Capitol Punishment: Needham: Tonight’s the Night

The most prominent Nats blog ends its run. It was one of the first (established Nov. 2004), and it ran the longest. Those of us who read Nats blogs are sad. But it got me to thinking: what’s the longest-running blog for your team, and how long has it been active?

This is a disaster. WTF are we going to do without a good Nats blog now? We're a fledging franchise, we need this sort of devoted coverage!

Mac Thomason started Braves Journal in 1998. My guess is that since he didn't kill himself during the Danny Kolb season, nothing will ever stop him.

i started my blog in 6/04. seems like yesterday and seems like a lifetime
but both orange whoopass and astros daily were there for years before me
all the other ones i know about before i started are long gone

If this dead horse keeps getting whipped, people are going to start defending him... and that is going to lead to more threads and words on the matter. Unless that is what you want you should refrain.

I started a White Sox blog in 1906. I was a front-runner. I only update it every couple of decades.

Twins Geek has been around since 2001 in various forms.

For a minute there I was worried that Jim Bowden had convinced Needham to surrender his virginity.

I know I was always a sucker for that old come-on, "Spread your wings and let me come inside."

I read that blog. It's too bad that Y2K erased all archives and memory of pre-1990's web sites.

And Jesus's second coming, of course, erased all of the videotapes.

Capitol Punishment was an excellent blog. Chris just had a way of talking about the day to day workings of a team without it being boring, and really without a lot of bells and whistles. It was the go to spot for a lot of Nats' fans and it will be sorely missed.

I know we pick on him here, but even Melendez doesn't have that kind of power to annoy.

Shoulda been you, Deadspin.

Congrats to Cap P for an outstanding run! hip-hip-hooray!

Two of us have been running Birds in the Belfry since just prior to the 2001 season (we're not the oldest/biggest O's webpage - that honor belongs to the more mainstream Orioles Hangout, where we wrote before spinning off.) It is very hard to write consistently...we don't 'blog', we do the traditional 'columns' (probably because we were doing it before 'blogging'), and it's hard when you're writing about a franchise going nowhere like the O's were throughout the decade. I've thought about packing it in a couple of times, but I'm glad we've held on.

The friends (and occasional enemies) you make, the fun, the back-and-forth that occasionally results in a more open mind...pretty much make it all worthwhile.

But...for those of you are regular readers of any blogger...do them a favor every rare while and tell them how much you enjoy and appreciate what they do. It makes all the difference.

No doubt, using fully RFC 1149- and RFC 2549-compliant transmission.

The oldest active Dodgers blog is probably Dodger Blues, followed by Dodger Thoughts. There are other sites out there but none of them really qualify (unless you count Sarah Diane Morris' frankly awful and infrequently updated Dodger Place).

For the Angels, Mat Gleason's old personal blog was mostly dedicated to the Angels, dating back to October, 2003, so from that perspective, the current Sports Nation blog Halos Heaven can probably be considered to be an ongoing event. Purgatory Online was probably the oldest Angels blog at the time Sean stopped writing in 2005. I can't tell from his page (Blogger stopped supporting separate archive pages a while back), but IIRC he started in 2001-2002.

I'm a Jays fan and usually stick to regular visits to Battersbox.ca, so I'm not sure if another jays blog has it beat, but it was started in 2001. Sounds like it would have to at least be in the running for one of the first and longest for the jays.
   18. Justin 'The Cespedobear' T Posted: May 08, 2008 at 03:06 AM (#2773234)
Is it really necessary to criticize Sarah Morris's blog as frankly awful? Even if it doesn't add anything to our knowledge of the game and/or team? I think she gets a pass.
   19. Repoz Posted: May 08, 2008 at 03:16 AM (#2773247)
Sad to see it go...and I feel bad as I should have linked Needham's stuff over here a helluva lot more than I did.
   20. Hello Rusty Kuntz, Goodbye Rusty Cars Posted: May 08, 2008 at 03:18 AM (#2773250)
Yeah, I don't understand the Sarah Morris dislike. Also, it's been updated at least four times a week since the season started.

It might be condescending to do otherwise, depending on the offense.
