CENTRAL PARK - JULY 1, 2017 10 AM - BBTF ANNUAL SOFTBALL EXTRAVAGANZA

I think this year we should make t-shirts.

The Central Park field for 10 AM on July 1st has been submitted for approval to the Parks Department, but not yet assigned.  We’re waiting to hear back.  It’s never been a problem as yet, so hopefully it won’t be this year as well. UPDATE: 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM, Great Lawn, Field #2. -vi

Note: This is the same weekend as the massive SABR extravaganza in NYC.  I would expect all connections and all favors to be called in to get some retired MLB players or broadcast and basement-dwelling notables to come by.  Rob Neyer, Tommy Lasorda, Benny Agbayani, Robothal, Pete Rose, no target too high.  Or too low.  So maybe Calcaterra could make it.

Let’s hear it, who’s coming?

See above; we have a field confirmed.

I've updated the list to remove TomH, who has SABR conflicts, and Shooty, who never said he could make it and reportedly will be out of town. I've also added Mike to pre-game, and shifted Foghorn there due to SABR conflicts.

vi, I'm surprised they couldn't tell over the phone that you're not shooty. You're much taller.

If the pre-game is still planned for 9 AM at The Field (which will be in use, alas), I also hope to be on hand for that. I presume the SABRcats are providing the dancing girls.

Which part? The driving, the parking, or the "free"? Or "all of the above?"
   205. Lassus Posted: June 06, 2017 at 07:50 AM (#5469550)
Attempting to find parking in Manhattan is never "crazy", per se, but it can be extraordinarily unlikely.

Unlikely, though not crazy. You should also check out nyc.bestparking.com ahead of time to scope a few garages that won't rip your face off.

Looks like there are a couple of places in the West 90's where you can park for $20-25.
   207. Bote Man Posted: June 06, 2017 at 09:28 AM (#5469585)
Driving: no problem.

Parking: need local knowledge. I read some comments (on Yelp maybe?) about the worthwhileness of finding free parking on the street, which I thought was preposterous given that there's a whole Seinfeld episode about it. Then I scoped out Google Street View and saw real images of real, empty parking spaces on C.P.W. and figured it's worth a try before resorting to a parking garage.

If worse comes to worst I can go online and snag a space and drive to it 5 minutes later, but the thrill of parking for free in Manhattan has a certain appeal. Saturday morning, people running errands leaving spaces...wish me luck!

There's an added benefit to driving: if I can score a decent bat between now and then I will bring it with me.

Isn't everyone?

It can be done, but you might be better off just planning to pay for parking.

A couple of years ago I parked at this lot. That year we went after the game to a bar around 81st & Amsterdam, so this location was pretty convenient.

If you're thinking about crashing SABR afterward, a quick look on parkwhiz shows the garage at 240 E. 41st is charging $14 for up to 12 hours that day. It'd be $20 after subway fare back & forth to the field, but that's still a pretty good deal for parking in Manhattan. (Note: my standards for what's reasonable for city parking is based on Boston, where $14 is a pretty good price for the first hour of parking.)

Equipment check? We've got time still, but I'm bored at work, so figured its worth starting the ball rolling on this.

I'll bring 4-5 clinchers, 3-4 bats, and a couple of extra gloves if anyone needs. The people I'm bringing will likely have a couple of bats too. Bases - I can bring if needed, but they're a pain, so if anyone local can take that it would be good.

Doesn't Shooty usually bring the bases? I think we should say he has to bring them to the park before he goes to marry Ray's sister.

Hey everyone! Sorry I have been so remiss in checking BBTF over the last few months. I even received an email from one of you guys (good work!).

There are some tentative plans forming up for that weekend *but* I think I am a very likely to be there for the third year in a row. I am glad to see the list looking much more robust this year than last, and to see some new (and some notorious) names!

I took a 75-minute walk today about 25 miles from our July 1 softball site, and if it's this humid again on that day, I'll have to dress in sponges to avoid flooding the field with buckets of perspiration.

#Irishguy

forecasts more than 5 days out are pretty shaky, but forecast for the area has temps around 75 to 80 in the week leading up and day of game. chances of showers, but no days forecast at more than 50 percent on that

The weather.com 10-day shows scattered thunderstorms, 60% chance of precipitation, and a 6 mph wind out of the west. Unsure if that helps or hurts the HRs.

