Casey Blake tells the Register that he’s retiring

Blake: Relief itching.

Major League Baseball veteran Casey Blake said today that he officially has decided to retire, despite starting spring training with the Colorado Rockies and fielding recent interest from the Texas Rangers.

Blake told the Des Moines Register that he has been leaning toward retiring, but stopped short of a decision until now.

“My wife (Abbie) has been telling people I’m retired, but I’ve kind of been giving her a look,” said Blake, 38, who has played parts of 13 seasons in the majors with five teams before attempting to make the roster this season with Colorado.

“But I think I knew in my heart that I am (retiring), but I just haven’t announced it.”

...“My career has to end at some point,” Blake told the Register today. “If I was going to play, it would probably only be one more year anyway.

“I just decided to shut it down. And I’m OK with the decision.”

Over 1000 hits, 150 HR, all despite not really playing much MLB until age 29. Not too shabby.

Praise Jesus, there are few decent players I have loathed more than Casey Blake,

2005
23 HR
18 Solo HR
Bases empty: .278/.351/.535
Men On: .192/.250/.308

I am sure you are a wonderful person, but I hate Casey Blake and I hate his beard. And I hate Eric Wedge and his WSU nepotism.

Edit: But I love Carlos Santana!

The 2007 Indians were a fun team. I had forgotten they had Josh Barfield, Trot Nixon, Kenny Lofton...I was about to ask, who the hell is Roberto Hernandez and how did he manage to throw 215 innings with a 148 ERA+ without me ever having heard of him. But then I figured it out after several minutes of deep concentration.

EDIT: in retrospect I guess the question should be "how did he throw 215 innings with a 148 ERA+?" full-stop.

Don't forget 15-8 Paul Byrd, Terrible Cliff Lee, baffling first round pick Jeremy Sowers, Nasty Tom Mastny.

I will always remember Tom Mastny for ruining a playoff game at Fenway for my wife. I believe that was the game that Manny set the post season HR record.

During the 2008 SABR-vention Indian game...I sat with the late Greg Spira and a retired old-timey scout who told us Casey Blake was by far the best player on the Indians. We argued Sizemore/Peralta...but he wouldn't budge because his stopwatch had Blake with the best hang time on foul/fly balls.

Casey Blake was traded a month later.

I feel good for guys like Casey Blake. At 28 or 29 he must have been going through some serious soul searching, then ten years later he's made almost $40m in salary.

just for the hell of it, since this window is open -- Josh Hamilton went 5 for 5 today, with 4 two-run homers, and a double.

The 2007 Indians also had the real Roberto Hernandez on their team. The one in disguise pitched a lot better.
