Carlos Zambrano launches the most unlikely comeback

Carlos Zambrano, a longtime starter primarily with the Cubs who hasn’t appeared in a game since 2012, is edging his way back to the game, transitioning into a reliever and beginning a comeback with the independent Chicago Dogs.

Quite a long shot comeback for sure, but I would be excited if he could somehow make his way back to the bigs.

Hmmmm.... home opener May 17.... Just might head out to Rosemont... see the would-be Wrigley NW.... maybe throw some cards at the Casino.

With no Chipper Jones to throw at (for the audacity of getting a hit in his previous at-bat), how will Carlos find meaning in his profession?

He managed to find meaning after beating up Michael Barrett....

I looked up the "Chicago Dogs".

- They play in the American Association, giving Chicagoland now 5 different unaffiliated independent minor league teams, two in the AA and three in the Frontier League. This is probably the closest one to actual Chicago (I'm not sure where Crestwood is).
- Their manager is Butch Hobson
- They play at 6,300-seat Impact Field, located in Rosemont near O'Hare (like the AHL hockey arena) and visible from I-294 which is why "Impact" paid so much money for the sponsorship. Somebody paid $63 million to build this field which is used only by the Chicago Dogs.

Obviously, this event left quite the scar on you, but he did pitch against other teams besides the Braves.

Throwing at Sandy Hook truthers is a net good. Admittedly, that probably wasn't the reason Zambrano threw at him (since it hadn't happened yet), but still.

Rosemont has for years been a mobbed-up (ALLEGEDLY) gambling and entertainment community near O'Hare. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that at least some of that $63 million was for laundry.

Since I'm bored at work, I checked on the locations of the five teams. By driving distance, the Chicago Dogs in Rosemont are the closest team to Wrigley. The Windy City ThunderBolts in Crestwood are the closest to Comiskey.

Well, it was entirely reasonable at the time for Zambrano to assume that (1) there would be another horrific mass school shooting in America in the fairly near future, and (2) Chipper Jones would probably think stupid things about it.

Big Z likes throwing things - baseballs, punches - at people. It doesn't require much more analysis than that.

How will this affect his Hall of Fame chances?

Well, if he makes it back to the bigs, he'll get another crack at trying to improve on the 0 votes he got last year.

You laugh, but he had 37+ WAR through his age 29 season. If he hadn't fallen off a cliff and been out of the majors by 31, it's not hard to imagine him ending up in that 60-65 WAR no man's land for pitchers with guys like Tommy John, Andy Pettitte, and David Cone.

If anybody is going to be the next Bartolo Colon, it's Z.

Jose Rijo got one HOF vote in the 2001 election but didn't get any when he returned to the ballot in 2008.
