CENTRAL PARK - JULY 1, 2017 10 AM - BBTF ANNUAL SOFTBALL EXTRAVAGANZA

I think this year we should make t-shirts.

The Central Park field for 10 AM on July 1st has been submitted for approval to the Parks Department, but not yet assigned.  We’re waiting to hear back.  It’s never been a problem as yet, so hopefully it won’t be this year as well. UPDATE: 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM, Great Lawn, Field #2. -vi

Note: This is the same weekend as the massive SABR extravaganza in NYC.  I would expect all connections and all favors to be called in to get some retired MLB players or broadcast and basement-dwelling notables to come by.  Rob Neyer, Tommy Lasorda, Benny Agbayani, Robothal, Pete Rose, no target too high.  Or too low.  So maybe Calcaterra could make it.

Let’s hear it, who’s coming?

Yes. Also be up for a night-before meetup.

Yes! Hoping for less rain this time.
Rain is what left me stranded in Dallas instead of at the game last year. Less rain would be preferred.

The Grand Hyatt, at Grand Central, is the SABR hotel FWIW.

How long do you guys play for? I'm gonna be in town to go to the Mets game at 4:00 that day.

You can always just catch the first game. I think last year we were done by 1(?)

I am in...last year we played a game and a half or so I think before they kicked us off the field due to rain

HOLY CRAP there's finally a game in town on that day? I haven't bought tickets yet, but I'll definitely be going, as we all should.

I'll be there, Insalla.

I'm trying to book a field for a different day/group earlier in the year, how long do they usually take to process and approve?
   13. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: March 30, 2017 at 01:35 PM (#5426048)
There will be some serious steroid rumors about JE if he has to bow out for whatever reason, given his performance last year. But who would the commish of the BBTF softball game be in the first place?
   14. Howie Menckel Posted: March 30, 2017 at 01:39 PM (#5426054)
Shooty is the spiritual leader.

So I've lost these 12 pounds this year for a family wedding in August, but I'll take this occasion as a bonus. Ideally I'll be at goal weight by July 1.....

We're usually only 2-3 hours, depending on how long we have the permit for, how long before the next group with a permit shows up, and how long folks can last in the summer sun before seeking refuge in the nearest bar. A 10 AM start would leave plenty of time for the Mets game.
   16. villageidiom Posted: March 30, 2017 at 01:49 PM (#5426070)

Alfonso Soriano is available.

Schedule it for Canada Day...I see the game you're playing here.

I'm a maybe...planning a trip to England this summer as well, so we'll have to see how it all fits together.

We need to plan our annual NYC trip, but I think we have a wedding to attend that weekend.

I'll be there, if at all popsicle. Not sure about the after-game game though. Getting out to Flushing for a 4 PM start doesn't leave much time for the all-important post-game pub crawl.

For years, I've been telling myself that I should join SABR. Now that the big convo is coming to NYC I guess I have to. But I see that if I wait until August I can get the discounted Old Farts rate.

Decisions, decisions!

Put me down for a strong "maybe". The only thing that could interfere would be work, but I try to avoid that as much as possible.

I might actually not stink so much this year as I'm in the midst of a season of community league softball down here in SoFLA. I got a glove and everything, and just received my JUGS Soft Toss machine today so I can take b.p. in my yard.

Don't know if I can make it. Will be at Niagara the week before and I'm going to be getting ready to close on a home at that point and that is around the time of my GF's birthday and I don't think she'll want to go to NYC.

   37. Hysterical & Useless Posted: March 31, 2017 at 11:28 AM (#5426667)
Dang, McCoy, you're in danger of having your honorary NYCitizenship suspended. What's this now, like 3 straight years of no show? Not sure what the Committee will say...

Good luck with the closing, will be keeping fingers crossed on your behalf.

When Blastin says he'll only run 10 miles or so before coming, you know he's serious about the game. 10 miles, he's just starting to get his legs stretched out. Looking forward to seeing you, man.

I hope LA Hombre will be bringing his Mike Trout impression, we need a counter to Jason's Harper (good season Harper, that is). He was a one-man wrecking crew last year.

Edmundo: If you want to carpool, I'm game. There's about a 71% chance I'll get lost though so we'll want to leave early!

Also it's probably important to note that I am catcher-in-beer-league terrible at softball, so don't be fooled by my being younger than most of you and pick me anything other than last. I do bring lots of intangibles though.

I don't think I've ever played on Jason's team, and IIRC I'm 3-1 in Primer softball. Maybe 4-0. I'll have to check the records.

EDIT: Checked the records, and yep, I'm undefeated. 4-0. All your base are belong to me.

I will add what Paste said: I'm younger and fast and in very good shape but I have terrible hand-eye coordination. I could probably hit the ball pretty far if I ever squared it up and get an inside the parker. But I will drop anything thrown at me.

So like I said, I'll pinch run (and take a hack or two, I guess). :)

Running at these events is strictly optional (and subjective - what one person regards as "running" might not be recognizable as the same to everyone else).

Now I don't feel so all alone. This is my story, minus the inside-the-parker bit. And the young part. And the very good shape part. But the rest of it--definitely.

I took 20 years off from softball, got my AARP card - and in my BBTF debut, I did not have a swing and a miss all day and scored the winning run in the nightcap. and no one, as of yet, will bet on me beating you in a footrace.

don't ask me about running. or throwing. or fielding.

but if you ever were even decent at the game, no age is an issue. we had at least two players last year in their 60s who blended right in.....

