By passing on Derby, A-Rod comes up very small

A Home Run Derby in Yankee Stadium with no Yankees.

What a crime.

But this is a crime with an official No. 1 suspect: a fellow named Alex Rodriguez.

Some day, A-Rod wants people to watch him walk down the street and say, “There goes the real home run king.” Well, we hate to break it to him, but real home run kings think the Home Run Derby is part of their job description, not somebody else’s problem.

C’mon, Stark, you’re better than this. After reading this article, A-Rod doesn’t come out looking small, you do.

Let's go to an alternate universe where ARod DOES participate in the HR derby, and we find out that he ended up injuring himself (over-swinging?) or messed up his timing so much that he has a terrible slump for the first 3 weeks after the ASG.

What happens? The NY media jumped all over it and pointed out how he was "selfish" by trying to "steal the spotlight" during the ASG by "showing off" during the HR derby, and how this selfishness has now hurt the Yankees chances to catch TB/BOS.

Can someone tell me how Stark got a good reputation? Since he's been at ESPN, he's been all about middle-of-the-road conventional wisdom analysis and ridiculously uninteresting trivia.

I still wonder why ARod was so intent on returning to the Yankees.

A Rod is a chump. Josh Hamilton is more popular in Yankee Stadium than A Rod ever was. A Rod is about as vanilla as Tim Duncan. Boring.

I was in Philly in the mid-90s, and Stark was very refreshing in the Daily News - a much better alternative to Conlin. Stark actually wrote more sabermetrically, I like him. Then he got mainstream.
