CENTRAL PARK - JULY 1, 2017 10 AM - BBTF ANNUAL SOFTBALL EXTRAVAGANZA

I think this year we should make t-shirts.

The Central Park field for 10 AM on July 1st has been submitted for approval to the Parks Department, but not yet assigned.  We’re waiting to hear back.  It’s never been a problem as yet, so hopefully it won’t be this year as well. UPDATE: 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM, Great Lawn, Field #2. -vi

Note: This is the same weekend as the massive SABR extravaganza in NYC.  I would expect all connections and all favors to be called in to get some retired MLB players or broadcast and basement-dwelling notables to come by.  Rob Neyer, Tommy Lasorda, Benny Agbayani, Robothal, Pete Rose, no target too high.  Or too low.  So maybe Calcaterra could make it.

Let’s hear it, who’s coming?

Agreed. And we can't forget the controlling interest here: Ray's wedding to his sister. Unless somebody wants to plant a poison pill there so that she calls off the whole thing.

The Central Park field for 10 AM on July 1st has been submitted for approval to the Parks Department, but not yet assigned.  We’re waiting to hear back.  It’s never been a problem as yet, so hopefully it won’t be this year as well.

Did you submit it as "Saturday morning softball"? Because North Meadow #8 is booked for that vague group name from 10 to noon on 7/1.

As of now, nothing is booked for 10 AM to 3 PM at Great Lawn #2, #3, and #7, and 10 AM to 1 PM at North Meadow #5. Issued permits are here. (Note: North Meadow #5 is baseball, not softball.)

I submitted a day earlier in the year - waited a month to hear anything back and got nothing. Called and they booked it on the spot there for the same day - so if its not confirmed yet, I'd suggest calling in - seems to work better.

I count at least 10, in retrospect, "bucket list guys" for BBTF regulars - and that is just at a glance of those I have met. love the maybes, too. if on the fence, get off and go for it and be glad you did. This moderate swears that it's a welcoming crowd.

I think you're getting it the wrong way around. Come to the B(B)TF softball game to gain instant worldwide recognition, then carry that fame into the SABR convention meetings.

I am a very strong maybe. I'm only holding back from a yes in the unlikely event that work surprises me with something that would keep me away. It would also be nice to have confirmation that we have secured a field.

My rec league softball team has been playing me at catcher, and trust me when I say that is the safest position for me to play. During practice our skipper hits balls to us at the end of the evening. When we have successfully made 2 plays we are done with practice. I am always the last guy out there desperate to catch a fly ball, clanking it off my glove or watching it fly over my head. I can probably hold down second base in a pinch.

So I am gung-ho for this showdown. LET'S DO IT!

if these guys haven't already done so, I can hook him up with a former colleague who covered these 1956 "home" games. still a raconteur, I suspect. seriously, if any SABR people lurking have their contact info, I can make it happen, if that might beef up the presentation. they might even have his stories as reference, not knowing the byline is still alive and kicking, 61 years later.....

EZ Pass or they will bill you by mail. Some bridges may still have cash booths, but they are being phased out.

IIRC the field are around 97th-100th street in the middle of the Park. I'd assume 10-15 minutes to walk over to 5th Ave., and another 10-15 to cab it down to GCT. So, Noon should be fine if you don't need to change.

5th Avenue should generally be a breeze on the weekend, but you would want to check in advance for any parades or street fairs that might slow your cab down.

One AB at like 10:15/10:30? That's probably pretty doable.
   158. Steve Treder Posted: May 22, 2017 at 01:25 PM (#5460957)
Yeah, that's what I was thinking, but "probably pretty doable" doesn't exactly fill me with great confidence.

