Byung Ho Park is a Red Wing, Not a Twin (at Least For Now) | FanGraphs Baseball

The Twins wanted 8 relievers. Eight. 8. Relievers. One catcher. Two back up position players.

8 relievers is a pretty typical roster these days, nothing new there. The Cubs carried 8 relievers (and often 3 Cs) most of the year in 2016. The average team last year threw 530 relief innings, a 30-40 inning increase over where they were from (give or take) 2008-14. That was an average of 2258 BF. At 8 reliever slots, that would be 282 BF per slot. As a guide, Andrew Miller faced 275 batters; the slightly less awesome Bryan Shaw faced 275; Otero 269; Allen 264. The Indians only needed 509 relief IP; the Cubs only 471.

Last year the Twins needed (well, used) 568 relief innings. You try covering that with 7 relief slots in today's game.

As long as some of your mediocre relievers have options, you can shuttle the marginal arms to the minors if/when they're overworked. Each is subjected to a minimum 10 day optional assignment (unless there's an injury) so you may need 2 or 3 depending on how frequently you need a long/mopup reliever.

Part of the problem is that very few teams carry a traditional long/mopup reliever anymore, for reasons I don't exactly understand. Instead, the entire bullpen is made up of guys who can't/don't pitch more than an inning at a time. But even a team with mediocre starting pitching like the Twins could make do with 7 relievers provided that they had a few AAAA guys with options who could serve in this type of role to combine in pitching 40-50 innings each.
