CENTRAL PARK - JULY 1, 2017 10 AM - BBTF ANNUAL SOFTBALL EXTRAVAGANZA

I think this year we should make t-shirts.

The Central Park field for 10 AM on July 1st has been submitted for approval to the Parks Department, but not yet assigned.  We’re waiting to hear back.  It’s never been a problem as yet, so hopefully it won’t be this year as well. UPDATE: 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM, Great Lawn, Field #2. -vi

Note: This is the same weekend as the massive SABR extravaganza in NYC.  I would expect all connections and all favors to be called in to get some retired MLB players or broadcast and basement-dwelling notables to come by.  Rob Neyer, Tommy Lasorda, Benny Agbayani, Robothal, Pete Rose, no target too high.  Or too low.  So maybe Calcaterra could make it.

Let’s hear it, who’s coming?

I will shoot for a 9 am arrival just because.

have kicked off a 4-year plan for this annual game as part of my #wecanrebuildhim focus.

step 1 this year was don't be fat anymore. #check, T-22 lbs and counting

subsequent years will seek to relearn how to throw, field, and run. have yet to pick which one for each year.

I'd like to say that as an AARP member, I may have started with the hardest one - but here I am.

wait, 'run' might contend for the hardest, so maybe that one is next year's goal.

My status should be downgraded to MAYBE. I need to remain in DC until at least Friday night and quite possibly early Saturday morning. :(
   304. Howie Menckel Posted: June 28, 2017 at 11:42 PM (#5485045)
well, the Jim Bottomley/Mark Whiten player's status can't affect more than a dozen runs in a 15-run game so there's that.

luckily JE also sticks the dismount in the 10th inning. ok that reads a little odd
he's fun after the game
hmm, still just getting there

Well, if Jason is not coming then I'm just turning around and heading south. It's too d@mned cold in Fayetteville this morning anyhow! Who else is gonna put up with all my Midnight Run quotes???
   306. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: June 29, 2017 at 07:08 AM (#5485085)
That's awesome...I look forward to seeing the new-and-improved Howie make fools of us on the field. And I hope Jason can make it, although we can be reasonably assured of a quick, low-scoring affair if he doesn't.

Guys, have to bow out. Have to travel on business tomorrow morning. Gonna meet up with a couple folks at the Hyatt bar this afternoon for a quick drink if anyone's around.

LOL. I'd sooner walk in Hasidic garb through the streets of Mosul than take that particular train. I'll be driving up this time.

Don't be so sure, Dave. How many home runs did Scooter Gennett hit in his next game?

Ugh. Deal me OUT. :(((

I have to remain in DC until Saturday afternoon.

If anyone wants to grab an after-dinner drink on Sunday evening somewhere in the city or BK, please let me know.

Regardless, Dave and Chicago Joe, please send along contact info that you check every now and then. ;-) Thx.

Are you familiar with the words "atherosclerosis"? "cholesterol"?

If you want I'll outline a complete balanced diet for you.

To echo bote, are you familiar with the word "alcoholism"?

Anyway, bitter pill to swallow with JE, Lassus, and McCoy all out due to circumstances.

I'm curently destroying BK's stock of Guinness. Lmk if you want to meet up today or tomorrow:

I grew up with a pal like Chicago Joe. our line was "when you go out with him, you don't bring a watch - you bring a calendar."

If Lassus isn't coming, that means we're out a team photographer as well. Anybody else got an SO (or even an ISO) who can bring and use a camera? We will need evidence for the police/insurance report, to document the injuries eg Howie's sanguinary exhibition of 2015. Or was it 2014?

Check the tape!

   324. bunyon Posted: June 30, 2017 at 12:45 PM (#5486019)
I'd do a game in DC but not in July in the afternoon.

I've got a decent pocket camera, and writing this may make me remember to bring it. We'll just have to pass it around to whoever's idle on the batting team.

look forward to seeing the new-and-improved Howie make fools of us on the field.

oh, no. you'll get the same mediocre hitting, pathetic "running," and complete lack of fielding or throwing (a glove is part of the 2018 plan, though).