Is everyone just arriving at 10:00, or are people gathering earlier for warmup/BP?
   159. Hysterical & Useless Posted: May 22, 2017 at 02:34 PM (#5461029)
There will usually be a bunch there before the official start time. If no other group has the field booked, we can start right in. If another group is playing, we start making menacing gestures at about 5 of, encouraging them to move on.
   160. catomi01 Posted: May 22, 2017 at 02:40 PM (#5461035)
Due to the way the trains usually work, I've gotten there about an hour before the official start the last couple of years - don't think the field was occupied ahead of time in either case.
   161. villageidiom Posted: May 22, 2017 at 03:22 PM (#5461077)

The couple of times I went, I got there waaay early.

I guess this question is best aimed at the SABR crowd (Treder, Foghorn, TomH, others)... The game is at 10:00, which conflicts with a bunch of SABR stuff. I saw that some of the fields are still open later in the day. Is there a different time on Saturday that would work better for the SABR crowd? Note: The 10 AM game will proceed as scheduled. I guess I'm proposing a split-admission doubleheader of sorts.
   162. Steve Treder Posted: May 22, 2017 at 05:05 PM (#5461174)
Is there a different time on Saturday that would work better for the SABR crowd?

It's a nice gesture on your part, but I doubt it. Mark Armour and I already swapped presentation times that day -- he gave me the 11:30 slot in exchange for my 3:45 so that he could attend to the Olbermann thing in the Baseball Card Committee meeting. I suspect what you can do to accommodate one person won't work for the next. But maybe.

So here's what I'm thinking: how many would be up for getting together at 9:00 AM? It appears there will likely be field space. I honestly don't care about playing a formal game, just tossing the ball around and taking some BP would be just as much fun. Is this realistic?
   163. Hysterical & Useless Posted: May 23, 2017 at 11:14 AM (#5461472)
Hey, let's not limit this to the reality-based community!

I'm willing/able to show up pretty much whenever; not gonna impact my limited ability to play at all. Would certainly like to have a chance to meet some of the out-of-towners who aren't regulars at these fiascos.

I like this idea a lot. I'm going to a 4:00 Met game, so this is kinda ideal.

I'd definitely like to get there at 9:00 so that I can head back to the SABR hotel by 10:15. But the only equipment I'll have is my glove (if I can find where it's buried in the hall closet). I'll have no softballs and no bats. Can somebody be there at 9:00 with equipment?

(Damn, I'm demanding.)

Will have to check train schedule once we get closer, but yes, I will plan on getting there early - I'll have bats and balls. Also - put another tentative (but likely) plus 1 for me (the 27th game idea piqued some interest among my team, so a few of them want to come down now).

I'm out in Port Jeff. Usually go out of there or the Ronkonkoma line depending on whether i want to spend more time on the train or sitting on 347

Small world. I am from Miller Place, was born in Port Jeff and my dad lives in Ronkonkoma still. Tell Long Island I said hello!

For me, it depends on scheduling, etc. I'll want to see Treder's presentation, for instance. It will likely be a game-time decision.

I'm assuming we're talk about 12", right? If so, I'll bring my mitt, just in case. #16inchbrokenfingers #chicagostyle

12" clinchers - not sure if we have to use clinchers due to the field or just a group consensus that we are not athletic enough for anything harder than that, but its what we've always used.

Group consensus from years ago. Or consensus among a subset, combined with general indifference from the group.

OK, how in bloody h3ll are these measurements derived?? I Googled until my fingers were numb and people just talk about 16" balls without ever describing how you get 16 inches of anything from a round ball that is maybe 4 inches across. Even multiplying by pi doesn't come close. The engineer in me is craving an explanation!

Also, we can't discount the possibility that the game will be rained out, making SABR attendees ultimately happy.

Wikipedia says it's the circumference. I'm not sure I've ever seen a 16" ball, but the 12" variety is supposedly 3.8" in diameter so I assume the 16" one is the requisite 5.1".

Just noticing that Shooty booked the field, but didn't say he's going to the game. I'll add him as a yes, but if anyone knows different I can change it.

