Burnett and Chavez Are Burning Mad at ESPN

One of the most primary strategies is pfucking. One must know who to pfuck and in what suit to pfuck.

Buried in a Trib story by Rob Biertempfel….

  • Relievers Sean Burnett and Jesse Chavez are fuming over how they’ve been portrayed by ESPN and other media for supposedly setting up a candle and “shrine” to Nate McLouth.

“It’s ridiculous. Blown way out of proportion,” Burnett said. “I’m waiting for an apology.”

Chavez said the candle was set up two weeks before McLouth was traded as a running joke about the players’ daily card game of Pluck. As long as Chavez and Burnett kept winning, the candle stayed lit at their lockers.

“It had nothing to do with the trade,” Chavez said. “It’s a friendly thing we had going on, an inside joke.”

Neither player was disciplined by the team and the candle and Pluck scoreboard remain at their lockers.

Isn’t it hilarious how so many people in this town portrayed the Pirates clubhouse after the Nate McClouth trade?  I trust Burnett and Chavez get an apology, but I seriously doubt it will happen.

Upon seeing the headline I thought A.J. and Eric were incensed at being portrayed as injury-prone.

Yeah, I was trying to figure out what they have to do with each other. Was there a PED rumor I missed?

I wounder how many more Bucs could you add to the headline before anyone thought, "Hey they're all Pirates." Young, Sanchez, Diaz, Burnett and Chavez are Burning Mad at ESPN. Nope, still wouldn't have worked for me.

Did anyone think this headline was about the Bucs?
   5. Steve Balboni's Personal Trainer Posted: June 15, 2009 at 02:24 PM (#3219749)
Nope. Geez, I forgot Pittsburgh had a team!

I'm sure the brass over at ESPN are really concerned about this.

Who?

Is this like huffing? I thought the MLB minimum would take care of this problem and let guys move up to safer bad habits (like oxycontin or meth).

I assumed this was about the Pirates. What other team has a Burnett and a Chavez?

The real surprise is that ESPN spent long enough talking about the Pirates that they could become upset about the coverage.

Well, part of the confusion is that most people can't remember that the Pirates have both a Burnett and a Chavez.

Actually, most people can't remember that the Pirates have a Burnett or a Chavez

LOLOL! The Pirates are obscure! LOLOL!

But...it's true.

Maybe they should be trying to attract more inaccurate ESPN coverage rather than less, so people will know who they are.

It's not a matter of being obscure. It's a matter of these two players having the same last names as two more famous players who have also been in the news recently (Chavez with the injury and possible finish to his career, and Burnett being a disappointment with the Yankees). The Jays have a Chavez as well but, when I see that name in the headlines, I don't assume that it's the Jays' backup catcher who is under discussion.

Really, the headline should have included the team name.

"Really, the headline should have included the team name."

The story comes from a Pirates-centric blog, citing a report in a local Pittsburgh newspaper. I don't think it's all that ambiguous, within context.

Well, the headline is from a Pirates fan blog. My assumption is that Repoz intentionally left the headline ambiguous here, to see how many consecutive "Who are Burnett and Chavez?" comments would be generated.

Fair enough, but I have no idea what "rumbunter" is, or what area the Trib covers. For whatever reason, I thought that was a Cleveland paper.

Sorry to contribute to ruffling any Pirates' fans feathers here. I will say that if Burnett and Chavez's story is accurate, they have every right to be pretty pissed at ESPN.

I probably still would have thought it was about the situation off the coast of Somalia.

The headline should have included the word "yinzer."

And of course, if none of that stuff worked, there was the giant picture of the skull and crossbones in the top left corner.

That would require people to read more than the excerpt posted here.

rumbunter is a blog and no one interested in baseball watches ESPN anymore anyway.
   23. Crispix reaches boiling point with lackluster play Posted: June 15, 2009 at 04:11 PM (#3219943)
What do they watch instead of ESPN?
   24. altavista Posted: June 15, 2009 at 04:13 PM (#3219951)
"Really, the headline should have included the team name."

A minor league tag would have sufficed.

Derek Jeter, Paul O'Neill, Bernie Williams, I tip my hat to those guys. But who are Burnett and Chavez?
   26. Hurdle's Heroes (SuperBaes) Posted: June 15, 2009 at 04:46 PM (#3219987)

Yeah; they've got uniforms and everything!
   27. Daunte Vicknabbit! Posted: June 15, 2009 at 06:02 PM (#3220055)
I have multiple Sean Burnett autographs and rookie cards, and talked baseball with him when I was twelve years old. I still thought this was about some hybrid article encompassing AJ and Eric. Absolute proof that the Pirates may as well not exist. Go Penguins?
   28. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: June 15, 2009 at 06:03 PM (#3220057)
Carol Burnett and Hugo Chavez would make a pretty hilarious comedy duo - but why are they mad at ESPN?
   29. Drew (Primakov, Gungho Iguanas) Posted: June 15, 2009 at 08:01 PM (#3220171)
If ESPN didn't show baseball, I'd be done watching them. I already have to mute the broadcasts as it is.

I'm going to attempt to avoid their website, because I go there in knee-jerk fashion too often. Visiting their site perpetuates it.

Sean Burnett is back in the majors? It's impressive in its way ... the man now has a 91/77 career K/BB ratio.

"What's "Pluck"?"

Like "grit", only for 19th-century schoolgirls instead of ballplayers.

Career 117/110 at AAA, too. Proof positive that you need at least a little bit of stuff to strike people out.

He's welcome to come back here to AA. We could use him. Our bullpen ERA is like 8.30.