Looking more than 3 to 5 days out you're generally going to do just as well simply looking at historical averages for the date.

A confident forecast of rain would be one of the things that would keep me from traveling 1400 miles for this game.

A forecast of rain (or even better, actual rain!) mean you get to do the postgame without the hassle of actually having to play.

Since we have plenty of people signed up, I am hoping we can play several games! I know we got rained out last time, but it was not nearly enough softball for me.

Also, I plan on bringing something to drink to the field this year. NYC has really relaxed the rules on that, and they weren't really enforced before either. Anybody with me?
   235. Howie Menckel Posted: June 19, 2017 at 09:12 PM (#5478934)

I upgraded my frame this year - in subsequent years I will seek to restore throwing, running (ok jogging) and even fielding, one year at a time. I will be content to be DH or even PH this year. again. not bringing a glove, as per tradition.

Edmundo should be a strong lure for fence-sitters on attending, whether he pitches again or not.....

I count at least 11 others in that category, full disclosure, and see zero "run, don't just walk away" names

;)

I have even met Rickey! at this game a couple of years ago, and he is a fun guy to have a beer with

also anyone who just wants to show up and mostly play the 0th warmup inning or the multiple post-game extra innings at a tavern are welcome as well. it's not like it's a hardcore softball tryout for a pennant-minded team or something. it's a BBTF outing. those on the sidelines also serve.

and for those outside their comfort zone who still are hesitant, I say go for it. and I say you'll be glad you did. and this is boring, unscary Howie saying this. if you cite this post as the only reason you showed up, I'll buy you a pint or a smoothie
:)

Seriously, anybody who's in the "well, maybe" camp, or even the "I don't think so" battalion, Howie at the post-game is worth the price of admission all on his own. Multiple other attendees will vouch for this.

Brian, remember, game time is 10:30 AM. And there will be blunt instruments ready to hand. Think of the children!

I went to the batting cage the other day. 15 pitches.

1: HUGE swing and miss.

2-3: grounders.

4: popup.

5-9: line drives.

10: swing and miss. I was distracted.

11: line drive.

Switched to lefty.

12: popup. Pitch came in while I was switching to lefty.

13-14: line drives.

15: grounder.

Those were my first swings in a couple of years, as I was stranded in Dallas for BTF Softball last year, and my only other annual softball game was rained out.

#249 - I got one of them thar JUGS soft toss machines that pops the ball 2-3 feet up in the air so you can whack it. It's nothing like real pitching, but at least you can focus your hand-eye coordination. I still have trouble from time to time making solid contact. My problem now is that I don't have a bat since I was borrowing from my coach's quiver during the Spring season, but that's over and I just haven't acquired a bat yet.

I'm hoping I'm on Jason's team because he is softball's answer to Daniel Murphy (too soon??).

Lassus, when are you coming into town? Since I'm hoping to do the pre-game @ 9 AM I will probably be in on Friday and staying in Brooklyn (Flatbush) for the night. Can offer you a room. Can't beat CJ's price (no, I won't pay you to stay in our apt) but can definitely equal it.

Due to weekend track work on the Brighton line (Q train), there will be no local service to Manhattan, so have to walk 8-10 minutes south to get the express. Trip to Central Park is about an hour.

Email through site works fine.

6-day forecast: 30% chance of rain, 86°F.

Going by what Weather Underground says for Queens (close enough for this purpose) there's a significant amount of blue on the Saturday bar graph. If Wednesday morning comes and it looks like an obvious washout, I'm going to have to abandon the cause. Still hopeful it's on, though, since it could change between now and then.
   271. Howie Menckel Posted: June 25, 2017 at 08:55 PM (#5482528)

weather.com now has it at "high of 86, AM thunderstorms, 40 pct chance of rain"

good into Thursday, but the next 7 days are meh so far

then again, I went to a festival today (headliners Molly Hatchet and The Outlaws #badass) and it was supposed to be a perfect day. it was - after the unscheduled act known as Torrential Downpours played an unexpected 30-minute opening set. weather is fickle here this time of year.......

5-day forecast: 40% chance of rain, 89°F.

Maybe we could play an indoor game instead. Which is the SABR hotel? Do they have a ballroom? We're playing ball, that's what it's for. It's right there in the name.
   273. Bote Man Posted: June 26, 2017 at 11:31 AM (#5482758)
Today (Monday morning) my link in #270 makes Saturday morning look pretty darned good: temps in the mid-80s with negligible rain chances. Every day is a new forecast.