Good news / bad news:

Hal Richman, founder of Strat-O-Matic that I began playing in 1974, is going to be at SABR. Yay! I want to meet him.

But his gig is Saturday AM. Sorry, gents, I must pull out of softball.

I mentioned this to Sean Forman this week, he might put in an appearance. I think I might be on the Treder Schedule, but I'd like to at least meet some people.

This is probably in the thread somewhere, but where is the field within Central Park? I've been to NYC maybe a half dozen times, but other than the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I've never been in the park.

So are these the Heckscher Softball fields at the south end of the park, or the fields on the Great Lawn?

Actually, I don't think the location has been confirmed yet. At least, not for those of us in the general public.

But Central Park is only a little bigger than the principality of Monaco, right? Shouldn't be too hard to just wander around and find the bunch of pasty-faced basement-dwelling geeks...

When Shooty gets confirmation on the field he can post it here. I will edit the thread to put in the header to make it easier to find, and I can add any other useful info folks want.
   192. Bote Man Posted: June 04, 2017 at 05:43 PM (#5468664)
The point was made earlier in the thread that calling them on the phone to reserve might result in an instantaneous confirmation, whereas the current web submission might sit in limbo for some time. I mean, is Shooty A.W.O.L. or has he lost interest? Would somebody currently active in this thread/game be better situated to confirm the field?
   193. Howie Menckel Posted: June 04, 2017 at 05:48 PM (#5468666)
Shouldn't be too hard to just wander around and find the bunch of pasty-faced basement-dwelling geeks...

in one of last year's best moments, one BBTFer owned to the reason he was late for our game: he played a couple of innings on a different field with ANOTHER group of out-of-shape, middle-aged-and-up bunch of mediocre players before realizing his mistake.
:)

Would somebody currently active in this thread/game be better situated to confirm the field?

I was going to snark back, "Well, first we'd need someone active in this thread who knows Shooty's name." But then after some reflection I remembered his name from prior years. So I've confirmed it. The permit is for 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM for Great Lawn field #2. I've updated the top of the thread to reflect it.

They said they'd email "me" the permit, but it'll really be sent to Shooty. For some reason they thought I was Shooty. Granted, I never corrected them...

It's worth noting that the website I linked above still doesn't show the field as being reserved. I'm assuming they don't update it until the permit is actually issued.
   195. villageidiom Posted: June 05, 2017 at 12:21 PM (#5468998)
Also, someone else has the field from 8 to 10, and I'd be surprised if someone has it for the 30 minutes after that. I suppose it's possible we'll be able to get out there at 10, so I'm leaving the thread title as 10 AM.
   196. Lassus Posted: June 05, 2017 at 12:41 PM (#5469011)
I have actually just received the permit from the Great Man himself. Great Lawn, Softball-02, July 1 10:30 AM - 1:30 PM.
   197. villageidiom Posted: June 05, 2017 at 01:32 PM (#5469046)
For those coming from the Grand Hyatt, you'd take the 4, 5, or 6 train from Grand Central to the 86th St station, then head west to the park. Between 85th and 86th there's an entry into the park that will put you alongside East Drive. Follow that. East Drive crosses over 85th St.

Shortly after that there will be a path crossing East Drive. To your left it goes to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Our skills are far away from that, so take the path in the opposite direction, to your right. That path leads to the Great Lawn. You will emerge there, near the even-numbered fields. Turn left and Field 2 will be that-a-way just a short walk.

If you have any sense of Central Park landmarks, it's the softball field closest to the Obelisk. No word on whether the Obelisk is our key to understanding the typical Jack Keefe post.

Total travel time from Grand Hyatt, including walking and subway, will be 20-30 minutes. A cab might be quicker depending on traffic, but IIRC cabs in the Grand Central area are hard to catch outside of the usual queue on 42nd. Hopefully the hotel concierge can do better.

Google's smarter than me, so I'll listen...maybe I can find my way right to the field this year instead of wandering in circles around the park for half an hour.
