CBS: Dobrow: Save This Franchise: Pirates still mired in suckiness

Move over Wheeler & Woolsey…Lobrow Dobrow is back!

Short-term outlook: Sucky. In the seasons since 1992, the Pirates have won 75, 53, 58, 73, 79, 69, 78, 69, 62, 72, 75, 72, 67, 67, 68 and 67 games. They have sucked on the field and off. They have sucked at home and on the road. Objectively, they have sucked. Subjectively, they have sucked. Statheads think they suck. Joe Morgan thinks they suck. If there is anything within or without the game of baseball that is beyond dispute, it is that the Pittsburgh Pirates suck.

1. Trade Nate McLouth now: Quick! Go! Stop reading this article and trade him before the few people who don’t yet realize he can’t play center field get religion!

McLouth received a Gold Glove because he committed only a single error and made his share of highlight-reel plays. Still, in true Edmondsian fashion, a great majority of these plays were necessitated by a poor read off the bat and then an exaggerated, uniform-soiling dive for the ball. Add to that his running feud with the outfield fence—McLouth plays balls hit off or around the wall as if they’re contagious—and there’s an easy case to be made for shunting him off to a corner as soon as possible.

That is, if his bat is up to the task. McLouth hit much better in 2008 than he did before it, setting career highs in every offensive category that matters and a few that don’t. He’s a year older, which means he’ll get a nice raise in arbitration but not so much that he won’t have value to budget-minded teams. If the Pirates can snag a few bona fide prospects for a “proven young All-Star” soon to be exposed as a fourth outfielder, that’d be a nifty trick.

As my submission of this said (paraphrasing here);

"The Pirates exist so that all the other bad teams have someone to point to and say "See, at least we aren't them." Similar to the Lions in the NFL, or Mike Tyson after Buster Douglas got him."

Gee, yet another writer who didn't pay any attention to McLouth's success after moving into the starting lineup in 2007.

I'm shocked, I tell you! Shocked!

Suckiness is a horrible word to see in print, especially from a major news outlet.

OK, where's the conspiracy guy? I need him to interpret this for me.

So wait - minus Bay and Nady, but plus all active LaRoches, some Moss and Craig Hansen's fastball - still not enough?

One more thing - I don't think that Matt Morris was out in the bullpen stabbing Jeff Andrews in the back. Getting a veteran pitcher to help the young guys is great, but that veteran pitcher has to be able to, you know, pitch. And the Pirates will soon be stocked with the pitching riches courtesy of the Troy Buckely plan (no sinkers, Mike Crotta), so all Kerrigan has to do is keep the staff on line with the party line.

I'm not sure that's a plan I'd want to believe in.

"Gee, yet another writer who didn't pay any attention to McLouth's success after moving into the starting lineup in 2007."

Just to save all you lazy bastards from having to look it up:

McLouth as starter, 2007: .273/.368/.492 in 304 PA
McLouth 2008: .276/.356/.497 in 685 PA

There was a Pirate castoff reliever named Josh Sharpless a couple of years ago. He had control issues I think, but some of his minor league numbers were excellent in the low minors (74 inn, 42 h, 109 k, 55 bb in '04 Single-A)(21 inn, 8 h, 30 k, 9 bb in '06 Double-A). Anyway, I guess he had a bad 4 innings in Pittsburgh in '07, so they cut him. I think the Giants picked him up, but he's 27 now and going nowhere.

Why wouldn't the Pirates at least show a little more patience with the guy, and get the BB numbers down?

Yeah, McLouth as 4th OF is a gross exaggeration. He may well end up "exposed" as nothing more than an average corner OF but there are worse things in this world.

But sure, if someone's will to trade for him as if he really is Carlos Beltran in his prime, then sure.

Okay, so they're Mississippi, which means the Nationals are...South Carolina.

TerpNats,
mind send me an email?

"Why wouldn't the Pirates at least show a little more patience with the guy, and get the BB numbers down?"

He has very pedestrian stuff, so if he's scared to throw strikes, he's not going to be successful. That, and he really pissed off the new front office by showing up to camp out of shape.

I still would've hung onto him, but I can understand why they didn't.
