Can’t Stop the Bleeding: Beau Brummell Vs. The Hawk

Was there anything cooler than Ken Harrelson’s off-kilter Teddy Boy Ballgame look?

In the middle of today’s White Sox/Royals Cactus League thriller, KCSP’s Steve Stewart noted Ken Harrelson’s attendance and reminded listeners that back in the day, the Hawk was “something of a radical” with his “Beatle haircut”.

“Ken was one of the first major leaguers to sport a Nehru jacket,” declared Stewart.  “I’ll bet that thing is buried in a trunk somewhere in his house.”

“It oughta be in a trunk deep under the sea”, grumbled Denny Matthews. I guess Denny’s not a big Beatles fan.

“Harrelson wasn’t exactly the Beau Brummel type,” explained Stewart, to which Matthews replied, “Beau Brummel….would’ve had him shot.”

OK, I'll ask it:

Who's Beau Brummel?

Actually, I think Beau Brummel would've approved of Harrelson's avant style decisions.

though he usually doesn't get credit for it, Hawk was one of the first unabashed self-promotors--but I always got the NIMpression that his tongue was firmly planted in his cheek

he published this book in 1969 to capitalize on his big 1968 Bosox season, but by the time it came out, he had already been traded to Cleveland

it was actually quite an amusing read