I'll just look better doing all that, is all.
   332. Hysterical & Useless Posted: June 30, 2017 at 04:20 PM (#5486165)
For any not intimately familiar with the topography of Central Park, Great Lawn Field #2 is the field in the south east corner of (of all places!) the Great Lawn. It's pretty much directly behind the Metropolitan Museum, and within spitting distance of the Delacorte Theatre*, if that's your idea of a good time.

If you'd prefer to look at a map rather than taking my say-so, here's the Park's own interactive map. Handy thing to take on a picnic.

*I mention this because that's where the closest public restroom is located.

Dude, the game is starting a half hour after the time that was listed when the thread was originally posted.

A bunch of us are gathering earlier to warm up and/or hang out with any of the SABR crowd who can't make the game. Completely optional.

Show up any time. Game, pre-game, post-game, whatever.

Updated Central Park weather forecast:

High temp of 81 (around 2 PM); mid to high 70s while we're on the field

Southerly breeze, 7-9 mph

Chance of thunderstorm, 49% ~11 AM, rising to as high as a 62% chance in the late afternoon (when we'll have tables over our heads for protection).

So, coin toss whether we get a rerun of last year. I'm voting no.

Wow! We had such a better-than-average list going all week but very dosapppinting number of flakes the last two days. Snapper, Jason, Lassus, get it together!!

If first pitch is at 1030 I will try to get there by 10. Sorry that I cannot help with bases (did we get any?). I've got a bat and a glove and a willingness to run around.

I look forward to this every year-- excited to play and catch up with you guys. Is there a postgame bar yet (sorry I'm mobile)? If not I will scout the area now, I know the east side better than the west.

Got basses and balls packed. Train is supposed to hit Penn right around 9...so we'll get there however long the subway takes from that point
   356. Karl from NY Posted: July 01, 2017 at 12:46 AM (#5486528)
For those taking the subway from Penn Station, the C line has a disruption for the weekend. Uptown trains don't stop at 81th St or anything nearby. You have to go uptown to 125th St then back down. It might be easier to take the 1 train to 79th St and walk a few extra blocks.

I ran into big rain on the way back to PA. It looked like the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark for a while. The Mets/Phils game was in a delay as I reached home.

Some body parts are already sore, which does not bode well for the next couple of days.
   367. Howie Menckel Posted: July 01, 2017 at 08:48 PM (#5486776)
I'm still standing - that's a lie, I'm now sitting at home.

but I'm alive.

Games summary:

Honestly, a lot of us were pushed too far up the defensive spectrum - which in my case, meant I didn't get to DH. No lefty glove at the game, I can't throw, I can't run - and, well, it wasn't pretty.

my teammates picked me up with some of their own defensive.... challenges, let's say.

of course, the lower the quality of the play, the more enjoyable it is that a good time was had by all anyway.

I played the OF with baseball-ref founder Sean Forman, who I hadn't met before, and I saw Hall of Merit founder Joe Dimino for the first time in maybe a decade. I even met Chris Dial later at the SABR cocktail hour - and many others as well.

we prayed like hell for rain - most of us, anyway - that didn't come so we toughed it out. Later I take a 10-minute train ride from NY Penn Station to NJ - and, well, I got wet in Secaucus (then again, who hasn't?). some flooding all over North Jersey, while my hapless NL teammates and I got drenched with nothing but sunshine (the AL guys got friendly clouds, inning after inning). I now look like a broiled lobster in spite of my ballcap.

I don't stress it enough before these games, but BBTF guys are a fascinating, eclectic bunch. none moreso than Chicago Joe, who is the James Bond of BBTF. "Joe - Chicago Joe." he's still going because of course he is. he'll take down a few SABR guys tonight who don't know any better.

:)

Checking in. Made it home just fine. I should have taken up Edmundo's offer for sunscreen.

For the record, I'm now 6-0 in Primer softball. And unlike prior years, I actually contributed. A couple singles, 4 doubles, and a home run, is what I remember doing on the day. Post-game at Carlow East was great, and then Howie, Chicago Joe, and I went to the SABR hotel where we met up with many Primates - including Dimino and Forman both of whom also played in Game 1, and Bob Loblaw and Dial and LA Podcasting Hombre of Anaheim and Harold and dammit I'm forgetting a bunch of people. But it was a great time all around.

