Buehrle still pondering retirement

Well…so much for Hawk’s prediction of 300 wins.

Retirement after the 2011 season remains a strong possibility for White Sox ace Mark Buehrle.

“But when next year gets here and knowing you’re going to walking away from the game, knowing if I have something left or not, I have to hope that first of all, I’m healthy,” Buehrle said Wednesday. “And second, someone wants to sign me. Obviously, it’s a plus if that is. And obviously it’s going to be harder to make a decision.

“As I sit here now, I’d love to just go home and be with the family and kids and go from there. But when next year gets here, at this time, it could be a tough decision, knowing this is all you’ve known for 15 years of your life and constantly having to be somewhere, to go somewhere. And all of a sudden you have nothing to do. It’s going to be a tough decision.”

I love Mark Buehrle, and I would be sad if he retired, but frankly, he talks about eventual retirement every year around this time. It's kind of tiresome.

The Cal Ripken jerky thread seems very timely for you, then.

He better keep his ugly goldbrickin' ass out of Chicago's quiet lakeside community.

I laughed at this.

Tom Glavine through his age 31 season: 153-99, 118 ERA+, 5.6 K/9
Mark Buhrle: 147-110, 120 ERA+, 5.1 K/9

I thought of Glavine, since they're both soft throwing lefties. Glavine was a better strikeout pitcher, though (and high K pitchers tend to age better) while Buhrle has had better control. Still, I think Buhrle has at least several solid seasons left in him.

Buhrle gets it and throws it. No BS. I love the way he pitches.

they didn't get there the same way though.
Glavine through age 24: 33-41, 89 ERA+, 4.5 K/9
Buehrle through age 24: 53-35, 124 ERA+, 5.1 K/9

Glavine 25-31: 120-58, 135 ERA+, 6.0 K/9
Buehrle 25-31: 94-75, 118 ERA+, 5.1 K/9

Note to self: don't seat Ball Point Pen Guy next to Joe Bivens at BBTF's retirement dinner for Mark Buehrle.

I feel quite confident that Buehrle will be back next year playing quarterback for the Vikings.

(PS: In good fun -- I love Buehrle, the guy is awesome, and he probably talks about this entirely because people keep bringing it up after his first offhand remark.)

I've said this before, but I never thought Buehrle would've had the career he's had. I had pegged Lorenzo Barcelo, Kip Wells, and Danny Wright to have the better careers.

I was wrong.

Barcelo might have been something, had he been able to stay healthy.

Buehrle's greatest trait might be his ability to take the ball every five days. He's really had a pretty remarkable run of durability.

I don't even remember Buehrle being a prospect like those guys were. Buehrle was just some guy. Now Jim Parque- he had a future. After the David Wells-Mike Sirotka fiasco, the Blue Jays were asking for Parque (it may have just been a columnist saying they should ask for him) but I didn't want to lose Parque, even for the 20 games a year David Wells was going to win for the Sox.

I remember thinking...I know Robinzon Diaz is probably not going to amount to anything, but why trade a 24 year old catcher for roster filler like Jose Bautista?

Glavine was a better strikeout pitcher

Don't forget that part of Glavine's 5.6 to 5.1 K/9 edge was due to pitching to pitchers.

I also remember the Sox having a number of good young pitchers around that time. Definitely recall Barcelo, Parque, Wright. Similar to 13, I never heard of Buehrle and he all of a sudden is one of the best starters in the league.

Barcelo isn't dead yet. . .
