dead horse, but why quit blogging when someone emails and said you have printed something that was wrong?

If it was that easy to get jake from blogging, he probably would have only lasted for one or two posts.

Can't wait to see what is posted tomorrow.

Biggest question is who is going to replace him?

McClatchy would seem to be a good candidate if he can pay the access charge.

Zuh? I don't even understand what he's trying to say.

I don't really know the inside story with Bucco Blog--it was a pretty good blog and was written by a guy who used the pseudonym of Jake for some reason--but let's clear up one misconception about MLBlogs. I've written there for well over a year; there has never been an effort to censor or delete anything I've written, and I've been plenty critical of several GMs and front office types along the way.

Some people have had their blogs taken away, but only, from what I understand, because they used incredibly foul language or wrote very inflammatory material that could be considered libelous. They are sensitive to the language issue, in particular, to the point that they use one of those cyber nannies that are used here at BTF.

It turned out to be a very short good-bye, as you can see if you click the link.

You just can't make this #### up.

Re: WTM, #56:

So, it seems that Sunny/JJ was responsible for Dejan's much acclaimed reporting of the team's finances! With all his deep financial knowledge of the team one might wonder why he thinks the Nuttings would try to get Brian Cashman to come to Pittsburgh....
