Cardinals To Acquire Justin Masterson

Robbin’ Masters?

The Indians and Cardinals have agreed to a deal that will send Justin Masterson to St. Louis, Peter Gammons reports (on Twitter). Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that top outfield prospect James Ramsey is headed to Cleveland (Twitter link).

Masterson, 29… [has] battled a knee issue for most of this season, which could very likely have contributed to his 5.51 ERA and bloated walk rate (5.1 BB/9).

Masterson’s fastball velocity has declined significantly this season, falling from an average of 91.6 mph in 2013 to 89.1 in 2014. However, Masterson’s now former pitching coach Mickey Callaway said earlier in the month that he felt Masterson’s knee injury had altered his mechanics, which could explain the dip in velocity as well as the increase in walks.

Huh. The Cards just want a warm body? Masterson's having a pretty rough year.

Masterson seems like a Dave Duncan special.

Seems like such a Cardinals move. He'll be awesome down the stretch, probably sign a reasonable extension, and be a very good pitcher through his prime.

FWIW, his FIP is only 4.08. His walk rate has spiked but he seems like a reasonable bet to return to form soon.

Maybe, although a FIP of 4.08 isn't great either, and he's lost a ton off his fastball this year. But you're right, he does seem like the kind of guy who could magically rediscover his form with St Louis.

Yep.

So does this mean that they're no longer interested in Lester?

Too bad that Duncan now works for the D-Backs.

Masterson is a poor mans Bret Saberhagen.

2014 68 era+
2013 110 era+
2012 79 era+
2011 122 era+
2010 84 era+.

Also he shows the dominance of k/9 in this era...he's 31st among active pitchers in k/9 while 65th overall.

That was my impression, without having actually looked it up--that he alternates goodness-to-excellence with suckitude in seemingly random patterns. (I suppose every other year isn't random. You catch my drift.)

Ramsey looks pretty useful. Seems like a pretty good get for a guy with a bum knee and declining velocity. If it weren't the Cardinals it would be a pretty big WTF.

He was pretty far down the depth chart and is at an age where if he's going to have any career he needs to make the show in a season or two. Piscotty, Taveras and Grichuk are all ahead of him right now and the major league roster wasting a spot on Bourjos made it unlikely he even would have a chance at making the team next season.

Acta on BT made a good point, that Masterson's L/R splits are severe and they play Milwaukee, which is all righties, 10 times the rest of the year, and McCutchen is the hitter for Pittsburgh. So we could see Masterson putting up good numbers and winning about 3 important division games down the stretch, making the Cards look like geniuses. Law seemed to not think very highly of Ramsey.

And #3 also makes a very good point.
