Bucs Ink Inge to Minor League Deal

I can’t believe Delmon got a job first!

The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed former Tiger Brandon Inge to a minor-league deal, MLB.com’s Tom Singer reported Tuesday night.

Inge, 35, a third baseman who spent 12 seasons in Detroit, was released by the Tigers last June and signed with the Oakland Athletics.

This is Greg Smith's move. He always brings in a few ex-Tigers in the spring.

Can Inge still catch at all? If so, he could make a decent bench part.

I don't think Inge can catch anymore. More to the point, he definitely won't. The idea was bandied about when the Tigers were trying to work out PT between him, Victor Martinez, and Avila a couple years ago and he said no.

Inge was a useful piece for the A's last year. Great glove and can poke the odd homer. Don't understand how he fits into the Pirates' plans with Alvarez and Jones. I'd have to think another team would be better able to put him to use.

Most likely, he's going to be the backup 3B, stashed at AAA in case of an injury to Alvarez. At this point, he'd likely have a similar role for any other team interested in him.

RJ in TO has it right. I see Inge getting significantly less playing time than Casey "the poor man's Wes Helms" McGehee got last year.

Try saying "Bucks ink Inge" ten times fast.
