Beautiful evening for baseball in Cincinnati. There are maybe 5000 people at Great American.

Perfect. You can relax and enjoy the game without any hassle at all, there are no lines at the concession stands, you can sit wherever you want, there is no traffic getting there, and no parking issues at all. They should market it that way :-) If Yankee Stadium was like that I would go twice as much as I do. Maybe more.

Of course, we are pushing the notion of actually winning games aside, but nothing is perfect.

It has been 1.5 innings and the Reds are not losing yet. better than I could have hoped for.

Corey Seager out for the year with TJ surgery. Terrible news for him, and bad news for Dodgers.

Beautiful evening for baseball in Cincinnati.

Now that Mr. Votto is having a down year, it's time to get rid of this aging player. We at the Boston Red Sox would like to offer not 1, but 2, 1B and some extra stuff for Mr. Votto.
1 of the players in question is actually having a really good year and his contract expires at the end of the year thereby relieving Cincy of any long term financial commitments.
This would seem to a bargain from Cincinnati's perspective!

Go Yankees !

Votto with the clutch hbp to start the inning.

Schebler with a double. Votto is really, really slow.

But then eye YOO hen e o drives them both in. I am at a Reds game and they have a lead!

Eddie Matz, ESPN Senior Writer

With another intentional pass (his league-leading seventh), Bryce Harper is now on pace for 207 walks. That would the second highest total ever, behind Barry Bonds (232 in '04).

Constantly walking Harper may not work as well if Daniel Murphy & Anthony Rendon return to the lineup.

Contreras just picked off an anonymous Rockie on 2b in a 2 on, no out, pitcher up to bunt situation.

And then the Cubs #### up the bunt put out.

Baseball can be unpredictable, but 2018 Sonny Gray against the best team in baseball is about as predictable as it gets.

Reds scoreboard stumper: since 1970, 5 players have hit at least 300 HR and hit over. 300 while playing their whole career with the same team. Name them

Um, only 2 Reds have hit 300 HR with the team, and neither hit .300

edit: Frank Robinson did 300 .300, but not since 1970.

I'm a Yankees fan, but the Astros are the Yankees with a better pitching staff.

Per Fangraphs, at this point the Astros project all of two wins better than the Yankees and Red Sox. Astros 100 W, Yankees and Sox both 98.

No one else over 93.

Stumper answer is Brett, Helton, Edgar, Chipper.... And Braun. I don't think Braun is going to maintain the 0.300 average

Butler. Since last week.

The 5 players are Brett, Chipper, Martinez, Helton, and Braun. 4 players who started their careers as 3B.

Nice work from Farrell there.

I predict the Yankees WILL hit a fair ball beyond the infield tonight. It just hasn't happened yet in 5 innings against Charlie Morton in Houston.
   41. Walt Davis Posted: April 30, 2018 at 09:26 PM (#5663271)
But why is Farrell pitching?

4 players who started their careers as 3B.

Odd ... and their career starts at 3B:

Chipper 1968
Brett 1673
Edgar 532
Braun 112 (until he signs with the Braves at age 37 when they'll try to move him back there :-)

Would make a good sporcle -- all BA>=300, HR>=300. There are 28 with 3 active (name the other two). There may be only one or two who folks here wouldn't get.

EDIT: OK, probably a couple more that are kinda tough to get ... at least there's one "obvious" one it would have taken me a while to guess that he made it to 300 HR.

Dang, what a play by Bryant.
   47. Meatwad Posted: April 30, 2018 at 09:35 PM (#5663283)
Well the defense got a little bit better that inning but still another error. Then again im not sure russell gets the out if he fields it cleanly.
   48. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 30, 2018 at 09:37 PM (#5663285)
But why is Farrell pitching?

It's still April? Sure sounded like Joe liked him in ST but they didnt want to lose butler who was out of options. He's got nice enough stuff.
   49. Don August(us) Cesar Geronimo Berroa Posted: April 30, 2018 at 09:37 PM (#5663286)
Miggy for sure. Does Albert still have a ba over. 300? Votto should join that group next year.
   50. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 30, 2018 at 09:37 PM (#5663288)
That wasn't an error on Russell. Almost took his head off.

