so this is going well

Clear your schedule for next week, man. You know what I mean.

I wrote this to some Nats friends inspired by someone who said something about it earlier today (maybe above, maybe another thread):

Here is what was going on in the world 86 years, give or take a few months, before the last Washington appearance in the world series:

Brigham Young arrived in what became Salt Lake City.
Jesse James was born.
The North Carolina General Assembly incorporated the town of Goldsboro.
Jane Eyre was published.
The last of Dickens' Christmas novellas was published.
Pasteur discovered chirality.
Wuthering Heights was published.
Gold was discovered in California.
Construction of the Washington Monument began.
Wisconsin is admitted as the 30th United State.
Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo signed.
The Communist Manifesto was published.

Oh boy, Nats just piling on now

Well, this game may put a dagger in the heart of the possibility of another WS with 2 teams who have never been there before. The last one was in 1906.

Clear your schedule for next week, man. You know what I mean.

I've had a conference call or event in the middle of every game we've won except the wild card game. If this game goes like it looks like it's doing, I guess I'll schedules ome more calls
   506. salvomania Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:02 PM (#5890549)
Good NFL game on tonight...

I see that the Packers have a receiver whose dad was a couple years behind me at Oak Park-River Forest High School... and whose grandfather is (was) Tony "The Big Tuna" Accardo.
   507. bunyon Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:02 PM (#5890550)
Well, this game may put a dagger in the heart of the possibility of another WS with 2 teams who have never been there before. The last one was in 1906.

There will be more teams someday.

And they'll make the Series before Seattle.
   508. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:05 PM (#5890551)
Now most teams would consider resting the starter up 7-0. But I assume the Nats have only like 6 guys they trust with the ball and 4 of them are starters....
   509. salvomania Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:06 PM (#5890552)
I'm now rooting for the Cardinals to finish this series with a batting average above .100...

With Jose Martinez batting they're now 8-for-79...

He's about the only one taking competitive AB's this series...

EDIT: A hit! Martinez is now 4-for-5 this series, rest of team is 5-for-75.

Martinez has seen 23 pitches in his 3 ab vs. Stras tonight.
   510. bunyon Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:07 PM (#5890553)
Hugh, they'll rest their starters while the Astros and Yankees keep playing.
   511. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:09 PM (#5890554)
they'll rest their starters while the Astros and Yankees keep playing.

Makes sense. Though I'm really hoping the Astros take them in 5 games.....
   512. bunyon Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:10 PM (#5890555)
Me too. But I'm not optimistic.

When it rains, it pours!

Now most teams would consider resting the starter up 7-0. But I assume the Nats have only like 6 guys they trust with the ball and 4 of them are starters....

They also have Roenis Elías who is being stored in a case that reads "Break glass only in case of emergency".
   515. bunyon Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:11 PM (#5890558)
I'd like the Cards to not get another hit until 2020.
   516. bunyon Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:12 PM (#5890559)
Who has home field in the World Series this year?
   517. salvomania Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:14 PM (#5890561)
I imagine one of the 100+-win AL teams..
   518. Bourbon Samurai stays in the fight Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:15 PM (#5890562)
It is time to pull Strasburg now
   519. bunyon Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:15 PM (#5890563)
Is it best record now? I can't keep up with how they decide it.

EDIT: I googled and salvo is correct. I didn't realize they'd changed that after 2016.

Nats looking Cardinalian in the field.
   520. salvomania Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:17 PM (#5890564)
Is it best record now?

Every third year it's best record, the next year it's All-Star Game winner, and the next year it alternates.
   521. bunyon Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:18 PM (#5890565)
Hope Soto is ok.
   522. salvomania Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:19 PM (#5890566)
Surprised our No. 2 PH off the bench (OPS+ of 80) struck out.
   523. salvomania Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:19 PM (#5890567)
Dex looking for that first hit!
   524. bunyon Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:20 PM (#5890568)
I'm surprised Strasburg is out there.
   525. Bourbon Samurai stays in the fight Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:20 PM (#5890569)
Ok maybe leaving him in was fine
   526. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:21 PM (#5890570)
Wow. Strasburg with 117 pitches. I wonder if Boras signed a permission slip for up to 120.
   527. bunyon Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:21 PM (#5890571)
Ha! I forgot I paused it to take the garbage out. I was a little behind.
   528. bunyon Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:23 PM (#5890572)
So the only Cards runs are on Nats misplays; right?
   529. Esoteric Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:23 PM (#5890573)
Just an amazing performance by Strasburg. Like Scherzer, he emptied the tank.
   530. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:31 PM (#5890574)
Kendrick would appear to be dialed in.
   531. bunyon Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:34 PM (#5890575)
I feel comfortable saying that, had the Braves won Game 5, they'd be getting shellacked, too. The Nats are just on.
   532. salvomania Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:34 PM (#5890576)
What is that, all 8 runs for the Nats with 2 outs? Or was the Robles homer with less than two?
   533. The Yankee Clapper Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:34 PM (#5890577)
Alden Gonzalez, ESPN Staff Writer

Stephen Strasburg's postseason ERA of 1.10 trails only Sandy Koufax (0.95) among those with a minimum of five starts. He has accumulated 57 strikeouts and 5 walks in 41 innings.
   534. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:34 PM (#5890578)
Howie Kendrick continues to have good games.
   535. Bote Man Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:35 PM (#5890579)
Noah Frank @NoahFrankWTOP
Howie Kendrick has twice as many extra-base hits this series (4) as the Cardinals (2).

