Cespedes Suffers Ankle Fractures in Ranch Accident

Given the headline I was hoping to he’d slipped on some spilled salad dressing. But per Tweet from Anthony DiComo:

Cespedes suffered a “violent fall” and twisted his right ankle in a hole, per GM Brodie Van Wagenen. He was not riding a horse, the GM said, but it was a non-baseball related activity. Van Wagenen did not elaborate further, and did not offer a timeline for Cespedes’ recovery.

That’s a lot less funny than I’d hoped.

What? He violently fell into a hole? Can't wait for the details on this one. What type of ranch does he have, anyone know?

Here's a video about Cespedes' "Life on the Ranch" from 2017.

It sounds from the articles like he just stepped awkwardly in a small hole and twisted his ankle badly enough to fracture it. Not like he fell into a pit. But who knows.

So he like 100% certainly was riding a horse, right?

Technically speaking this sounds like more of a mine.
   11. Fernigal McGunnigle Posted: May 20, 2019 at 05:05 PM (#5843947)
Ms McGunnigle served on a jury for a lawsuit brought by a woman who broke her ankle after stepping in a hole (hidden by grass) in someone's yard. If was a double injury: first she rolled the ankle like in a sprain, except instead of the ligament tearing it transferred the strain along its length and fractured the bone; then a second break when the woman went down with her foot stuck in position. It was an ugly thing, apparently, and happened to someone moving at a normal speed and not doing anything unusual. (Well, except probably trespassing, which is a part of why the jury didn't cotton to the lawsuit. But she was apparently trespassing in an calm and orderly fashion.)

This happened to my sister - she was walking down the sidewalk, stepped awkwardly in a hole, and broke her ankle.

She was drunk at the time, of course. But it does happen.

If baseball year 2019 is washed out (if his ankle is now broken, it is), that is 3.1 WAR for 3 years of his contract. The year 2020 is going to have to be very special for him, to hit value delivery for that $110 million 4 year contract.

When I was in that area a couple of years ago I learned that they don't even really like calling themselves part of South Florida - they call the area the "Treasure Coast". It's a good 2-3 hours from Miami and the further north you go (I actually didn't make it all the way up to Vero Beach) you do start to see some agriculture.

EDIT: Coke to Misirlou.
   21. Nasty Nate Posted: May 20, 2019 at 06:19 PM (#5843983)
For some reason i thought Vero Beach was next to Miami. Where is the informal border of "South Florida," the big lake?

That's ok, I am sure the Met's medical staff will have him back into top shape in no time....

Some people are a bit more fragile then others. I've got 4 sons who all played soccer at pretty high levels. My number 3, good player, but every time he went down hard, he broke(tore, fractured, etc) something. The rest, nothing. They could get pummelled and not one sprain, break, tear, etc. amongst the other 3, just weird.

I once got 9 stitches in my foot from absentmindedly kicking an empty Budweiser can in some tall grass in a field - tall enough, and it was dark enough out, that I couldn't see the broken windshield that lie beneath.

interesting experience to be wearing a white sock - only for it to turn into a red sock as soon as I removed the sneaker.

just call it "a reverse Carlton Fisk"

I defer to locals, but I think it's around Juno/Jupiter. I'm not sure whether those towns consider themselves part of South Florida (they probably do). Anything south of that definitely is.

Yes. And it's not just an arbitrary thing. The topography north and south of the lake is dramatically different, and because of that, the land use. South of the lake, whatever isn't swampland is sugar cane. North of the lake, to Orlando, whatever isn't hardwood forest, is citrus and cattle ranches.

that's correct, and Jupiter's lattitude is about the halfway point of the lake, so it fits topographically as well as culturally.

I stepped on a brick someone left on a path and screwed up my foot badly. Dr sent me to physical therapy. Therapist is walking me through a series of questions and she asks “do you fall often ?”

It was quite sobering to realize I was old enough for someone to ask me that question. Ruined my day

close buddy of mine lives in Jupiter (as do at least 50 PGA Tour pros).

it's South Florida, he'd say. he started selling real estate there are around 20 years ago. kind on northern sprawl territory of invaders from the South.

I think there was a goal of annexing all the way up to Stuart, but I think the troops got too widely dispersed so they settled for conquering and permanently settling Jupiter so Robert Kraft would have a safe place to, er, get his ego massaged.

You're Brandon Morrow's dad?

My dad stepped in a grass hole a few years ago while we were walking through Graceland Cemetery here in Chicago. Yes, I realize this sounds like a setup to a joke, but the reality is that it wasn't all that funny because he wrenched his back really good. Hurt for a year or so, and I think he still feels it from time to time. Ankles were fine, though.

Point is, gotta watch where you step, whether drunk or sober, or professional athlete or out-of-shape man in your mid-sixties.

If that is true (cannot tell if it is tongue in cheek and, if so, ignore the rest), then Brodie has to recuse himself from all issues related to this matter, right?

That's great / fascinating. I thought I read somewhere that the contract was insured. I don't know how these policies work but if that's the case, I assume the insurance company will investigate whether Cespedes violated the terms of his contract, even if the Mets aren't inclined to do so.

I remember being excited the be the first person to shoot on a new basketball goal at work and driving to the basket ... only to step in a narrow three foot deep hole parallel to the basket (I presume the initial place they were planning on putting it). Despite being in my 30s and having cartilage made of wet felt, no injury.

Palm Beach County and south constitutes South Florida for all practical purposes.

I'd bet real money that Cespedes lost his balance swatting away a swarm of love bugs which were out in force this past weekend in Central Florida. I spent a good 20 minutes scrubbing them off the front of my white car, which was essentially black with them on the front bumper.

Supposedly they only come out twice a year, Memorial Day-ish and Labor Day-ish. The bartender at the poolside bar near Tampa told me they've been out for a few WEEKS, but were tailing off this weekend. I hope so, as they have zero guidance and just drift with the breeze everywhere, including into your drink cup, your eyes, the pool, everywhere.

I drove to Gainesville 3 weeks ago to pick up my son for the summer, and both ways on the turnpike between Yeehaw Junction and Orlando, they were thick as thieves. Fortunately on the way home at ~ Doral, we drove through the mother of all thunderstorms, and my car was almost completely cleaned off.

Given his small sample size great start to the season, what do the Mets do with Dom Smith now? If he's still part-time hitting this well, is he a valuable trade chip at the deadline?
   47. formerly dp Posted: May 22, 2019 at 09:00 AM (#5844534)
I dunno, I suspect he isn't.

Cespedes was always going to be a wildcard this year, but a comeback at the break was looking decently likely. That would've locked Nimmo into CF, blocked McNeil out of LF, and with Frazier & Lowrie for 3b, left McNeil without a clear everyday job, while also making it tougher to get Davis in the lineup.

So problem solved, I guess? My big hope is that the Mets can just void his contract, wipe their hands of the guy for good, and reinvest his salary elsewhere for 2020. But it's the Mets, so...

If you heard that the Mets had traded for Will Craig, how much would you be OK with them giving up for him?

However much it is, that's about how much trade value Dom Smith has.