   56. Misirlou doesn't live in the restaurant Posted: April 30, 2018 at 09:47 PM (#5663301)
All the players I listed are correct except for Wilson and Kaline (batted .297). Mize is correct. That leaves 5 players, including 1 active. A couple I should have gotten. 1 I never would have.

I anyone else noticing that MLB TV doing something really annoying? If I switch the tab during a commercial, the commercials never end. After about 5 minutes "I think Hey, what the hell?" I refresh the feed and we are 2-3 batters into the next inning.
   65. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 30, 2018 at 10:02 PM (#5663324)
I have no problem with them babying morrow. He'd pitched 3 of the last 4.

Prior to this homestead, the Cubs had not won a game in which they scored fewer than 8 runs. They now have a 5 game win streak in which they have scored 1, 3, 3, 2, 3.

Red Sox cruising, though E-Rod got tagged for 5 in 4IP, not a good outing.
Bats are alive and well though.

NY fans are awfully quiet today...

And yes, taking a curtain call on the road is bush league(been meaning to comment on that for days). I don't care how much of the crowd is supporting the visiting team, that's just not on. Is there any other instance of this actually happening?

em]Morrow has pitched in 11 of 26 games.

I don't see an issue with trying to avoid him going 4 times in 5 days this early. They also didn't have Edwards available and it's the same thing.

Morrow has a history, threw less than 50 innings last year in the regular season, then threw damn near every day in the playoffs and got work down. Caution and perspective.

Hader struck out 8 guys tonight...in two and two thirds innings. So, you know, that's practically impossible. Even against the Reds.

It's almost impressive how bad Ian Desmond has been. He led off and played first base today, and he's at .178/.229/.337. Against righties, he's 6 for 59 with a 19:1 K/W ratio. And he's got three and a half years left on his contract.

Wait, didn't we see all this is the ALCS last year?

It's like Groundhog Day with variable dates. Morton pitched one hell of a game, even if the ump was expanding the strike zone for him (and Gray) all night.

As I wrote in that other thread, this is the week for the Red Sox to expand their lead. They won't get many more favorable schedules and pitching matchups than they're getting between tonight and Sunday.

IMO the saddest thing about the Astros is that Lisa can't bring herself to enjoy them, simply because of the DH league they play in.

RUle Q:

What we just saw in the SF game

runner on 1B, ball to second baseman...he chases the runner on first back some, throws to first. The batter is safe and the 1B throws to second base where the runner is barely tagged out. But the force is still on isnt it? Even though the runner at 1B is safe the force is still on at second...isnt it? Or is it?
   87. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 01, 2018 at 12:15 AM (#5663412)
Maybe I'm misunderstanding the situation, but if the batter is safe at first, how could the force possibly not be on at second?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the situation, but if the batter is safe at first, how could the force possibly not be on at second?

Because the runner still has to go to second? If the batter is OUT, then yes the runner who is hung up between first and second cannot be forced out. So I'm asking is the force still on at second base for the runner who started from first base after the batter is safe at first? Or must the runner be tagged.

I ask because in the situation that just happened in the Giants game...the fielder swipe tagged the runner from first.
   90. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 01, 2018 at 12:26 AM (#5663417)
Right, if the batter is out, of course the force is no longer on, but if he's safe, of course the runner has to go to second. Where else is he going to go? So the force would still be on, definitionally, no? The Giants' fielder probably tagged the runner out of force of habit, or an attempt to deke him (and the ump) by the runner.
   91. Dale Sams Posted: May 01, 2018 at 12:30 AM (#5663419)
Thank you...force of habit was my thought too.
   92. Dale Sams Posted: May 01, 2018 at 12:42 AM (#5663420)
I guess without that (force at 2B) we could see something insane like the runner going back to first, while the batter is in some kind of limbo cause he doesnt have to return to 1B until he either chooses to or the pitcher is set...or something...
   93. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 01, 2018 at 12:43 AM (#5663421)

Or the runner is forced to wander between first and second base for 40 years.

Resulting in a pace of play only marginally slower than the average Yankees-Red Sox game.