#VeteranPresence
   536. bunyon Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:36 PM (#5890580)
Not to keep beating a dead horse, but one of the Cards' extra-base hits was an error (not an official error, a real error).
   537. Bote Man Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:44 PM (#5890581)
Goldschmidt returns to the dugout, announces his retirement.
   538. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:45 PM (#5890582)
How awesome are the Nats right now?

Well I'll tell ya....even Fernando Rodney looks good. That's how awesome they are right now!
   539. Bote Man Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:51 PM (#5890584)
Nats radio saying Howie Kendrick's 3 XBH either tie or make a record for a post-season game.

Must be Ponce de Leon's fountain of youth???

Nats radio saying Howie Kendrick's 3 XBH either tie or make a record for a post-season game.

Well, I know there have been several 3-homer games; I'm surprised no one's ever gotten 4 xbh
   541. The Yankee Clapper Posted: October 14, 2019 at 10:57 PM (#5890586)
Tanner Rainey coming in for the 9th. Very good against right-handed hitters (.526 OPS), although left-handlers are a problem (.942 OPS).

Can the Cardinals just make it easier on themselves and forfeit tomorrow???
   544. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 14, 2019 at 11:09 PM (#5890589)
Kendrick has absolutely mastered the content-free Crash Davis postgame interview too. The guy is on fire.
   545. Bote Man Posted: October 14, 2019 at 11:21 PM (#5890591)
harpergordek @harpergordek
Put it another way: Wong, Fowler, Carpenter and Edman are 0-37. Molina and Goldschmidt are 2-21. That's 2-58! A cool .034 batting average. Corbin was the worst hitting pitcher for the Nats and he hit .092

FYI, Mr. Gordek is a Yankees fan and only blogs about the Nationals so that he can be a dispassionate, soulless automaton.
   546. Astroenteritis Posted: October 14, 2019 at 11:27 PM (#5890592)
Yikes, the Cardinals offense of late has been even worse than that of the Astros. I like the Cardinals, but it would be cool to see Washington in the WS.
   547. Dr. Vaux Posted: October 15, 2019 at 12:13 AM (#5890595)
Well, this game may put a dagger in the heart of the possibility of another WS with 2 teams who have never been there before. The last one was in 1906.

I don't think there's ever been a World Series, which was possible before today (technically still is), between teams that had previously met in a playoff series. The Astros and Dodgers might count, although their 1980 playoff was part of the regular season. The Brewers and Cardinals did do the opposite a couple of years ago, when they met in a playoff series after having previously met in the World Series.
   548. Roger Cedeno's Spleen Posted: October 15, 2019 at 12:40 AM (#5890600)

The Astros and Dodgers also played in the 1981 NLDS (Division Series existed as a one-off that year because of the strike).

Montreal Expos 1994 season: 74-40 (0.649) "They're going to the World Series!!11!!1"

Washington Nationals 2019 season ended (after 19-31 start): 74-38 (0.661)

HMMM...

Houston Astros hitting stats, post-season 2019 to date:
.AVG .OBP .SLG
.207 .264 .331

Can they win with this anemic offense? It looks grim, but:

Houston Astros hitting stats, 2017 ALCS win over the Yankees:

No Stanton in the lineup, replaced by Hicks who hasn't seen game action in weeks. Not ideal. But against Cole, it probably won't matter who they put against him.
   553. The Yankee Clapper Posted: October 15, 2019 at 01:51 PM (#5890717)
Not that promising:
Matt Marrone, ESPN.com

Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters before today's Game 3 of the ALCS that, if this were the regular season, Giancarlo Stanton's right quad strain would warrant an IL stint. Stanton is out of today's lineup, but, Boone says, he will again be available off the bench and remains day to day.
Sounds like DH duty, at best, for the remainder of the postseason.

Ugh. We'll have plenty of time to be defeatist once they are actually, you know, defeated. Right now, I think they're going to touch him up. 6 IP, 4 ER.
   555. The Yankee Clapper Posted: October 15, 2019 at 03:02 PM (#5890734)
Marly Rivera, ESPN Writer

Several players told me that they've been told they will likely not play tomorrow due to weather. No decision has been made yet. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said: "We're watching the forecast. We're mindful of two things, We don't want to affect the competitive complexion of the series, and we wanna be mindful of our fans. We don't want to bring them here and we know we're not going to be able to play. Just too early to tell."
MLB may call it early if Wednesday’s forecast holds. That could mean <gasp> a day with no baseball.
   556. bunyon Posted: October 15, 2019 at 03:15 PM (#5890737)
I don't see how the Yankees can expect to compete without Stanton.

I did sample some of the local kumquat wine (and champagne!) that I bought from a guy by the side of the road*, and trust me, if that didn't get me there, I'm not sure what would have.

*Yes, this is actually 100% true...I make poor decisions from time to time. When in Rome and whatnot. It tasted exactly as you'd expect. I did get sick, but not until we got back to Mexico City a couple days later, so it probably(?) wasn't what got me.

Is pitch count really a big deal? For some guys it is but from the Yankee perspective who cares? I can't imagine the Yankees were expecting much more than 4-5 innings out of Severino so the 36 pitches is a bunch but realistically it doesn't change the way the Yanks are going to approach this.

6-pitch inning for Severino in 3rd. Cole has been a little off, but has escaped a couple of jams. Let’s see if running him right back out has any effect.

The Nationals draw first blood in the first inning with the first batter. Trea 1B, the gritty Adam Eaton 2B, Nene No-Bags SF+RBI.

STL 0 B1

Patrick Corbin was ON FAHR in the T1. This could be 4 consecutive dominant pitching performances to carry the Nats to the W.S.