Chicago Joe had a great idea for future years, that we should AirBnB a house locally so we have room for the many out-of-towners.

villageidiom won the award for hanging around the longest, tolerating the most long-winded stories (bonus points for cab rides), and doing it all responsibly.

granted there is little - if any - competition for this award, but the ribbon is awarded nonetheless.

I think I was 4-0 (including, preposterously, scoring the winning run once), and am now 4-2, so I need to stand near villageidiom next year. and I vow not only to bring a glove next year, but also to be able throw overhand again. we all need goals. don't ask me to be accurate, though.

A blast yesterday fellas!!! If you'd like to keep in touch on twitter I'm @brianmets. Sorry I couldn't make it to SABR afterwards, I took a big nap. That is apparently the consequence to running around and then drinking a lot of Guinness right after.

Shout outs to everyone who came and who tolerated my unrelenting demands for a second game :)

A couple singles, 4 doubles, and a home run

I assume we're saying any BIP that results in the batter reaching base counts as a hit...

Sorry I had to bug out so early yesterday afternoon. Last night was the annual July 4th party at our summer co-op, and I was part of the committee charged with running the thing. So I dashed home, showered, drank a big glass of water (1 beer at the bar didn't really rehydrate me enough), ate a couple of crackers, and went to help out with the dinner set-up. And also to help with drinking the beer we'd bought. Oh, big perk of being on the committee was I got to stand there and steer people away from the chorizo, so I could get my share and a half of it.

A good time was had by all.

Thanks to all who showed up yesterday, it was great to see all the returnees, and it was great to meet Sean and David and Webber and Joe D and everybody else who was there. Oh, did anybody get contact info for the limey with the tats? Awesome power, just give him a little schooling in the rules (like about tagging up) and he'd be one of the best players we've got!

I suffered no injuries, nothing hurts any more than it usually does, and it rained enough here last night that I don't have to play tennis today, which would be pushing my luck on the exercise front. Now it's time to eat! Catch you all later.

Bote Man checking in safe and sound. Had a blast (in) before, during and after the game. Even though I've been trained to scream "I got it!" that doesn't mean I really got it. Ho boy. At least my red-hot bat made up for my Murphy-esque fielding.

Next year don't schedule the game concurrent with ANYTHING and we should have a full complement for both games.

I was baffled that we could only muster 8 guys (plus one lovely lady) for the post-game imbibement. We need to do better.

I'm baffled that the feminine quotient was that high. Thrilled, elated, much obliged, but still thoroughly confused.

Maybe Brian can find dates for the rest of us next year.

Great time as always...sorry me and the other catomi's couldn't join the post-game festivities. Great seeing everyone again, and meeting a few new faces. Thanks as always to everyone who helped organize.

for those curious about the gamble on the SABR-BBTF mash-up (I'm cute when I try to sound hip), I rate it a net win.

the holiday timing was not great for attracting players, and we kinda just barely managed two games (sharing pitchers and/or catchers, wincing highlights with people like me "fielding" and others with perhaps less than a 1.000 fielding pct as well).

but a lot of us got to meet a lot of new people who we only "internet knew," and SABR in general just seemed really supportive of their BBTF cousins. I can't say that I'm surprised, but I can say that we were gratified. they were pulling off a massive annual national event, and we were pulling off our non-descript softball, to be honest. yet the camaraderie was very mutual.

I want to credit Shooty for the timing idea, but if it was anyone else - it really worked even if I had to expose my non-batting limitations (wait til next year!) to the world.

:)

as for the "catomis" - you guys absolutely saved the day! this quartet included a nice young lady who was well into the top half of the skill level, btw. she hit some ropes down the LF line (although we overshifted and got away with it. I felt like a weak-fielding LF when Mark Teixeira used to be up - at least I knew, playing RF, that I can relax on this batter! updating as I realized she knew she didn't need to torment old guys. she got plenty of hits anyway.)

It was funny yesterday how clear it is that I have precisely one tool, speed, and that it's better served over more than 50 feet at a time.

