CBS Sports: Hannahan’s Indians Teammates Have His Back

Classy:

So even while Hannahan was at bat in the game, Speed booked the first flight in the morning . . . back to Cleveland, even knowing that would likely be too late. His next step was calling about private planes. They were available, but they cost $35,000 . . .  seven percent of his annual salary—that’s a lot of money on a gamble that it would be the night Jenny gave birth.

At some point after the game, teammate Justin Masterson asked Hannahan what was happening and as soon as Hannahan told him, Masterson told him get the private jet.

“Book it,” Masterson told Hannahan, according to Charley Walters of the Pioneer Press. When Hannahan balked, Masterson insisted.

At that point, Masterson passed around a hat, getting donations from teammates. And pretty quickly, they had the $35,000 covered—call it a baby shower gift from his teammates.

Hannahan booked the plane and once it landed in Cleveland, there was a limo waiting for him at the airport to take him to the hospital. Hannahan finally got to his wife at 3 a.m. and just 15 minutes later, John Joseph Hannahan V was born.

A great story.

This is good stuff.
Hannahan had a legit Irish jig as his at-bat music when he was with the A's; I will always like him for that.

The fifth? Wow.

Good for Jack's teammates. Classy.

The fifth? Wow.

To stop at four and not take advantage of the chance to have a kid nicknamed "the fifth of Jack" would have been...well, probably wise.

Hanahan is a recovered/recovering alcoholic FWIW.

Also, how about "Joe Speed" being the name of an agent? Tremendous.

Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me.

He's no Bean Stringfellow.

Bean Stringfellow and his ill-monikered ilk always make me want to have children just to name them horrible things that will stick with them throughout the rest of his life. I applaud Major Major Major Major's father, for instance.

Should have flown commercial and put the $35 K in the kid's college fund. You never know when one of your kids is gonna be dumb enough to pass up $2.5 M to go to Vandy or something.

Speaking as the father of a 1 lb., 13 oz. preemie, it was a little dusty for me while reading this article. At least for now, the Indians are my favorite AL team.