But seriously, folks, we will need base coaches. On my rec league team we are under STRICT instructions *NEVER* to look at the ball while on base; you watch your coach for the go/stay signal OR ELSE!

You can coach for both teams for all I care so it's a good excuse to bask in the brilliance of the BTF softball elite for a brief moment.

I came close once - a collision between my left-center fielder and shortstop (1 concussion, 1 broken collar bone) ended the game before I really laid into the umpire like I was tempted to do...bad day all-around...especially the left-center fielder who insisted on trying to play his afternoon games with the broken collar bone.

So am I the only one here who's ever been ejected from a slow pitch softball game?
I did, once.

It was a must-win game for both teams, we were blowing out a team early, and the ump decided he'd give them a chance and stopped calling strikes. Not blatantly, mind you, but we had an excellent pitcher who could throw a strike whenever he wanted, but balls that bounced off the corners of the plate wouldn't be called strikes, close plays at first always went to the other team, etc. Our guy was forced to throw everything down the middle, and suddenly, a blowout became a close game.

After a double-play became a fielder's choice in the next-to-last inning and led to a run, I'd had enough. I was the first guy up , and I went up jawing. The guy seemed sheepish at first because he knew his little nice-guy act had gotten out of hand, but he wasn't going to let a player go off on him. Then the first pitch came, just missed the plate, and he called it a strike to let me know who's boss. I stomped on home plate and threw my bat, and I unloaded the kind of language you'll find me use in OmniChatters after a bad loss.

Luckily, we still won the game.

While pitching in the DCJCC league in 2002 or 2003, I got ejected by an umpire who didn't know a strike zone from a fire hydrant. FWIW, I didn't call him a c0cksucker.

He knows that instead of that ideal it'll be a couple dozen people saying "IT'S A TRAP!" during the vows.

He knows that instead of that ideal it'll be a couple dozen people saying "IT'S A TRAP!" during the vows.

But it is, it really is!

When I was publishing the newsletter for a railroad hobbyist group a woman e-mailed me to ask if trains would be running past a historic building next to the tracks where she wanted to hold her wedding reception. I replied that there might be a few, which did NOT sit well with her. She took me to task for ruining her wedding plans, as if I had any control over when trains would run.

That's when I learned:
1) never get married
B) some (most?) women come with an extra helping of crazy.

I say blow off the wedding, come to the softball game. Do the right thing.

Actual humans thought, "SABR is in NYC that weekend, and this site hosts many SABR members and an actual SABR chapter, so that seems like a great opportunity for scheduling a game in 2017."

Actual humans expressed this thought, on this site, in multiple threads, as early as August 2016.

Does anyone have David Eckstein's number? We need to get him and Keith Law to be team captains.

Yeesh. You're such a prima donna.

I'm waiting for confirmation of exactly what forms and brands of booze will be available before committing.

I'm pretty sure the bar will have anything you want. The game itself, not so much. It's 10 AM, and they're Nazis about bringing booze into Central Park.

If there are any typos in this post it's because my nose is turned up too far to see my screen.

Never mind.

C'mon, Ray makes a comment about "actual humans" and there are no sarcastic comments? Are you all losing it or is this thread more polite due to the threat of actually seeing each other?

I made noises about coming last year and this year I think I have no conflicts, so mark me as a strong maybe.

Chris Truby would be a wicked captain.

What do the Nazis actually *do* about booze in the park?

Actually, as of 13 months ago, nothing, unless you're causing trouble. Snapper's info is out of date:

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., New York City Police Department Commissioner William J. Bratton, and Mayor Bill de Blasio today announced a new initiative to change how individuals who commit low-level offenses are processed in Manhattan. Beginning on Monday, March 7, 2016, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office will no longer prosecute most violations or infractions, and the NYPD will no longer arrest individuals who commit these offenses – such as littering, public consumption of alcohol, or taking up two seats on the subway – unless there is a demonstrated public safety reason to do so. This initiative will enable the NYPD to devote its resources to investigating serious crimes, while further reducing the backlog of cases in Criminal Court. The issuance of summonses instead of arrests is expected to result in the diversion of approximately 10,000 arrests that would be prosecuted in Manhattan Criminal Court.

You blokes can also peacefully urinate in the park, if need be.

Stop scheduling this during the World Series of Poker, jerks.

The best slow pitch ejection I've ever seen was in a game between two of the biggest ####### teams in the league. At one point a big tubby guy chugged into third base, and apparently started jawing with the opposing 3B. The next batter launched a no doubt HR over the fence, and the runner at third decides to A) pick up some dirt and throw it in the 3B's face, and B) taunt him as he slowly walks to home plate backwards.

The pitcher, who wasn't feeling so great about the home run, steps into this guy's path (unbeknownst to the runner as he's walking backwards) and punches him as hard as he can in the back of the neck.

The pitcher got suspended - which was great because we played that team the next week. Normally we never would have been able to beat them, but they were missing their best player, and early in the game I sent their second best player to the hospital!

Well, indirectly. I bloodied up his girlfriend's face pretty good, and since he's a gentleman he accompanied her to the hospital...but the important thing is it weakened their roster!

Good grief! This BTF softball game is intended to be a friendly one, so let's not turn this into "Off-Topic Beatdown", please.

Everything else I was going to say on the subtopic has already been said before, in many threads, to the relevant audience. I'm not going to be the guy to beat an obvious message into the ground through excessive repetition, but if you're looking for someone to do it I hear Alfonso Soriano is available.