Great time, everyone! Funny, I left because I wanted to get home to change for my sister's birthday boat ride... which was then cancelled because of the rain, so I coulda stayed. Booo.

we were all worried you would be way too good with that speed. WAY too fit for this game. and having one tool in a game where the median is about 0.4 still had you way ahead!

Blastin had to leave but then said, "But I'll bat one more time first!" I loved that.

Just another great guy that many of you missed on meeting (granting the day wasn't practical for most). like I've said, there's something about BBTF that lures in really interesting people.

Classic.

IIRC Karl From NY has the group photo. I trust that it will be posted somewhere soon?

Don't you mean "I fear" etc?

Deniability is always an asset!

Yeah, I'll get the pics up today.

As a couple of us noted, there were a LOT of random passersby taking pictures of us while we were playing. It was strange. One guy had a fancy camera, multiple lenses, etc. Either we were like a circus, or someone tipped off the CIA, or something.

The prior day's rain kept most of the softball fields empty, so if someone were out taking pictures of life in Central Park we were both the best option and the last resort. OK, the random dude walking through the outfield in a Spiderman suit might have been better.

Spiderman suit but no mask!

Fred Garvin is the screen name I couldn't remember. Apologies.

that would make him the first male prostitute to play BBTF softball.

maybe.

I had a great time playing and meeting everyone this weekend. It's much more likely I'll make the trek up from Philly next year.

It was pretty fun once you found out we wouldn't just make you scorekeeper, wasn't it?
   391. Hysterical & Useless Posted: July 03, 2017 at 02:57 PM (#5487248)
Thanks for the pictures Karl. I see you got two action shots (or one shot duplicated?) of me hitting the ball off the handle (bad day at the plate). Notice how the bat looks like the ball just stopped it. Then compare to Brian's swing, where the bat is just a blurry arc. Bat speed, people! Bat speed is your friend!

I've been having a wonderful time, proudly telling my friends and family of getting to play (on the same team no less!) with Sean Forman.

Of course, since they are NOT basement-dwelling baseball geeks, I first have to explain to them how and why this is significant. But once I make the Brangelina comparison, they are totally clued in!

I like Met Fan Charlie's nice little touch of posing with a cigarette dangling from his lips. Bogart would've probably been a Mets fan, too.

In full disclosure, Met Fan Charlie didn't play in game 1 and the picture was taken before game 2. The cigarette was a pre-game activity for him.

If you miss Primer softball, you’ll regret it. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life. It's also true if you play Primer softball.

I should've mentioned that one of the reasons I liked that pose was because there was a guy in my old apartment building who'd go jogging every day while puffing away. It was a sublime sight.

Could be. Make it a late afternoon or night game in the DC area and I'll be there, bad knees and all. Playing anything but pool in the early part of the day is too much like work.
   395. Howie Menckel Posted: July 03, 2017 at 04:27 PM (#5487276)
I just saw the group shot earlier and regretting I didn't offer a "full frontal" - uh, let me explain that. no sense in losing 22 pounds and bragging endlessly about it here and then not showing the goods.

yet there I am around pic 15, a 55-year-old left-handed slugger in a red t-shirt swinging for the fences (and, surprisingly, sometimes reaching the outfield with my hit).

best of all, there are no shots of me failing spectacularly in trying to throw or field!

also not one of me almost beaning myself. hit a mile high popup, trotted toward first and nearly had the ball land on my head. have never seen that one before. :)

Nice to meet you guys, I've been too sore to type until now...
My first trip to Central Park was really cool. The great lawn is amazingly well cared for, and I loved that people stopped and watched us play. Sure it was weird, and maybe they were just suffering from heat exhaustion and Field 2 just happened to be where they dropped, but still spectators!! Thanks to Edmundo for lending me his glove, I never caught anything with it.
   397. Mike Webber Posted: July 03, 2017 at 06:19 PM (#5487327)
And my friend JoeD said to me, "There was a high pop hit to you Mike, and it was hit two steps in font of you. In all that time it hung up there you never took those two steps forward." Thanks Joe.

I'm sorry I didn't get to play. I did get to meet to vi, Howie, and Chicago Joe later, unfortunately it was basically a quick introduction as I had family obligations that night.

New Yorkers have higher standards than that, thank you very much.
