Cardinals rethink roster protection for offseason | St. Louis Cardinals | stltoday.com

“I think what you have to realize is there is always going to be a team or two that can take the approach to a complete rebuild, or take a chance,” Mozeliak said. “When you go back five, six, seven years ago that wasn’t happening where people are taking four or five Rule 5 players. Now people are being more aggressive in how they think about talent collection.”

Has anybody tracked whether there's more rule 5 activity and especially more rule 5 players being retained? I recall SD had 3 on the ML roster at some point this season. Possibly it does make more sense -- you're essentially buying a "prospect" for the cost of a min salary ... and a roster spot of course but if you're tanking, that's not of much value or if it's a pitcher, it's easy to limit them to low-leverage relief plus a couple of trips to the DL.

Why are they crying about Luis Perdomo? He's a bad pitcher on a bad team. He's 24. He wasn't very good in the minors, in which he hadn't even been promoted to even AA before.

As for Cordoba? He is clearly being rushed by the Padres. Sometimes desperate teams like the Padres make desperate measures. Like Gould is saying, they are clearly stashing him. Will it likely ruin his development? Yeah, I'd say likely. He'd never played above Rookie League. I'll offer a tale of a much better player whose career was completely ruined by such tactics: Travis Snider

If the Cardinals start freaking out about those two guys, Mozeliak is going to start to go backwards. I love how Gould has this article a week after Jeff Gordon is complaining that the Cardinals just have too many good players. Is it possible Cards had too much job competition? Newsflash: when you have an abundance of talent that is major league ready, it means you might lose some of those same players.
