‘ChadBradfordWannabe’ leaves Diamondbacks for Angels

Carlos Gomez and the Gleeman shout-out—not a band name (yet).

This news is admittedly probably only interesting to longtime Baseball Think Factory visitors, but since I’m included in that group here’s a post about it.

Ben Badler of Baseball America reports that Diamondbacks international scouting director Carlos Gomez has been hired away by the Angels to fill the same role. Prior to becoming Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto worked with Gomez in Arizona’s front office.

Anybody have an opinion on how he did with the DBacks? I don't know if he was in the role long enough for any of "his" guys to make it to the majors.

While here he displayed a deep knowledge of pitching mechanics and seemed on the button in his assessments of (mostly ML) pitchers. It was easy to see how he would be employed as a (pitching) scout or roving minor-league instructor and maybe eventual ML pitching coach. But whether he knew anything about scouting hitters or managing people never really came up (for obvious reasons). CBW as future GM never would have occurred to me in those days. So just curious how he's done in that role.

Obviously well enough to get hired away but then again Allard Baird is still working somewhere. :-)

BA blog entry on Carlos's move. It includes a list of international players the D'backs have signed.

That's a pretty good haul of pitching prospects, although obviously all are very young and a long way away from the majors.

Good for him. I assume it's a pay raise.

With the international signing cap, it's more important than ever to have good scouting abroad - I assume this means the Angels believe he's a good scout/administrator of scouts.

At the time of the DiPoto hire, there were suggestions that he might bring Gomez with him when he could; this was not a surprise.

I wrote an article about Carlos for the Purdue alumni magazine, and I spoke to DiPoto about him. Jerry raved about Carlos (and Carlos had nothing but great things to say about Jerry). I figured he might eventually land out there.

I exchanged a grand total of three emails with Carlos in 2007, so like all primates, I'm in favor of this hiring. I think I may have even emailed him after he got the Arizona job asking if he needed a valet or assistant.

Congrats Carlos.

Diamondbacks have a good collection of young arms right now. That certainly speaks well of Carlos. Angels now have two guys from the organization that traded Dan Haren for Pat Corbin and Tyler Skaggs. Remember how that trade was spinned as "trading for Joe Saunders because they overrate pitcher wins"?

As an aside, for a rookie who won 16 games, 125 ERA+, and near a 4-1 K-W ratio, Wade Miley sure has escaped attention.

I remember an email disagreement I had with Carlos over Josh Vitters's swing mechanics. It appears he was right (surprise).

The circumstances suggest he's making a move to where he wants to be so I offer him a hearty congratulations.
