Carlton Fisk: Game has been taken away from pitchers, catchers

Fisk: Kiss This Game Goodbye.

“In a lot of ways, the game has been taken away from pitchers and catchers, and even from a young age,’’ he said. “Pitches are called from the dugout, even in high school. When a game is on the line, there’s no reservoir of experience. And the game has been taken away from the teams by some of the rules that have been put in. You have umpires who don’t follow pitchers around, and as a result, they don’t have a handle on the emotional highway of the game. You have to have a feel for that part of the game.’’

Fisk will be among the former Sox players who will join current players Monday for the team’s annual celebrity bowling event to benefit pediatric-cancer research and treatment programs at Children’s Memorial Hospital and the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital.

“It’s always fun because you get away from the game with your family and mingle with the fans and kind of get feedback from them,’’ he said. “It’s almost like a date night with my wife. It’s for a great cause — and it gets kind of competitive, too.’’

I don't have any idea what Fisk means by this.

I am also baffled by it, but maybe it means they don't understand when an HBP is and is not intentional?

Was there ever a time when umpires followed pitchers around? Cause that would be really creepy.

My read is that in the olden days, the umpires would see the pitchers more often and know when they "deserved" to drill a guy.

Back in my day there was much inappropriate touching between catcher and umpire. It didn't feel so good but it made the strike zone wider and that's called taking one for the team, folks! Kids today don't understand this with their flibbity flee and their flibbity floo.

Here's my question: wasnt the one who called for the change up to Perez in the world series? The ball that was hit deep into LF stands. Bill Lee always said that was stupid, was it?

Bill Lee is not fond of catchers period. Mentioning Fisk or catchers as game-callers in general is a good way to set him off on a rant (although I gather that's not difficult).

All the way on to Lansdowne Street, actually. My single favorite moment in a lifetime of watching sports.

but what was Fisk's reputation as a game caller? Good?

Bill James held in the past that if Fisk's abiltity to call a game and handle a pitcher could be quanified he rank even higher than he already does. Most young talented catchers get good at all that with expereience, but Fisk apparently was good at it when he was a rookie even.
