Cardano: John Sterling Has No Clue Who Is In Right Field

Get free tap dancing lessons from Baggypants Moskowitz! (and while you’re at it…get the friggin’ hook)

Those of you who have heard Sterling call outs, home runs and vice versa, know what I’m talking about when I say that he often makes mistakes on the broadcasts. If you didn’t get a chance to hear John Sterling’s call of the Mets vs. Yankees Interleague game on Sunday you are in for a treat.

I’m not certain that I’ve ever heard a broadcaster not know who the participants playing in the game were after already announcing the game for a half hour. Listen as in the second inning of Sunday’s game, John Sterling has no clue who the player is in right field that catches the fly ball. He initially call the put out made by Jason Bay, then Carlos Beltran, and then comes the uncomfortable period of silence and correction after he’s told that Beltran is the DH and Fernando Martinez was the one who caught the ball.

The funniest part is, after he screws up, he tells the audience that he has not yet looked at the score card. It was the second inning of a game that he was announcing!

Me add.

And, I bet they'll be tripping over themselves to resign him when his contract ends this season.

I want to believe that this recent outburst of articles pointing out how terrible Sterling has to do with his contract coming to an end soon. I really, really want to believe the writers can't stand his schtick either, and are trying really hard to get it out there that he sucks at his job, and whoever gets the Yankees radio contract are better off spending their money on substance.

Of all Sterling's faults, this is not one that comes up that often. He seems to generally know who is on the field.

It's just part of his charm!

He seems to generally know who is on the field.

High praise, indeed.

It's just part of his charm!
Phil Rizzuto not knowing who was in right field was part of his charm, like everyone's slightly daffy but well-meaning uncle. The charmless Sterling comes off as a confused, disheveled old man sitting on a stoop (of a residence he doesn't own), guzzling Thunderbird from a bottle he'd just pulled out of his coat pocket.
