1. Dewey, Steven Wright Wannabe and Soupuss Posted: September 30, 2010 at 03:24 PM (#3651954)The Cal Ripken jerky thread seems very timely for you, then.
I laughed at this.
Mark Buhrle: 147-110, 120 ERA+, 5.1 K/9
I thought of Glavine, since they're both soft throwing lefties. Glavine was a better strikeout pitcher, though (and high K pitchers tend to age better) while Buhrle has had better control. Still, I think Buhrle has at least several solid seasons left in him.
they didn't get there the same way though.
Glavine through age 24: 33-41, 89 ERA+, 4.5 K/9
Buehrle through age 24: 53-35, 124 ERA+, 5.1 K/9
Glavine 25-31: 120-58, 135 ERA+, 6.0 K/9
Buehrle 25-31: 94-75, 118 ERA+, 5.1 K/9
(PS: In good fun -- I love Buehrle, the guy is awesome, and he probably talks about this entirely because people keep bringing it up after his first offhand remark.)
I was wrong.
Barcelo might have been something, had he been able to stay healthy.
Buehrle's greatest trait might be his ability to take the ball every five days. He's really had a pretty remarkable run of durability.
I don't even remember Buehrle being a prospect like those guys were. Buehrle was just some guy. Now Jim Parque- he had a future. After the David Wells-Mike Sirotka fiasco, the Blue Jays were asking for Parque (it may have just been a columnist saying they should ask for him) but I didn't want to lose Parque, even for the 20 games a year David Wells was going to win for the Sox.
Don't forget that part of Glavine's 5.6 to 5.1 K/9 edge was due to pitching to pitchers.