Now, Sunday on the other hand looks like a rainout, so I commend the organizers for their foresight!

I admire your determination.

My 1994 pilgrimage to Wrigley occurred during the labor dispute, so no Cubs games. I confidently told my pals that we should proceed to Murphy's Bleachers for our usual pre-game ritual, and the gods would work it out for us - somehow.

sure enough, around noon, I notice a guy walk in with: a bunch of pals, a whiffle ball, and a whiffle ball bat.

"Guys, it's happening," I said.

sure enough, these jokers were having a bachelor party - and with no Cubs game, they decided to hold a whiffle ball game with the Wrigley brick as the "catcher." (Is that Waveland Avenue?)

so we jokers decided we would serve as "the crowd." we got a case or two of beer and set up shop, going into full "HERE, BATTER, BATTER!" fandom. We yelled out nicknames for some players, cheered the long hits - and mocked the occasional swing-and-miss.

one of the best parts was that the groom was reluctant to play an extra inning in the tied game, because he didn't want to risk being late for the pre-rehearsal dinner planning. the rest of the players weren't having it. so rightly so, the game continued to its conclusion.

Wrigley Field is a magical place.

Current (as of 6 AM Tuesday the 27th) weather forecast for Central Park this Saturday: partly cloudy, high of 85 farenheit (around 1 PM), no more than 15% chance of rain, and that in the afternoon. But as noted above, forecasts change from hour to hour.

This is the last weekend before my training season begins, so I am excited not to have to run like 17 miles beforehand like I did the other time I came (in 2013).

Maybe. The LF wall at Wrigley is Waveland; the RF wall is Sheffield.

I'm a "westerner" who is perfectly willing to go east this year.

The west side is closer to home for me.

Lassus: that did not work, apparently.

Sent you a sitemail.
   282. villageidiom Posted: June 27, 2017 at 02:59 PM (#5483795)
Oh, will we be doing east side or west side for the post-game festivities? Last two years we've gone west. East side is better for those using MetroNorth (hint hint).

My own personal vote is to find a place closer to the SABR event. If we can't get them to show up to the game, and can't get them to show up before the game, then perhaps we can get them to come to the postgame.

SABR is east side, but it also is far enough south of the field that east/west doesn't really matter.

I don't think I'm going to play on Saturday. I really want to hear the presentations and I think I want to do that more than I want to play ball, even though I brought my shoes and glove.

Obviously, I will still be going anywhere where there's going to be food and beer and people.

Weather forecast for Central Park Saturday:

Mostly sunny, high of 88 (around 2 PM; game time in low 80s); precipitation probability about 2% at game time, rising to 15% after 1:30 or so; gentle southerly breezes

Let's play two!

Are SABR people still planning on showing up at the Park at 9 AM for pre-game conversation (and mockery of those hogging our field)? I plan on being there, but there are limits to how many strangers I'm willing to accost with accusations of being BBTF layabouts.

   293. Bote Man Posted: June 28, 2017 at 10:11 AM (#5484282)
It seems that it would be easier for a relative few SABR attendees to make their way up toward the Great Lawn on their own schedules than it would be for 25 or so exhausted softball players to find their way down to Grand Central Terminal en masse.

Anyway, I am a GO! You've been warned.

Yeah. Not sure how early I'll be there yet, but I'm still planning to get there early.

No, I assure you, pictures are not necessary for this. In fact, a lack of pictures is necessary.

Other details:

- We have a volunteer for balls and bats, but we still need bases.

- Postgame. Just pick something. I'll add it to the header so it's easy to find for the SABR crowd and/or lurkers.

- The gathering is on rain or shine. The game is on as long as the Parks Department doesn't kick us out and there's no lightning. If the game gets called we'll immediately move to postgame.

Now half the crew are praying for rain.

The other half are atheists, so they're just hoping.

I have these as well if needed - if someone else does as well, I will happily leave them at home.

As noted, I'll have balls and at least 2 bats. The other Catomi's will likely have a few bats as well.

We probably won't get there as early as I hoped...the way the trains look, it will be closer to 10 than to 9....so if the early crowd wants to throw the ball around, I would suggest someone scare up another ball or two.
