Cardinals unveil latest Ballpark Village plan

Looks like a cool project that will leave for Anaheim in ten years.

The Cardinals unveiled their latest plan for Ballpark Village on Monday. It is smaller than the last one, but one that the Cardinals say is more likely to succeed.

The baseball team and its development partners showed off a 100,000-square foot retail and entertainment complex to be built north of Busch Stadium, anchored by a team Hall of Fame and big outdoor event space. On the rest of the 10-acre site, they will lay the groundwork for future development.
It’s decidedly less ambitious than earlier visions of the project, which has been on the drawing board for more than a decade with no real progress — a sore spot for both the Cardinals and the city.

But unlike those efforts, stressed Cardinals president Bill DeWitt III, this version is fully-financed, largely pre-leased, and attainable despite the weak economy.

“I’m excited about this,” he said. “I think our package is coming together at the right time.”

I'm sure there will be a lot of public cash to spend after the Rams leave for LA.

Well put.

I just don't buy any redevelopment plan in urban areas where there is no significant housing component, and I don't buy that people will live in an area with a terrible school district. This is not going to be any more successful than the St Louis Center.

I agree with your first statement, but aren't all urban school districts pretty terrible? And don't they yet have a ton of people living in the city? And not just poor people either. We have more childless young people than ever before, and there is a market for them too.

From the outside looking at St. Louis, I didn't realize there was any area within 20 miles of downtown that the public schools had anything to do with their housing choice.

If they build any stores that cater to urban car thieves, they should make a fortune.
